been wanting to mention a few thoughts about the review functions, so thought I'd share them here. and maybe some of you have other ideas, feel free mention..

~ unless there's some meaningful reason for other code development plans, remove the 'incomplete lyrics' and 'unreadable lyrics' reasons for denying song change requests. these choices actually go against the LSI moderator how-to's, which say partial lyrics or those with some typos etc are better than NO lyrics and should be approved, we can always clean up the song later.. plus we have a comment box to state these reasons if someone feels strongly enough. i dont think I've ever selected either of those 2 choices and can't see any value in them being there, in fact i look at them as bad reasons to deny approval to a contribution yet people might feel like they SHOULD choose them just because they ARE present.

~ would be nice to add SKIP or UNDETERMINED to the voting choices. you can't get past an item in review without providing a binary yes/no answer. this is difficult sometimes, and leads to us being forced to 'go with the flow' of majority of votes, or just picking an arbitrary response. it's especially problematic if the submission is not in a language you can read... which brings me to

~ allow that new language translation feature to work in the review screens. OR IDEALLY.. all reviews would be automatically translated to English as we're reviewing, but 1, i know not ALL languages are available in the translation feature and 2, those who are fluent will probably want to see the actual content as originally submitted. plus I'm sure not everything translates perfectly as intended especially for song lyrics with poetic meaning or non-word words (ex: woahhhh, lalala) so at least having the 'language' drop down within the review screen as a choice to view as (selected language) would give us better tools to make decisions. at least we might be able to confirm the content submitted isn't like, a bad joke or advertisement to porn sites lol

~ just because i think it would save SO MUCH time for everyone.. go back to the old method of allowing the assigned artist moderator vote be the one that actually approves (or denies) the submitted changes, push it live to the site/remove it from the review queue.

the reason behind this last request is, there's times where I'll find one of my artists songs has a pending contribution in the queue, and there might be other edits still needed to the song which weren't included in the ladt user request, but I can't do anything until it finally makes it's way through the public review, which is usually by tomorrow and by then I've moved on. i just feel like, if I'm that artist's assigned moderator and I'm already here trying to clean up their index, but getting slowed down waiting on OTHERES to decide if this one change should be made or not in the public review, kind of defeats any point to actually signing up as an artist moderator.

just my 7 cents..

Yes!
Yes!
Yes!
Yes!

and for me....

Definitely YES----as I get "hung up" on one song review.....and cannot go on especially when lately it says 99+ songs up for review....

Especially---when the song is in a foreign language.....and I just won't commit myself if I don't understand the words in the original language---you have to be a fluent speaker in whatever language many times to get the native nuances or slang or reasons for word usage that most "auto" translators simply do not give you by just "translating" the words....

So since I only speak English...it would be nice to have a button
that says
"Sorry, I don't understand that language"----and its not counted as a "vote"
but lets me answer the review and proceed on to the next song, one I can check and confirm myself because I understand ENGLISH only!

[I know pieces of up to 20 other languages, but don't get me to order at a foreign restaurant...I'll end up with a giant squid looking at me with its one eye on the plate surrounded by sea sponges!!]

My two cents extra (repeated from elsewhere)....[--another complaint sorry : Why can't I find things using the two "comments" and "trending topics" that I wrote earlier?....oh well...rewriting it for this thread: ]

I was disappointed that Ray has removed the "credits" for each of the review posts.
It used to say something [I can't access the review at the correct spot as I write this]
like:
"MCSMeister has requested a song be removed and added to the song map of this artist"
etc etc

Now it just says: "Request for song removal" or
more specifically:

This is request to remove the song Three Times in Love by Tommy James, because it is duplicate and should be merged with this correct version:.....etc"

No where does it mention that MCSMeister was the one responsible for doing the "heavy lifting" of finding the error, researching it, and of course filling out the request form!

[As I read this over again I wrote something above in my post that I'm referring to here.....]

Why does the notification of review items stop at 99+??
I have a computer game that did that.....they recently "fixed" the notification...to be able to go OVER 100 without using any extra space!!!

HOW? [For Ray to use this idea too]
When the counter is to display 112 items it would say: 1_2 and you knew it meant 1 hundred and 12, by knocking out the middle digit with a tiny tiny dash, it retains the same design space that the game people wanted to preserve in their layout design! Allows for 100's to be counted for review process when necessary! Easy fix I think!

practice.. you crack me up!

but yes i also noticed the missing credits you refer to, but doesn't seem to be ALWAYS missing..? i think it still shows for merge or delete requests? but also, i always believed the 1st vote you see in the voting list is the requesting person... i could be wrong,..?

