| I am caught between deciding on an electric keyboard or a acoustic guitar.
I have thought about an electric guitar, but I'm not sure, what's better, for beginners.
I've had bad things said to me about each:
Acoustic Guitar: Hard to play, and only consdier if your commited and you want all you're songs to sound country western.
Electric Keyboard: Only the quality ones you can get are expensive, or you get stuckw ith second hand ones or really crpapy ones.
What do you lot suggest? |

| I suggest guitar. I'm a pianist and have been for 10 years, and let me tell you, the only electric keyboards worth buying are about 10,000$. I have a crappy one, and let me tell you, it ain't worth it. | 19-07-2004 21:52 danastasia | 19,287 posts
| Acoustic guitar, TRUST ME.
It's so much easier to pick up and play - I had keyboard lessons and taught myself guitar but am way better at guitar.
Plus, it gives you the chance to be more emotional with it, what with unlimited volume and chord patterns etc. as opposed to the general monotomy of a keyboard.
Get a guitar, you won't regret it!
Plus, you can play Jimmy Eat World, it's so easy to play Hear You Me and My Sundown! | 19-07-2004 21:52 ellessilver | 2,223 posts
| I'd say guitar too...I've played piano for 7 years, and I've recently started playing again, but I also have played about a year of guitar, and I love it... I think that guitars are also seriously cheaper-the 10 000 thing is true... I really like piano, but I think that I like guitar more. I guess it's just what sounds better to you! Good luck in either! | 19-07-2004 21:55 danastasia | 19,287 posts
| Oh, and try and get a steel string guitar as opposed to a nylon one - it's worth the investment! | 19-07-2004 21:57 DeathByMonkeys | 24,877 posts
| Danny, yours sounds great either way, so shaddup about the nylon vs. steel thing.... | 19-07-2004 21:57 danastasia | 19,287 posts
| Mine's nylon, about 30 years old and I love it lol. | 19-07-2004 21:58 dismissed | 10,611 posts

| I'd say guitar, because there's a lot of songs on electric guitar which can also be played on acoustic. And stuff like Radiohead is good on acoustic it makes a good sound on its own, and you can take it places and entertain people. I play electric guitar, and I used to play piano, and the guitar has been so much more fun in my experience, but it really depends on you... | 19-07-2004 22:07 blessed_be64 | 218 posts
| well i have and play both.pick guitar.u don't have to play country songs only.i play tons of songs that aren't. | 19-07-2004 22:54 NightHobbit |

| what's the difference between steel string and nylon?
I think I'll get an acoustic, for the sake I want to produce my own tunes. And have msuical talent not only in lyrics but songwriting.
And keyboards (I've tried piano and it was boring) sound boring.
Thanks, what acosutics do you recomened? | 20-07-2004 00:48 offcenter488 | 305 posts
| yeah definetly guitar
electric is a lot easier to play but I think it's better to learn acoustic first. It's alot more basic and once you have it down then if you want you can get into eletric.
so yeah, acoustic guitar
But, then again, its all about personal opinion too | 20-07-2004 00:49 blondy925 | 630 posts

| I'd go with the keyboard. It doesn't matter how good it is, as long as it has a MIDI port on it you can interface it with your computer. That lets it use your computer's MIDI soundbanks for some amazing sounds | 20-07-2004 17:03 bihetterocks | 9 posts
| OH well I played violin and piano for a couple of years, and then I started guitar and I really love it! I started off with an accoustic steel-strings one ad now I'm considirin buyin an electric one
Guitar seems to be the best coz u can take it wherever u want I mean it's a bit hard to carry to carry a piano on your back and it's even better if it's an accoustic one u don't need amplifiers and stuff, so u can play it whereva u want: in your room, on the beach, in a park.... But at some point u will want to try an electric one and it's all fine as well!
In addition to that, guitar is way easier to learn than piano, trust me! an it makes u look so cool!
As for me, I think drums are the next instrument on my list | 20-07-2004 17:11 manders | 1,302 posts
| I've been playing piano for about 7 years now. I just recently started taking guitar lessons. I do think guitar is harder, but I think it's more enjoyable to play. You would just have to practice more on the guitar than you would on the piano. |
