"Am" chord fingering for guitar

so i can find the fingerings for the chords am/c, am/e, am/f, am/f#, am/g, and am/g# but what is just "am" or how do i figure out wich of the am/x chords to use?

sorry if this is a totally stupid question but im just learning and im completely puzzled

I dotn play guitar but I do play piano and I would guess "am" is A Minor...a chord.

To play Aminor...

On the A string, press the 3rd fret.
On the D string, press the 3rd fret.
On the G string, press the 3rd fret.
On the B string, press the 1st fret.

oh jeez, move the other 2 "3rd frets" to 2nd fret.