Thank you music_junkie.... My spreading humor job for today is DONE! Accomplished!

i always believed the 1st vote you see in the voting list is the requesting person.

Correct! 2 for 2 I see! I'm using that knowledge to properly thank them for their hard work and effort on behalf of LetsSingIt site!

And

Ray! I guess your link here is only for "mods" or "Artist moderators" as I do not have permission to enter that part of LSI!

Oops, you don't have the privileges to access this page.

Point one:
I use that frequently as people only transcribe one word or one sentence and the song has much more lyrics. Or they will troll and put "instrumental" when it's a song that has lyrics. As for unreadable I rarely use that one.

Point two:
That is bad as it will keep items in the queue. I could see people just skipping around.

Point three:
Lyrics should be in the language they're recorded. I don't think it is worth having it in English. You can listen to the song and use Google translate to see, roughly what it is. If it's spam they usually just put a link so you can tell it doesn't go there.

Point four:
I like how it is now. When we had the artist mods being the God vote, some did not vote which held the item in the queue for two additional weeks and some would always vote no to any changes. The way it is, it makes sure items get reviewed right away.

What I would like - since I'm like apostle level (one step below God level) - to see is:

- if I see an error, ie they put the tracklist numbers or put the lyrics in the comment section, I can edit it to correct it instead of having to vote no.

I agree, people sometimes dont do a good job in "adding" lyrics. if its obvious NO (spam/bio/url/html code etc) anything clearly NOT lyrics, i think a simple NO vote is all that's needed (why do we need 4-5 reasons why we're voting NO when theres a comments box to explain yourself?).

I suggest eliminating these extraneous NOs bc for the majority of times I've seen folks use the incomplete lyrics choice, there often ARE a bunch of lyrics submitted in the request but maybe the line wrap didn't work for us to see them all, or maybe they forgot a verse or chorus (ex: you know when you do a search and like google brings up a partial reveal of the lyrics but you have to expand the view to the whole song.. i think some people dont catch that and just copy what they see). but i still feel like even partial lyrics is better than NO lyrics, and that rule is included in LSI's moderator rules guide so unless RAY has a particular need to see all these extra reasons to vote no, i think they are clutter in the voting section.

RE: 'trolls using instrumental when it isn't'..

i WOULD be in favor of a vote that says "Song is NOT instrumental" or "Song has lyrics"

Point two: add a SKIP or UNDETERMINED vote
..bad as it will keep items in the queue. I could see people just skipping around.

well yes, people would skip around the queue, but where is the value in forcing someone to make an impossible choice? i cant read Chinese or Turkish or Russian or Nordic languages.. i know, im a lowly american with 4 yrs french in high school that i long forgot LOL. if someone else wants to spend half an hour researching and translating, great.. myself, im not comfortable researching anything that isn't even using good ol' american ABCs bc lordy knows what viral paradise i might stumble into!! but i dont think we should be forced to make a decision this way. then again, maybe if i had a simple translator tool on the PR screen i wouldn't also want a SKIP button..??

Point three: use the translator tool in public review
Lyrics should be in the language they're recorded. I don't think it is worth having it in English.

I AGREE the lyrics sb PUBLISHED in the languages they're written but as i said, i only speak/read English.. so i didnt mean to switch the lyrics entirely to English only in LSI, i meant for the purpose of reviewing, let me review them in English using the translator tool.. lets put Rays new toy to use in another area of LSI for the same reasons he added it in the first place..

Point four: let MY vote on MY moderated artists be the "GOD VOTE"
When we had the artist mods being the God vote, some did not vote which held the item in the queue for two additional weeks

I understand/agree (& am prob guilty of not being available fast enough to vote on my artists lol).. but i just meant WITHIN THE PUBLIC REVIEW. EDIT - IF I GET THERE TO VOTE WHILE ITS STILL IN THE PRQ and it's MY artist, make MY vote the god vote.. otherwise why bother having assigned artist mods?? but that way if i dont show up to vote, its still in the PR queue and it'll get handled theres often times ill get notifications of changes to my artists and ill find that it went to the PRQ and i didnt even know a change request was made until after its been reviewed & pushed out live. then i have to go see what changes were made and many times i have to correct whatever was pushed out. or ill see my artists in the PRQ and i have to vote just like everyone else does.

What I would like... is: - if I see an error, ie they put the tracklist numbers.. etc.. I can edit it to correct it instead of having to vote no.

