Hi, need some help here, my sound from my computer has died

well pretty much dead, I have my sound running through a stereo and it has worked fine for years, it started cracking and crap, and now the cracking has gone but the volume is really low. I have looked at the volume controls and they are fine, I have played the radio on the stereo and it is fine, so it isnt the stereo, I have also played a cd through the computer and that is bad too, so it isnt winamp, i have checked all the connections etc, nothing is loose, so any ideas?

its probably your soundcard

do you have AIM/Yahoo/MSN messengers?

Cause I might be able to fix the problem, but it's hard to explain.

Hum, one of my teachers had that problem. the sound controls were fine adn so were the stareos...
