People have been whining about things like Confederate symbols on state flags and such. What I want to know is: why? Can't these people realize that this is, whether they like it or not, part of our culture?
Also, our right to sue has gotten way out of hand. How about the people who are suing McDonald's because they're getting fat? What kind of idiots are they?
I know that I'm fed up with these people who can't last 10 minutes before they are offended by something.

I agree Joe. This sueing this is getting out of hand. And yes the people sueing McDonalds are idiots. I mean hello! They are the ones buying this stuff and I'm guessing they don't work out! Sueing isn't gonna get them any thinner (unless they get liposuction [sp])

The cultural thing too. I guess it's some things in some cultures that are not alowed in others. For example a culture in Africa scrifice a chiken and beat up a dog with a stick until they kill it and the eat the dog. That moght not be acceptable to many cultures or people but that's a part of them.

Some people just can't see that.

I don't care about the damn Mcdonald's thing. I want to talk about the conferdate flag. Whether it represents slavery or not, it is the PAST. I know it may be hard, but you should LET IT GO. You had freedom for a few years, you fought against your own country and lost. The union even helped you build back up. Then what did you do. African Americans did not have equal right until a few centuries ago. Guess where? Yes in the south... where is the KKK from? weird the South.
The North didn't need slavery during and before the civil war because they didnt have any plantations and they weren't lazy. What were you fighting for that you believed in so much? To me, every time I see a confederate flag, I am disgusted. It reminds me of slavery and how African Americans were treated. They are still discriminated against, and were up until a few centuries back. As much as I try to understand how the flag represents you or your history, I do not understand it that well. It represents everything about the south during the civil war, when all those states seceded from the Union. Why did they secede? Mainly because of slavery.
What other reasons did you have? Accept the fact that these events were a long time ago, and you should forget about it and support the Stars and Stripes for a change.

just cuz they have the confed flag up doesn't mean they don't support the 'stars and stripes'

Then what is the reason for the Confederate flag? In the North we don't have any flag that we have because we became independent and supported slavery once. Oh yea we won that war, so we have our normal flag. What is so damn special about the Confederate flag?

It's still a part of America's history... Denial of history means forgetting your roots and getting lost when the winds pick up and the sands of time become a sandstorm eroding everything in its path

that's not what they mean...it means auschwitz and bergen-belson should be left standing as a reminder to future generations that the ends do not always justify the means, especially if the ends aren't too grand either.

They had african people running around gathering up other africans to bind them together in chains. Im sorry to say this but I am so sick and tired of black people or people of any race getting all upset because of the slavery shit....okay well excuse me but who fought for you to get you out ? The WHITE people we are NOT all bad.....grrrrrr.......I can't go on cuz this will just piss me off.....

I think the slavery issue is important to black people not only because of their history, but because they are still being treated with inferiority today. As recently as 50 years ago they were treated as subhuman citizens. I in no way take back a black person's right to feel rage at they way they have been treated throughout history.

I am opposed to the confederate flag flying on state monuments for two reasons.
1.) This is America...one country...one flag. There is no need or use in flying a flag that symbolises a time when America was divided. We need to be a strong nation and stand as one, not North and South. Of course we should never forget our history, but flying the confederate flag on state buildings is not the way to make us remember.

2.) Whether you want to believe it or not, the confederate flag represents the ideals of the south. Up until recently (and even today with some people), the ideals of the south were not supportive of black people. Why on earth would any state want to in any way send that message anymore?

I don't care if individual people flash the confederate flag, but the state should not. That is my opinion

Of course there is that Krista. I agree with a lot of you that political correctness is at times taken to extremes here in the U.S. However, you can't deny that in a subtle way (and sometimes in a not so subtle way), black people are still being treated unfairly. You can't deny a person their right to feel outrage at the way they, members of their family, and their ancestors have been treated.