1000% AGREE!!

i always wonder if the original person who submitted the request bothers to read our feedback and goes back to make the corrections. if its a GUEST i'm betting the answer must be no, bc do they even get LSI email?? and then what happens to the changes we all voted or corrections we say are needed, is it lost forever??

sooo many times i wish we could EDIT the submission for exactly that type of example!! but from a code perspective, idk how Ray could make that work. bc if you made a change to what was originally submitted, when you save, does that mean it should immediately be the god vote that passes it through to the live site and drops it from the PRqueue, or should it be left in PRQ for others, who might also make changes, then which version sb approved, or should we see all the versions the voters edited??

i can see where this idea will get very complicated esp if each voter edit needs to somehow be saved/retained.. so for code sake, i don't see this idea being feasible -which is why i didnt suggest it - but i am on board with you, if it COULD be done, let's make it happen

May I jump ahead and suggest to Ray, to solve the problem of people "skipping around" [the term is "cherry picking"] selecting only the ones they want to do and leave all the harder ones for everyone else to work on.

My small suggestion is set a daily /24 hr "limit" on that skip a vote option.
Just like other things here refresh after 24 hours, each of us gets to "skip" one item, once a day....then we have to do the rest...
[Suggestion: start with just one, Ray can easily up the number once the coding for the process is in place, depending upon if people [like me], like and use the option, which he can monitor its use so its not like everyone abandons all the reviews!

This way It does force us to do some of the harder ones, but then again, whoever is posting these that understands the language or song that well when everyone else does not......we need them to make each song understandable or the reasons why to change it clear in ENGLISH for everyone to follow:

Excellent point!

I seem to recall having a problem with my "sign in" several months/year ago.....and so I discovered as a "guest" I was forbidden to do the "Review" button...says "log in first"

I always write something (even if some members complain I write too much) in my review other than "OK" as whoever started and posted the review did a lot of effort and work to get that song into the review list so I thank them for doing that at least ! I hope they read it after all the votes get counted....as there is no way for us to go back into the review and see what the "score" was at the end.....how many voted for or against a particular review request!
Probably too difficult to allow that to happen, just pointing this out....

practice you always make me smile. and yes i have noticed and DO APPRECIATE all the thank yous you dole out in voting forms, there's certainly not enough niceties in the world today right??? but i appreciate your appreciation!!

your idea about a time limit on a SKIP feature...
i mean maybe that's a compromise?? (and of course this is all pie in the sky theory talk anyway, wont happen unless god - spelled R-A-Y - says it will.. LOL) and i do realize ALL submitted items MUST get reviewed somehow. but like i said before,, i'd feel less inclined to skip anything IF I CAN READ IT. if its in another language (or alphabet!), so i know a few of the regular mods here are multi-lingual, i usually defer to their votes (hoping and assuming they know the right answer!). but there's a few mods who vote NO (seems like ALOT) just because, just to be the odd-vote out to make Ray say HUH?? before making a final decision ... so sometimes i just logout of voting and wait for the PRQ to clear, esp if i see several in a row in foreign language... it's irritating to me, i'd like to at least 'cherry pick' to get the ones done the quickest that i feel good about reviewing (and ray prefers things done as FAST as possible!!) . people can call it lazy but i call it proactive virus protection on my part!! and as we all do this on a VOLUNTARY BASIS i'd think ANY help we give is better than 0...

back to the GUEST submissions for a moment though...

i think i said, ive been a mod on this site for like a decade now. i cant remember the beginning times/features, but for sure i dont know the CURRENT function of 'guests'. i didnt think you are required to login to submit changes, add lyrics etc?? but if they DO have a login & didnt even bother to take time to setup a REAL profile (hence their name still says GUEST) then i doubt seriously that most of them are logging back in to see our LSI voting feedback, or if they bother to follow up even if they do login??

from a code perspective i think there's an easy fix. have you noticed, there's a checkbox at the bottom of the edit submission form saying 'notify me'. (and btw these GUESTS or any member could simply uncheck that box too and never see the feedback). but that checkbox gives ray a way to fwd the final voting results of that item to the submitter (or not).. he can just as easily CC that info in LSI email TO ANYONE WHO VOTED, or put the same checkbox on the PRQ voting screen so we can request a copy of the vote results, then SOMEONE can take ownership to follow up..?? its either that or become an uber geek with a notebook full of songs to go recheck ( -- and yes i have done this on a few occasions too!! LOL) i just think there should be an easier way with the existing features/code in LSI to notify us??

one more thing. you mentioned theres no way to go back and see what you/others voted or what was submitted for review on a specific item from the PRQ. i noticed this today, i'd submitted an item i requested to delete in an unmodded artist, plus i already had one of my mod. artist songs pending in the queue, so when i went into the PRQ again, which at the time said i'd 100% reviews done, that little summary box came up, reviews=0, my artist=1, my contributions=1. each of the summary details were LINKS, but when i clicked they dont open anything. i'm wondering if they ever did, or ever were meant to reopen to (re-)review the contribution.. even if you're in an artists index of songs and see that yellow pending contribution box, i think clicking on it should show you the PRQ again, even if you already voted on it. maybe you wouldnt have the ability to vote again in this case, but IMO the best choice would be to have an EDIT YOUR VOTE option added in your own contributions, in case you changed your mind, or find new info after the fact, or accidentally hit the wrong vote the first time

Thank you music_junke!

