Sometimes I Wake Up In the Middle of the Night.

a play consisting of various monologues from a teenaged perspective. about teenaged issues.

the problem is, because its being put on at a catholic highschool, half of the topics, words, ideas and feelings directly relevant to what it means and is to be a teenager has been deleted.
every thought about sex presented in these monologues... omitted. every reference to a drug or drip of alcohol... erased. anything that would be slightly offensive to anyone has been dealt with.

and I,
I am apawled.

not only because of their thorough destruction of this piece of art, or by their betrayal of its integrity.. but because they are lying to themselves and they are lying to society if they choose to keep these things out of the play.
sure, some of it is offensive.
but its offensive for a reason.
it shocks you, and its that shock value that makes you open your eyes to it.
what it is is reality.
reality is offensive. you can't sugar coat it. you don't edit your thoughts or your language or your labidos.
if a few audience members can't accept whatever is offensive in that play, then they can't accept reality. they can't accept life. nothing is perfect. especially when it comes to teenagers.
teenagers, not all, but plenty, experiment with alcohol and drugs and sex. if they don't experiment then they at least think about it. and a monologue is supposed to reflect those thoughts.
why remove every reference to sex and pretend like its not an issue? like we don't think about it? we're young, hormonal, and horny. what would we be without horemones?
why not address the drinking problems? why not accept that they are real and are real issues?
why not shed some light on sexual abuse and suicide?
THESE THINGS ARE REAL. and by censoring them from a play about teenage issues, you leave the play hallow, without its original purpose, to enlighten, shock, and entertain.

i'm disgusted, that a form of art, of self expression, in todays society, is opressed. isnt' self expression in the least. because the main things we want to express "are offensive".

Censorship is too inconsistant...

Shelters these kids from stuff that certainly should be talked about...

And then doesn't save me from tubgirl...

ugh...

yea... i'm right angry. I refused to act in it... decided to be stage manager and give directorial input... becuase again, i'm just that opinionated... and I cant stop arguing with the authority figures about it.

they won't even let "damn" be in the play.
we did grease when I was in grade nine.. I played one of the leads, and apparently one of the women in the audience stood up in the middle and yelled something like "THIS SMUT IN A CATHOLIC SCHOOL?!" (they'd editted the actual vulgar things out of the play already.. all that was left was a pregnancy scare, that they dumbed down so there weren't any offensive analogies, and kids making out in parks.. which are things that happen) this woman then went on to preach to the surrounding audience, then made her way to the office to make a more formal complaint ot the principal.
this is apparently why we are now censoring everything.
I, along with everyone else in the actual show, have no recollection of this super catholic womans outburst.
and if its going to make them delete most of what makes up another play, why not just choose something else?

Sticker this, censor this, ban this
We've got something to say
Police this, condemn this, damn this
We'll be heard anyway
Middle finger is the flag that I wave when I'm
Silenced

Listen here

Is it a possibility?
That we are all just equal
Slam the power down
Abusing
Does it piss you off to be beat at your own game?
You lead us with false morals and shelter reality

No more...We're not buying your product when
Your selling
The words preaching silence

Insult me in my home
When you were never invited
To live life on your curve
Frustrating
Throw sticks into the spokes
To relieve insecurities
Stifle all ascension and sticker our freedom of speech

Sticker this, censor this, ban this
We've got something to say
Police this, condemn this, damn this
We'll be heard anyway
Middle finger is the flag that I wave when I'm
Silenced
Silenced

Don't tell me what I want
Don't tell me what I need
Don't tell me how I need to feel
I feel, Goddamn nothing
Dig the eyes out of my face and I can still see right
Fucking through you
Fuck you and everything you are
I'm me, we're us and thats all
Closed mind with a forum to criticize
Keep your policy and I've got mine
Exploit me, fabricate your lies
We empower these cowards just to be left in
Silence

Listen here

Stand on my soapbox
And speak my own peace
Whatever you may think
It's real
Prevail through what is me
And step on your beliefs
Thieving spineless sellouts
Robbing our integrity

Bring it on!

Sticker this, censor this, ban this
We've got something to say
Police this, condemn this, damn this
We'll be heard anyway
Middle finger is the flag that I wave when I'm

this song says it all...I need not say more

but the thing is... its not your super catholic highschool... we don't have uniforms.. rarely have masses... all there really is is required christian ethics class (last year the teacher was a super ex hippie/forest gump-esque person.. this year a super nice lady who swears and talks about her healthy satisfying sex life) theres a morning prayer.. there are two masses a year.
other than that, its your regular hoodlum filled public highschool.. we aren't sheltered.
but they like to pretend that we are, and that we know nothing else.

catholicism has a way of censoring things they don't want to see. a sort of "ostrich" technique to let themselves keep believing what they will without facing the real world.

or sheltering people thinking it'll help them somehow. i just find it MUCH more present in christian/catholic schools.

regular schools do it too, which is a load of bullshit. i can understand not presenting a child with horrid and gruesome things that you don't see very often but censoring things that are present and common is complete crap.

that's why said catholic high school=sheltered.

it is really quite retarculous.. how can we deal with the real world if they refuse to present it to us?

parents do the same thing. well some will.

they(parents, ect.) shelter you from what is and instead present you with "yes/no" answers to the world before you know what it really is. which results in experimentation and useless knowlegde. which may be the reason the catholic school around here has a lot of pregnant teens. ah well.

they don't understand everyone needs to UNDERSTAND the world rather then be told "yes/no" on how things are. people must think for themselves and not be presented with an answer that they didn't come up with; it'll just make them curious as to how the answer came to be in the first place.
