| its not a question, but i want to let everyone know that atheism is NOT worshipping the devil--think about it ppl, if i dont beleive in god(a greater good) how and WHY would i beleive in satan(a greater evil)? puh...... | 0 @ 02-08-2004 07:01 nefariouslady_t | 11,509 posts
| Okay probably a silly question but I always wondered why if you are a practicing Catholic you can only eat fish on (I think it is on) Friday and no other types of meats on that day. | 0 @ 02-08-2004 07:10 vandy | 9,508 posts
| Before the second Vatican council, it was customary that Catholics abstained from meat on Fridays. After the second Vatican council, it became a standard practice to abstain from meat only on Fridays during Lent and on Ash Wednesday. The reason for this is that Jesus died on a Friday, and it is the Catholic way of showing respect by making a small sacrifice that way. (I don't know why fish isn't considered meat in this case.) | 0 @ 02-08-2004 07:15 nefariouslady_t | 11,509 posts
| Thanks Meg, I always felt silly to ask that. But it makes sense now. =) | 0 @ 02-08-2004 08:04 Shira88 | 12,250 posts
| How nice, now I'm wont have to start a thread for this question. I always wondered about it: In Christianity there are all these saints or something, so my question is, who are they and why are they saints ir what did they do?
(I feel stupid now, but hell) | 0 @ 02-08-2004 14:51 x0babiejennz | 4,502 posts
| well saints are normal people
i know this sounds wierd but its true, me and you could very well become a saint.
theres a whole bunch of saints, there are patron saints inwhich people pray to theres patron saints for orphans, teenagers, rape victims and a lot more.
a saint has to be dead to become a saint, and i think had to have three miracles, meaning if someone had a vision of someone they prayed to.
they have to be acknowledged for saint hood, and the pope annoints them.
theres a lot more to it but i think that sums it up | 0 @ 02-08-2004 19:59 cjaym88 | 158 posts
| The Biblical saints are people who gave up everything to follow Jesus. The apostles were saints, Paul, Timothy...
But we don't worship the saints, we learn from them. We only worship Christ. Without Him, the saints were nothing. And so are we. | 0 @ 02-08-2004 20:01 NightHobbit | 23,464 posts
| Clya so are you saying with out a saint or God we're not worthy or justified as a person. | 0 @ 02-08-2004 20:09 Shira88 | 12,250 posts
| Right, thanks for the explenation. | 0 @ 02-08-2004 23:04 vandy | 9,508 posts
| Louise honey,
*hugs*
That's not what anyone's saying. What he said was that saints would not be who they are if it weren't for the saving grace of God. | 0 @ 07-08-2004 12:38 Plantagenet | 12,864 posts
| I don't know why fish isn't considered meat in this case.
it's because in the old days, meat was a luxuary product, fish was in most countries much easier to get, so much cheaper. therefor, ppl made the little sacrifice eating a "poorer" meal on friday. | 0 @ 07-08-2004 12:51 Plantagenet | 12,864 posts
| about saints: there are different kinds of saints and so there are also rangs of saints (widespread and locals)
- apostles
- first christian martyrs (the martyrs of the prosecutions of the Roan emperors until the early 4th century)
- Churchfathers (confessors, men who made interpretations on the bible, a very important part of catholic tradition and bible-reding, the 4 most important Churchfathers of the early christian church were Anthonius, Hieronymus, Gregorius and Ambrosius, later, imortant scolars were also calculated in this group, like Thomas of Aquinas (13th century), Anselm of Canterbury (12th century)
- founders of religious orders (like St-Francis of Assisi, founder of the franciscans, or St-Dominius, founder of the Domninicans, etc)
-martyrs after the early christian church ( a whole bunch of people were still being executed, although christinanity was the official religion. Most of the later martyrs come from the period of the reformation and the religious wars in teh 16th century, one of them is the englih chancellor and humanist Thomas More)
- ppl with some sort of charisma, who were highly thought of by a religious community during their life and after their deaths, mostly ppl devoting their lives to religion, the chruch and charity.
- saints of the Counter-reformation (ppl who were important figures to the re-living of the catholic church in the late 16th and 17h entury (like Carrolus Borromeus, St-Theresa of Avilla, Rosa of Lima, etc)
ok, I hope I kind of list them all, of course there are also some sort of rules to make someoen a saint, but most of those are based on legends, cause if every saint really had done 3 miricals, heh, the word should have been a better place! hehe!
But, Saints are important figures to teh catholic church, their the exapmles to common people, on how to devote your live to religion and how to live a religious life, now, we don't literaly have to follow thier lives, but we have to take what is fittable in our lives.

| a christian relgion is any religion that belives that jesus was the son of god, was born of a virgin, was crucified and died, and rose again.
there are many different denominations of christianity, they all interpret the bible differently and so they all belive slightly different things, but they all belive that jesus is salvation | 0 @ 08-08-2004 05:26 batmanpinkypunk | 22,426 posts
| 2 of my friends are jewish and he proposed to her but couldnt get on one knee b/c it was against the religon. can someone tell me why? | 0 @ 08-08-2004 08:48 Shira88 | 12,250 posts
| He couldn't get on one knee probably because 1) It's as if he bows down to her, and it's forbidden because you can only bow down to god, or 2) getting on one knee is a tradition of the goyim- the none Jewish people, and he can't do it because he's Jewish. | 0 @ 08-08-2004 12:46 Plantagenet | 12,864 posts

as explained by someone above, Christianity is the whole group, but it's devided in different groupings:
(from old to new)
- orthodox church: first church founded by the apostles (mostly John and Paul), now mostly in Eastern Europe, Russia and Middle east.
- catholic church: the Church of Rome, founded by the apostle Peter, who was the first Pope, this one is the biggest grouping, spread all over the world (mainly half of the western european countries, south america)
- protestants: this group is again devided in hundreds of different sub-groupings, the first protestant movement that still go on today come from the 16th centuy Reformation, started by Maarten Luther (lutheranism) and Jean Calvin (calvinism). They went in against the Church of Rome and specially clericals and the sacraments. Today protestantism is also spead all over the world, but as I said, in many different forms.
There is a sort of middle-one between catholicism and protestantism, and that is the Church of England, founded by Henry VIII of England in 1530ies and bettered by his daughter Elizabeth I. | 0 @ 08-08-2004 14:39 BoOtAy426 | 11,302 posts

| From what I've heard, satanism, isnt about worshipping the devil, it about worshipping yourself. No wonder people like it so much, its what they do anyways. | 0 @ 08-08-2004 23:03 biteme13 | 6,780 posts
| That's a different way of putting it.
Anyway, Jehovah's Witnesses are like Christians, but they have several different beliefs:
1. The beleive that people who do not follow God but are not worthy of hell go to a lower kingdom.
2. You aren't allowed to do blood transfusions and stuff.
There's more but I can't think of it now. They come to talk to us every Saturday even though we're Catholic, so that's how I know it. | 0 @ 08-08-2004 23:12 almightybob | 3,000 posts

| I think Wicca has to do with using the power of nature. | 0 @ 08-08-2004 23:27 court_lew_0216 | 508 posts
| wiccans are not really witches but they invoke the powers of the earth to use it for spells for good not evil. They believe in Manoh(sp) which is kind of like the universe but its not like a god, its a force |
