I bought this for a friend's birthday recently, along with 'Collected Poems' (the complete - I think - collection of her work). Given the person in question, I can imagine the journals being a heavy ready (the poetry too, probably).

Oh, yes, definitely is. But with all journals/diaries there are also so many entries that are just so mundane & average that I just struggle through them. I end up putting the book down & not going back to it for ages.

LAPD '53 by James Ellroy. It's eh so far. I love the way Ellroy writes but overall it's a bit lacking.

just finished BossyPants by Tina Fey and halfway through the Psychopath test by Jon Ronson, Ronson is a pretty engaging writer and I'm enjying a writer who expresses his own self doubt about his material

Fey's book was fantastic, she's the best

Just finished the last volume of Criminal & was slightly disappointed. It was a bit anti-climatic compared to the other volumes & a very different style from the rest of them so it was just a bit unexpected. Also finished reading The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins. A decent quick read.

What if? by Randall Munroe. Love xkcd, and this book is pretty much right along those lines

I'm slowly making my way through Simone de Beauvoir's 'The Mandarins'.

I read a Woman Destroyed by Simone de Beauvoir ages ago & I was so excited to read it but I just couldn't get into it at all. I honestly found most of the stories frustrating. And everyone gave me such rave reviews about her. I don't know if I just picked the wrong book or if she's not for me.

I know the feeling. I don't hate this, but I feel like I must not comprehend its importance or something, because it doesn't seem special at all to me. :s

Yesssss. Someone told me about how she's such a feminist icon after I read the book. & one of the stories was about a woman staying with her husband while she knows he's cheating on her & it was just so frustrating to read. It didn't read as a feminist icon or even all that good to me. I felt like I wasn't able to find the importance in the story either that clearly everyone else saw.

I've heard that about her, too. So far this book has been about a marriage where the woman rarely leaves the house and doesn't want to do anything but love her husband (a frustrated writer/publisher who she knows cheats on her - very similar themes...?), and another couple who...I can't even remember. The woman's a psychiatrist and has a grumpy daughter who likes sex. The men talk a lot about politics and often seem pretentious. I really feel like I'm missing the point. :p

Okay what you're reading makes me definitely think that she's just not for me then. I couldn't read another book like that.

I'd read The Second Sex, because I think that's meant to be the big one, but probably none of her others.

I'm reading 'Mr Penumbra's 24-hour Bookstore'. I just started it, but I already feel I'm gonna love it. It has that sort of undefined magic.
