I'm just wondering... WHY!?!?!? do the Americans call it "soccer" and not its proper name? And where's the foot come in? in American Football?

The word 'soccer' is credited to an Englishman, Charles Wreford-Brown, which is apparently an abbreviation for 'association football'. So we didn't make the word, we just stole it.

American football is called football here because it is a variation of the game you call football, initially created by a coach at Yale in 1880. Which probably became popular over here before the original game did, causing it to keep the name football and the nickname, soccer, to be used for the original game.

The question is not whether one is more fun than the other, but why the americans call it "soccer". Look I find rugby exciting too, I saw england beat france the other day, but I am for football, since I play it and have a fixed position on my school team.

Basically Americans named it just to piss off people on music forums not from the USA.

yeah well. americans are different from other nationalities. they call jelly 'jello' and jeans 'pants'. they just say stuff differently to us. i am on a good social networking site that has many american people as members. i have to say that whenever i talk about football it means soccer, so that they don't get confused.

It's short form of "Association football". I have no idea why it's preferred over football, though. Football is played with the foot, so calling it football makes more sense.
