I suggest checking the date that's set on your computer. I know this sounds like something dumb that wouldn't cause problems but a while back due to some power outages the year on my computer got changed and that F'd up a bunch of programs, including MSN.

^^ I also had that problem with the time & date. It does screw up MSN if it happens to be wrong.
If that's not the problem, try adding these 2 lines in the HOSTS archives (not sure if that's how you call them in english, but oh well).
65.54.239.80 messenger.hotmail.com
65.54.239.80 dp.msnmessenger.akadns.net
You can find those HOSTS archives following these steps:
Windows XP = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Windows 2K/NT = C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Win 98/ME = C:\WINDOWS
Since I added those two lines, my MSN stopped having connection problems.
