Hi! I thought I'd post a fun poll. I want you guys to guess how many, if any, unread emails I have in my primary email. Edit: I have had my email for 21 years.

After enough people have voted, I'll reveal the answer.

I've had this one email for almost ten years and they've never warned me that the account will lose all of its saved emails... So, it's invalid.

Depends upon the provider Jeff! Some are really generous ...they just let you stay on and on WITHOUT asking you to visit at any set interval...as they get revenue from selling your Email address or ads or whatever they do to keep the site up and running and storing all those expanding Emails filled with memory eating photos and .gifs available today!

If your mom doesn't have an email, how is she getting emails?

Congratulations, Joey and SonOMyRightHand. I've had Yahoo Mail since I was a freshman in high school. I have the free plan as I doubt I'd pay for email. I'm not sure how much space they give each person.

I get a lot of promo emails from stores and websites. It seems to be neverending. I gave up around 2014 to being caught up reading and the emails just keep coming.

The current total is 27 398 as of tonight. It was in the same range the entire game.

I would add......it all depends upon how many Emails you are receiving per day...
If you get more than you can keep up with, even with filtering by sender/topic...you are bound to end up with 1000's unread that may or may not be able to be easily deleted or ignored!

You're all insane!

Interesting poll idea regardless. From the standpoint of someone who has never let their e-mails pile up, seeing a glimpse into other people's habits is simply unbelievable. I probably get way less e-mails than some of you, but I still don't understand why you wouldn't just delete the spam/promo e-mails to keep your e-mail tidy. Or even better, just unsubscribe from any unwanted spam/promo e-mails! That's always done the trick for me, and I receive very little spam as a result.

I used to be like you, Nicholas. I felt the need to keep the unread at zero. But at some point, I just stopped caring. And not caring feels so much better. Once you let go, you can't believe why you ever bothered to keep going through and deleting. It feels pointless, because the unread don't bother me. And yes, there are spam/promo emails I could unsubscribe to, but that's not all of the unread emails. I get a lot of receipts for instance that I don't need to read, but I don't know if I can opt out of, and I may need if something it wrong with what I bought.

It just brings up the interesting question of what the purpose of even having an e-mail is if it's not going to be maintained. If you have thousands of unread e-mails, I don't see how it's even usable. I think it all just depends on personality types. Overall, I'm a very organized person and always have been - I function on routines and schedules. Plus, as I said, I probably get way less e-mails than some of you do, so it's not like it's a huge task to maintain.

I don't understand that. The new emails are at the top, so I always see what's new. And if I need to find something older, I search for it.

Yeah, it probably is personality types. But strangely, I still can't let anything be unread in my work mail. Not just because it's work and it's important, but because it bothers me if something is marked as unread. But only there.

Like I said I used to be like that, Nicolas. I do like to keep email tidy. I do special programs so if I unsubscribe then I can't do their program. As for the important email I can use search. Work email I always go through (not associated with my personal) as that's what they're paying me to do.

Wondering (maybe this is good for a new poll?)

What are everyone's habits with normal mail?
Snail mail?

I see Lisa says.....

And yes, there are spam/promo emails I could unsubscribe to, but that's not all of the unread emails. I get a lot of receipts for instance that I don't need to read, but I don't know if I can opt out of, and I may need if something it wrong with what I bought.

For instance credit card receipts and other important bills that once paid, someone must keep around for the "tax man" [or known as IRS] here in the US, so they have to be accessible up until taxes are paid April 15th of the next year..
AND potentially for 7 years beyond that.

[Caveat: of course those who live their lives entirely within Email and all their accounts are Emailed bills and payments to and from their banks are done electronically so they receive zero paper normal mailings per year!.... So then its all just kept in computer's memory or up in the cloud if you pay for that per year].

and for Nicholas:

but I still don't understand why you wouldn't just delete the spam/promo e-mails to keep your e-mail tidy. Or even better, just unsubscribe from any unwanted spam/promo e-mails! That's always done the trick for me, and I receive very little spam as a result.

Interesting...so how do you put a lock on the real mail box and tell everyone not to send you restaurant menus or freebie coupon books, or dozens and dozens of catalogs as the holiday seasons approach? So I'm certain your real mail box has lots of mail that every day you have to sort through physically and toss/read/file each item!

Here it's a common thing for people to put a "no advertisement" sign on their mailbox, so I don't get that much any more. Although still get the junk that is addressed to me.

Update!

The total went to around 35K unread. I've been working the last few months to go through it all (one by one). And Thursday April 30th, 2020 I got it down to 0 unread email messages! Whoop Whoop!
