Remove an artist

Found an artist that needs to be removed? You can do that here. Of course, be 100% sure the artist needs to be removed. Check Wikipedia or Google or any other resources. Include this info in you post, that is very helpful for the reviewers!

So, when do we remove artists?

1. Duplicate

We do not want duplicate artists. The may be variations with incorrect spellings. These maps need to be deleted. But before doing that, we need to transfer the content from the misspelled artist to the artist with the correct spelling (see instructions how to do that below).

2. Incorrect "type"

Names have an "artist" type or "movie/TV show/compilation/...". If the artist is actually a movie, it needs to be deleted and recreated as a movie. Note that flipping the type between artist and movie types is not possible.

3. Non-existing

Artists that do not exist (fake) obviously need to be removed.

When not to remove an artist

1. The artist is misspelled

If the artist is misspelled and an artist with the correct spelling does not already exists, then simply request a name change in the Rename This Artist Please topic.

2. The artist changed their name

It's not uncommon that artists change their names. On LSI we add this new name as new map and link the old name to this new map. No deleting of any artists is involved here. For artist name changes you can use the New Way Of Dealing With Artist Name Changes.

How to submit a removal request in this topic

1. mention the artist name that needs to be removed
2. link the name to its map using the LSI artist-tag
3. mention the reason for removal
4. if content of the artist needs to be transferred to another map (for example to the artist with the correct spelling that is also listed on LSI) add+ link this artist name.

Do we need both Alan Parsons and The Alan Parsons Project? Pretty sure it should be Alan Parsons Project.

Actually, yes - Alan Parsons recorded several albums under his own name, not with the Project - see his discography on Wikipedia, there's a section that says "as a solo artist".

But tons of stuff is listed under both - not necessary! I just signed up to moderate Alan Parsons Project but I'm not doing both and the songs don't need to be listed under both. And since it refuses to let me "remove" songs or albums for artists that I'm moderating, I can't really clean up the mess with all the unnecessary mess listed under both.

Well, any dupe content should be deleted and any wrongly-attributed content should be transferred to the proper one, but both artist pages should stay. Feel free to PM a mod to delete any dupes.

I do think the Alan Parsons Project songs that say "featuring Alan Parsons" are redundant, though, and he can be removed as a featured artist from those.

Whenever I try to "remove" a song or album it won't allow it and one of the super moderators like Joey or Celine have to do it for me so I'm just going to "unmod" from Alan Parsons Project. It's too much of a mess to clean up unless you have the powers of the super mods.

Well, like I said, you can PM the mods to delete any dupes you need. Normal users can't delete content. You can, however, transfer content on your own.

I am a moderator - just not one of the 4 super moderators.

Right, I mean normal users that aren't super mods can't delete content. Ray made it this way because regular artist mods were deleting songs important to charts and site revenue.

Flashdance [1983] (right)
Flashdance (wrong)
Flash Dance (wrong)

There actually is a band called Flashdance, but currently both of these archives have songs from the Flashdance movie in them. So Flashdance can stay (just delete the song it has), but Flash Dance can be deleted.

Prinz Pi (also right, but we don't need two)

He goes by Prinz Pi now, I guess. Realized Porno was a stupid name.

Céline I see you messing with that and you know I like to scream at you when you do. Please leave it alone for Aisha. I need her to create an alias.

Okay, but most of the songs on that page belonged to the other group. I see you deleted them, though, so thanks.

Please make Leslie Phillips a searchable alias for Sam Phillips, as she used that name early in her career.

(I know this should probably go in the Rename thread, but I figure that Ray is mostly checking this one, so it's probably better that it goes here so he notices it.)

Rent
Rent [2005] movie
Rent Original Broadway Cast

Rent - movie and Rent - cast are both listed under "Rent". Either "Rent" needs to be removed and separate listings for the movie and Broadway cast or remove the movie and Broadway cast and leave plain "Rent" with both movie and cast recording. OMG this gets confusing!!