Yea Lizz thats true, but white people were slaves too...but you dont see us running around bitching about it? I am so freaking tired of this country bending over backwards for other races but when white people want something we can't have but if an east indian or black person or some other race wants it we give it to them in a heart beat because that race will sue for racism in a heart beat which is not going on at all. I had this discussion with my mom last night and it just pisses me off because we're a free country but it seems to me that its becoming a free country for everyone except the white people. And one more thing. Im tired of black people and hispanics, and other races running around saying that white people get everything in life and its our fault they don't have anything> okay yea they grew up in a ghetto and their parents did drugs but that doesnt mean that they have to they can change their lives and in no way what so ever is it another races fault that they didnt go to school and stuff. And another thing that pisses me off is that there are so many college scholarships for people of other races besides white because they have to have a certain amount of "minorities" in their college. Well it seems to me that the white people are becoming the minority these days. And one last thing, do you ever notice how when you fill out an application it says Ethniticy: African-American, Hispanic, Asian, and then it just simply says WHITE, we are not just WHITE yea thats the color of our skin but we are a race as well as the rest of the world is.

I am in no way whatever racist, but Im just angry of everytime I turn around I see white people getting persecuted for doing something and then seeing another race doing it and getting away with it....And I don't mean that whole race is doing it....but a lot of times the people of that race who aren't doing it don't stand up and if they did maybe things wouldnt be as they are.

There is nothing any of us can do to change the fact that we as a country had black people as slaves and treated them as inferior creatures up until very recently. You can get upset about it all you want, but it doesn't change the fact that this happened and black people as a result can be upset about it all they want. It's their right, we can't take that away from them.

I agree with you about a lot of things though Krista. I am so totally against Affirmative Action. I don't believe that being a minority should give you special privelages. Being a minority doesn't make you stupider than white people, it doesn't make you poorer than white people, and it doesn't make you any more deserving of anything than white people. I believe in treating everyone fairly. I am white, but my family was dirt poor growing up. Financially things were tough, but I am still as smart as any rich white girl, black girl, mexican girl. I believe the only thing you should give people special treatment about is their financial status, and only to provide financial assistance (without which I would not be going to college).

People should not get special treatment because of their race, but they should be allowed to be upset about what happened to them. And we as a nation should show pride about the way we treated them by displaying the confederate flag on state monuments.

Yea Lizz I know that it is their right, but we shouldn't have to give up something that shows our history. It's not like we still have them as slaves. And they should be thankful that we fought that war to bring them to freedom. Yea they were slaves, but that was like 200 years ago and they should get over it because it wasn't them and we're not currently doing things like that anymore. True there are people out there who are white power and do stupid shit. But they act like everyone who's white is like that. And thats not fair because the white race is being treated unfairly because of that. I don't know I just see so much stuff going on that is against the white race and most of its unfair. We're not going anywhere anymore. It's not fair to see people who hardly ever went to high school get scholarships because of their races, but my brother who graduated with a 4.5 and only a 4.5 because he got a b in english and made it on the deans list his first semster of college at Yuba College and not be able to get a scholarship when he is sooooooo smart. He slept through class and got good grades (this I kid you not) but it's not fair for him to not get a scholarship. He applied for some scholarships like some that were for "Native Americans" and they denied him because hes white okay he's a native American, he was born in this country, correct? Im sorry but stuff like this really makes me mad.

I don't think we are giving up any of our history by not displaying the confederate flag. I just said that we should be displaying it on state and/or national monuments, anywhere else is none of anyone's business.

I don't think most black people today are as outraged as anyone else that we had them as slaves at one point. I think they are upset that up until recently (the 1950's and 60's) and even today, they were treated very substandard. I think I would still be upset today if I knew that my dad was treated like crap because he was black. That would piss me off!
I have to say one thing about what you said that they should be happy we fought to end slavery.
*Just because we fought to end it, doesn't excuse us from doing it in the first place*

Now, yes I am against Affirmative Action, but I don't believe the government should be able to tell private citizens and/or organizations that they can't make scholarships that are only for minorities. It's privataly funded therefore completely fair. Affirmative Action is when colleges give special priority entrance to minority students in order to make their school more blended, even though the minority students that they let enter aren't as qualified as non-minority students. Now that is wrong.