You compliment me and I in turn compliment you on your detailed analysis and understanding of these issues here that I've noticed in passing. But being not one of the top mods here...I keep my mouth closed and only point out the "bugs" mostly not the complaints!

I was not going to write that much---in response to your posting in response to mine in response to your post replying to roxcyn.......and I passed by and saw your post and said...since I see by the online yellow dot that you're still here so why not post this and see what happens?

[Yes, you can imagine how my Emails on subjects like these can get very detailed...so this is much easier to post in to get my ideas out before they turn to fog or dust or whatever word you use....everyone has a different word].

Re-Response #1:

Starting with the last item first....as that is what prompted me:

even if you already voted on it. maybe you wouldn't have the ability to vote again in this case, but IMO the best choice would be to have an EDIT YOUR VOTE option added in your own contributions, in case you changed your mind, or find new info after the fact, or accidentally hit the wrong vote the first time

You poked the "hornet's nest there" I've designed and run a number of websites, with voting and surveying privileges so my answer is.....it depends upon what RAY would like to do!

Pro: You can keep researching after you post your vote, and if you find something new, you can post THAT as your new reason and change your vote (and of course I did it...I posted in large "RED" letters: "Changed Vote", so everyone would know its a new vote and not wonder why the vote tallies changed------I had to deal with voting in the 100's so I WOULD LOSE TRACK of votes too unless I did that trick for me!).

Pro: If I was thinking about something else when I posted it or the trackball rolled too far off , it can select the wrong dot and that gets posted. So being able to change your vote (like we can edit do currently for 15 minutes, edit our posts) is a great idea....
But mostly since this is not an "auto post" vote, as you not only have to select your choice, but then press the big blue [VOTE] Button to register your vote.

Con: Some of us are not consistent and if they want to really sabotage the voting system for some perceived slight elsewhere on the site, or what someone said or did to them--they can keep changing their vote back and forth...with so few voters these days that can wreck havoc with the system as to when it grabs out the final tallys.
Hey I understand some get upset at various times of the day/week, etc..... we're all human aren't we?
[Ok ok will all the Venusian's please keep to the right of the screen, Thank you!---Venus? Where are the Martians? Don't worry.....the Space Pirates scared them all off--now where was I ?]

Con: It might be a bunch of code writing, for not much usage, depending upon how many times its needed so maybe we first would need a poll or some indication of how often people want to change their votes....before Ray does a lot of coding to create this option!

What do you think?

Well I have a new wrinkle on your views....... When I vote, I want to understand WHY I'm voting so unless I absolutely trust the poster (just 3-4 here) I will go off on my own journey through Google and the entire world wide web universe searching until I'm satisfied I've found the answer...

ITS HARD ENOUGH to do this in English...
Unless you have a method I've missed.... copying and pasting original words in a search box in another language ...try Japanese/ Korean/K-Pop/ or some of the Slavic languages with different letter sets...DOES NOT get me information, even if I translate the page to English.

And for me....I copy and paste to search box, English Translations of titles of songs or groups or lyrics and just FORGET IT! The search does not help me at all with so many thousands of entries (or none!) That I just get "stuck" there...

So I take the lazy way out...as soon as I see a song in non-English language or anything like that I stop answering the entire queue ....even if it says 99+ left to go! So I could use a "skip" to at least see if there is another song that is NOT foreign that I might be able to vote on.

Like playing those board games....some of us (not me) cheat and look at the card on the Community Chest etc piles to see if they want to pick it up or do the other choice...not fair but I can't stop their fingers from doing that..... On web we can....you get BLOCKED from moving on until each person does their vote....

So that is my view of the review listing and why I do it sometimes, and other times I may not be able to move beyond my sticking point until the entire review list is freed up from the current group.

Just make a support thread and ask Ray if the link goes anywhere..... I don't think I've been there yet....I VOTE, I don't create the items for reviews as my search process takes too long to be certain before I enter any .
Since I've not been to that page I could not test the link myself..

Sorry to write so much explanations!

I re-read my posts....
Some sites I deal with (technical ones) have "unlimited" editing properties for anyone who is a member and not a guest lurking in the shadows....

