What do you think the saddest song in the world is?

(I don't mean sad as in pathetic
I mean sad as in meaningful and brings a tear to your eye.)

Yopu can post the lyrics if you want.

I went through this whole forum and downloaded most of the songs! I think the saddest song so far is Fields of Gold....But I think My Heart Will Go On is really sad...I cried through half that movie! The song itself isn't sad...but just think of the people who died...and you'll need a box of tissues!

"Hello" by Evanescence is the #1 song that makes me cry everytime I hear it. Amy Lee's haunting and lingering voice just stays with you far after the song ends. Her vocals along with the piano and cello just....It's indescribable. Just read these words. It's like a poem. Without a chorus, just little verses. So beautiful...

playground school bell rings again
rain clouds come to play again
has no one told you she's not breathing?
hello i'm your mind giving you someone to talk to
hello

if i smile and don't believe
soon i know i'll wake from this dream
don't try to fix me i'm not broken
hello i'm the lie living for you so you can hide
don't cry

suddenly i know i'm not sleeping
hello i'm still here
all that's left of yesterday

Another song that's just really sad and truly touching is "Tearjerker" by Red Hot Chili Peppers. Anthony wrote this for Kurt Cobain when he found out he died. They were, apparently, good friends. And well, the song certainly lives up to its name...

My mouth fell open
Hoping that the truth
Would not be true
Refuse the news

I'm feeling sick now
What the f**k am I
Supposed to do
Just loose and loose

First time I saw you
You were sitting
Backstage in a dress
A perfect mess

You never knew this
But I wanted badly for you to
Requite my love

Chorus :
Left on the floor
Leaving your body
When highs are the lows
And lows are the way
So hard to stay
Guess now you know
I love you so

I liked your whiskers
And I liked the
Dimple in your chin
Your pale blue eyes

You painted pictures
Cause the one
Who hurts
Can give so much
You gave me such

Repeat chorus

I Believe...Diamond Rio

I was listening to it once...and all at once my bro Ryan come flooding back to me...and it really felt good to be able to cry for once. I don't that often, but it feels so good to let go of tension that way. Anyway, it's such a sad song, and it made me miss him so much!

Life's a Dance by John Michael Montgomery made me cry once, too...just cuz I could so clearly remember Ryan singing that.

saddest song ever :

Sophia - so slow

lyrics :

I turn of the light but leave the television talking
no, tonight I don't want to be alone
I try to close my eyes, but I'm afraid of the dark
I see you everywhere
I see you everywhere

but death comes so slow
when you're waiting
when you're waiting to be taken
and death comes so slow
when it's all you want
and it takes the ones that don't
and death comes so slow

I try to close my eyes, but I'm afraid of the dark
I see you everywhere
I see you everywhere

really sad too :

Counting Crows - A long December

A long December, and there's reason to believe
Maybe this year will be better than the last
I can't remember the last thing that you said as you were leavin'
Now the days go by so fast

And it's one more day up in the canyon
And it's one more night in Hollywood
If you think that I can be forgiven....I wish you would

The smell of hospitals in winter
And the feeling that its all a lot of oysters, but no pearls
All at once you look across a crowded room
To see the way that light attaches to a girl

And it's one more day up in the canyon
And it's one more night in Hollywood
If you think you might come to California...I think you should

Drove up to Hillside Manor sometime after two a.m.
And talked a little while about the year
I guess the winter makes you laugh a little slower,
Makes you talk a little lower about the things you could not show her

And its been a long December, and there's reason to believe
Maybe this year will be better than the last
I can't remember all the times I tried to tell myself
To hold on to these moments as they pass

And it's one more day up in the canyon
And it's one more night in Hollywood
It's been so long since I've seen the ocean..I guess I should.

I agree with a few people....i think 'hello' by evanescence, and also 'my immortal' by evanescence. its a lovely song, and the use of just piano and strings is fab.
I also think that savage agrden's 'two beds and a coffee machine' is sad...about a woman being beat up by her partner

I think "The Dance" by Garth Brooks has got to be my saddest song..

Looking back on the memory of
The dance we shared, beneath the stars above.
For a moment, all the world was right,
How could I have known that you'd ever say goodbye?

And now, I'm glad I didn't know,
The way It all would end,
The way It all would go,
Our lives are better left to chance,
I could have missed the pain,
But I'd of had to miss the dance.

Holding you, I held everything,
For a moment wasn't I the king?
But If I'd only known how the king would fall,
Hey who's to say, you know I might have changed It all,

And now, I'm glad I didn't know,
The way It all would end,
The way It all would go,
Our lives are better left to chance,
I could have missed the pain,
But I'da had to miss the dance.

It's my life, It's better left to chance,
I could have missed the pain,
But I'da had to miss
The dance

if you just watch the video.. and I guess if you associate it with the things I do.. I want to cry everytime it's sung.. but I don't.. because I don't cry.

and "It was your song" because.. well.. the story fits me and a guy.

Standing in the spotlight
On such a perfect night
Knowing that you're out there listening

I remember one time
When I was so afraid
And didn't think I had the courage
To stand upon this stage

Then you reached into my heart
And you found the melody
And if there ever was somebody
Who made me believe in me
It was you... it was you...

(Chorus) It was your song that made me sing
And it was your voice that gave me wings
And it was your light that shined guiding my heart to find
This place where I belong
It was your song

Every night I pray before the music starts to play
That I'll do my best and I won't let you down
And for all the times I've stood here
This feeling feels brand new
And anytime I doubt myself I think of you...

Chorus

Dreams can come true
With God's great angels like you...

Chorus

It was your song
It's always been your... song

Ok, when people say 'Fields Of Gold' is the saddest song...

Do they mean Sting's version, or Eva Cassidy's?

I personally think Eva Cassidy - her version was used on a cancer advert over here in the UK and I was SO close to crying...

There's this song by Bette Midler called 'He Was Too Good To Me/Since You Stayed Here'.. it always gets me:

He was too good to me.
How will I get along now?
So close he stood to me.
Everything seems all wrong now.
He would have brought me the sun.
Making me smile, that was his fun.

When I was mean to him
he'd never say, "Go away, now."
I was a queen to him.
Who's gonna light my way now?
It's only natural that I'm blue.
He was too good to be true.

You'd never recognize the room.
The pictures all have different frames now.
And all the chairs are rearranged now.
Somehow, I've thrown out every souvenir.
Yes, there've been changes made
since you stayed here.

You'd never recognize the street.
The neighbor's kids play different games now.
The colors in the trees have changed now.
Strange how I've hardly thought of you this year.
Yes, there've been changes made since you stayed here.

The same address, the more or less.
More happens, less matters, I guess.

You'd never recognize my life.
The party-givers know my name now.
And when I cry it's not the same now.
Somehow, I never waste a single tear.
Yes, there've been changes made
since you stayed here.

You'd never recognize the room.
You'd never recognize . . .

"Here Without You" by 3 Doors Down is absolutely amazing...not only is it a beautiful song, but a total tearjerker too! if you've just had your little heart crumpled and crushed and can't seem to get over it, this song is perfect...it's so emotional!
