That's a new one for me Carl, I've never seen that happen after running chkdsk. When chkdsk ran, did it say it had found errors or bad sectors?

nope. and we haven't been able to boot it all day. i think when one of us hit the adobe upgrade, we might have picked up a virus. would be my luck.

Hey Carl,

Try powering on the PC and before it gets to the Windows logo, press the F8 key repeatedly. You should get a black screen with a few options. Use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode with Networking, then press enter. If this loads windows, login and then go to Start-All Programs-Accessories-System Tools-System Restore. If it loads, click next until you see a screen that says, Restore your computer to the state it was in before the selected event. Choose an event with a date prior to you running chkdsk and then hit next, then finish. After a few minutes, the computer will restart and hopefully fix the issue you're having.

I thought I posted this already, sorry....here is what I wrote this morning, Friday, 18 August 2014:
Hi Joe.... Will tell of a problem and since its late I'll try one method and let you know if it works or not...
Only new program was one requested install of Adobe (oh no not again!) update... seemed to go ok and Adobe functions.
But I think since that date no sound from speakers on laptop at all.
Prerecorded items on computer play---no sound even when volume is up 100%.. You Tube and ads on web no longer play sounds.
Celine is reporting such issues too..
Will close everything down, restart procedures (check F8 if I need to start in safe mode with networking and see if I can get web or something to play in that mode)
Will report back when I get back online results in case others are experiencing same issue---but asking you if current Adobe update is causing that because I hate using Restore as I lose too much work here....
Thanks!

Have you tried the audio troubleshooting wizard? Go to start-help and support and search for audio troubleshooting. Then open it and let it run. It might fix the issue for you