So, I re-read your earlier comment and think I have additional information for you (and Ray I'm positive, already knows this part)....

but if they DO have a login & didnt even bother to take time to setup a REAL profile (hence their name still says GUEST) then i doubt seriously that most of them are logging back in to see our LSI voting feedback, or if they bother to follow up even if they do login??

Have you checked out the Forum threads? Mainly the ones saying "Randomness Is The Answer #____" Its up to 191 now!

I can't tell you (explained below) how many people will find the site----or even a bot???
and actually take the time to create a full membership filling up all the spaces with either "?????" or [they are easily identified as not here to help us] by filling in the responses with some nonsense phrase i.e. Country "Your Mother" or some other cuss word....

Just so they can log in
Just so they can find a non-game thread like Randomness Is The Answer
Just so they can post an advertisement like: (best I can do from memory)

Hey guys!
I just found this great product!
For years I've had cramps in my legs!
But now I use Cramp-A-Way!
Its a Miracle!
Just go to this website!
Try it!
You'll buy it!

Or some other product.........I stole this product from recent TV ad that has been overplayed on local TV as I didn't have a current spam one to show you......

So Ray or some mod then removes the ad from the memory of the site...deletes it.

So your answer to the one excerpt I quoted from you above is that YES people or bots will take the microsecond it now takes to set up an account just to dump advertisements upon the unsuspecting members of this site and Ray and Mods work really hard to eliminate them.

This site---unlike most others so I give them props for that
does NOT let anyone post under "guest" without registering in full, though anyone can read and use the lyrics on the site without becoming a full fledged member.

I became a member to find one particular song that was haunting me through the halls and corridors of offices, elevators and stores for years....so I recorded it...and Shazam, Sound Hound, and other music-find apps failed to find it...Therefore! I then discovered this site with real human beings to help me locate the name and group for the mystery song!

So as I got help...I help others in return when they post in the "Please find this song!" type of threads, they all have different names as each new member makes up their own name!

That's my story for all to read......and know again.....

yes that's true Practice, and good point - there's bots out there now and yes it takes nanoseconds to setup a profile.. but putting BOTs aside, i just feel very skeptical that any actual HOOMAN who might have sent a song change request (for example, bc they were watching that one video for that one song that was haunting them in the hallways.. {ahem, to borrow a phrase, }).. perhaps they decide to make a few edits just that ONE time, maybe that was their only visit, maybe they have no interest in hanging around to participate as a regular mod.

my opinion comes mainly from the LSI leaderboard stats... if you look periodically, there's only about a dozen or so of us who pretty regularly rack up VI-Points.. which tells me most other edits done are by the here & there occasional visitors (apparently WITH a login?? ) but who are probably not paying alot of attention to any responses they might get from declined requests etc...

but that's just me not having faith in the general internet using public of today.. i could be wrong!

I can agree that the general internet traveling public is very flighty and roams from one app or site to another!
But Ray (and hundreds of other sites) have built their models around the "crowdsourcing" method, where the majority of people's opinions will be smarter than any one person's expert advice.

Hopefully that model will continue to provide information and data to increase all the internet sites and their databases brimming with valuable data. (Don't forget Google, et al, grabbing all that data in various ways for their own commercial, profitable purposes!)[I mention Google as they are on my radar lately, I think there are others busy doing this too so its not my being against Google doing this, just tip of the tongue recall].

I think from years ago (when I interviewed on the Forum, many of the older original members of LSI who were still here or remember those early heady days)--that many more visitors came to the site as guests---contributed what they needed to, got what they needed and left.

Hopefully Ray raises the site's standings in terms that Google appreciates, and then it will drive more visitors here, higher levels on search listings, and maybe with more guests more might stay and become part of that "Leaderboard" you mentioned above. Don't forget! (Ray too) that the Leaderboard is a relatively new innovation in the Internet and certainly here...and many more people came here over the years and contributed without requiring that they achieve point levels or compete against other members to do so....

Again from my experience, most organizations of any kind regularly have the ones who are highest on the list of "most valuable player" in their activities, then there are the dozens or so who actually do the "grunt work" (i.e. ALL the Moderators of the site, plus: Celine, Tabbydog, Aisha, Nicolas, Ralph, and of course....music_junkie herself!)..below that are the ones who can sometimes give a strong effort, and then move on to other pursuits.... {Artist Mods fit in here...as they help moderate dozens of artists themselves keeping their domains and pages all nice looking and up to date!] That is what generally makes up organizations of any type and LSI is no different on the Internet from those "brick and mortar" ones...
Short thought turned into a longer one as I wanted to give shout outs to everyone I can.

What do you all think?
