Scott, I don't believe that's how searchable aliases are put in. I think only Ray or Alinda can input them. For example, if you search "ELO", Electric Light Orchestra will pop up, but that's not part of the sortname. Whereas when I type "Girlfriends" in the search box, Bent Shapes doesn't appear.
From what I've gathered, the sortname is just how the artist name should be sorted in a list. It has nothing to do with searchability. Normally it changes when the artist has a "The" in their name (such as Beatles, The) and I haven't seen it used for aliases.

Kopecky [US-TN] (right)
The Kopecky Family Band (wrong)
They changed their name to Kopecky. The bracketed country is there because a metal band of the same name also exists.

Thanks for correcting me. I guess it doesn't do that.

Also, if you read Ray's original post above, he says "Only I (Ray) can add an alias, so if it would not be clear for me to add an alias, mention this explicitly in your post."

Please remove Austin Powers - not a real artist. The movies have their own pages here and the soundtracks should be listed on their respective movie pages.

Finger Eleven (right)
Rainbow Butt Monkeys (wrong)
RBM was their previous name. They only recorded one album under the name and it's already listed in Finger Eleven's archive, so everything on RBM's archive can be deleted and it can be made a searchable alias for Finger Eleven instead.

She collaborated with The Flaming Lips on her most recent album, but it's only credited to her. It's not a dual credit album.

Please make 78violet a searchable alias for Aly & AJ. They used this name for a while, but have since changed it back to Aly & AJ.

Wayne's World 2 (wrong)
Again, this is a movie, not an artist. All of the tracks on the artist page are just songs on the soundtrack, with the "featured artist" being the actual artist that did the track.

Starfucker (right)
Strfkr (wrong)
I know I posted this in Moderation Repetition a long time ago but I guess Snap recreated it. STRFKR is just an alternate way the band stylizes their name. All content should go under the former name.
Once the dupe is deleted could you please make STRFKR a searchable alias for them instead, so this page doesn't get created again and people can be led to the correct page? Thanks.

Up to date!
Excellent work guys!! Many thanks!
Since I'm not alwasy the fastest with making action on the points listed in this topic (my list is pernanently overloaded ) ... what about this?
Of course I'll keep monitoring this topic as always, so keep posting if my help is needed.

Correct. The "sort" name is only used for sorting results internally (search results and artist browse index). So this field is only used internally, it's not even used to display the artist name. Looking at The Beatles example, entering "Beatles, The" instructs the results sorter to sort it in the order b-e-a-t-l-e-s-t-h-e instead of "t-h-e-b-e-a-t-l-e-s". Strictly spoken, also "Beatl" could be entered, which will probably accurate/long enough for sorting.
About aliasses. An alias is added to the search index, so that searching on the alias also point to the given artist. Ony I can add aliasses.
MCSMeister | 18-10-2016 21:54
There's a few artists you forgot to delete per usual but I won't post them this time, as it seems super mods can apparently delete artists now, so I'll tend to them once you fix the feature (it gives me an error when I try to delete any). However, the searchable aliases aren't working, either. Do those take some time to update? I'll continue to post those here since only you can add those.
MCSMeister | 19-10-2016 20:59
Hmm, a full 24 hours have passed and the searchable aliases still aren't working. Any update?
---
Please make:
Barnstorm a searchable alias for Joe Walsh
Tubeway Army a searchable alias for Gary Numan
I had these artists deleted already but never mentioned to make them aliases.

I thought I already commented in here about aliasses, but I don't see my comment anymore
Anyways, aliasses are added to the search index on the next search index rebuild. These rebuilds happen on mondays.

I didn't find your comment either about aliasses, (except for the FAQ about name changes in the heading to this thread), so thanks for adding to the information about the processes that go on silently behind the scenes (so we know when to write about something, only after the gears inside LSI have done their work!).
MCSMeister | 01-11-2016 14:14
Well, since the last search rebuild happened, I tested all of the aliases. Besides the two listed above, some still need to be added. I also added some new ones to the list that should probably be added to help searchability - some minor variations in artist names that don't show the artist in the search at all, for example.
A7X for Avenged Sevenfold
Aleksander Vinter for Savant
Astaire for Blondfire
Caustic Window and Polygon Window for Aphex Twin
D.R.U.G.S. for Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows
E40 for E-40
The Jakes for Young the Giant
Iain Matthews for Ian Matthews
JXL for Junkie XL
Macintosh Plus for Vektroid
Party Next Door for PARTYNEXTDOOR
TRUSTcompany for Trust Company
Thanks very much!

Nicolas : I thought the alias thing was in the other thread Rename this artist please.
I have submitted a few aliases (i.e. Whinnie Williams, formerly Sunday Girl) there, not here.
2. Name change
On LSI we use the last/current working artist name, so if the artist changed their name, it should be changed on LSI also. The old name will be added as alias so that LSI search engine can forward search request on the old name to the new name. Only I (Ray) can add an alias, so if it would not be clear for me to add an alias, mention this explicitly in your post.

I don't think it matters. Ray still tended to most of the ones I posted here, and I've been posting them here ever since artist mods could rename artists, since Ray is likely checking this thread more than the other one now that we have that privilege.
Of course, now we can remove artists too, so I'm just posting here out of habit. If Ray prefers I post aliases in the other thread, then I'll do so, but he hasn't made mention of it yet.

Found an artist that needs to be removed? You can do that here. Of course, be 100% sure the artist needs to be removed. Check Wikipedia or Google or any other resources. Include this info in you post, that is very helpful for the reviewers!
So, when do we remove artists?
1. Duplicate
We do not want duplicate artists. The may be variations with incorrect spellings. These maps need to be deleted. But before doing that, we need to transfer the content from the misspelled artist to the artist with the correct spelling (see instructions how to do that below).
2. Incorrect "type"
Names have an "artist" type or "movie/TV show/compilation/...". If the artist is actually a movie, it needs to be deleted and recreated as a movie. Note that flipping the type between artist and movie types is not possible.
3. Non-existing
Artists that do not exist (fake) obviously need to be removed.
When not to remove an artist
1. The artist is misspelled
If the artist is misspelled and an artist with the correct spelling does not already exists, then simply request a name change in the Rename This Artist Please topic.
2. The artist changed their name
It's not uncommon that artists change their names. On LSI we add this new name as new map and link the old name to this new map. No deleting of any artists is involved here. For artist name changes you can use the New Way Of Dealing With Artist Name Changes.
How to submit a removal request in this topic
1. mention the artist name that needs to be removed
2. link the name to its map using the LSI artist-tag
3. mention the reason for removal
4. if content of the artist needs to be transferred to another map (for example to the artist with the correct spelling that is also listed on LSI) add+ link this artist name.
