| People have been whining about things like Confederate symbols on state flags and such. What I want to know is: why? Can't these people realize that this is, whether they like it or not, part of our culture?
Also, our right to sue has gotten way out of hand. How about the people who are suing McDonald's because they're getting fat? What kind of idiots are they?
I know that I'm fed up with these people who can't last 10 minutes before they are offended by something. |

| Pesh, one of the reasons white supremacy groups fly the confederate flag is due to the Confederate Hammerskins. | 0 @ 10-01-2003 08:05 Plantagenet | 12,864 posts
| Can someone explain please what's the deal with the flag???? I really cannot follow this one! | 0 @ 10-01-2003 14:01 xTheHappyLionx | 174 posts
| The flag-thing sounds wickedly wierd to me too!
Now... on this whole retribution thing:
I've recently lived in Cambodia for almost two years. Now I don't know how much you know about the Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot, but they basically comitted genocide. Several million Cambodians died.
One of my dad's colleauges down there, was a young boy when all this happened. He was separated from his parents and sent to a labour-camp. He had no way of knowing where his parents were, or even if they were dead or alive...
Even Cambodians that weren't born when this took place are still affected by it today.
It's so traumatical for almost all cambodians because they never got a retribution. Some of the Khmer Rouge leaders are walking around as free men today!! If they could just get a chance to deal with the past, it would be much less traumatizing.
So what I'm saying is that contribution is very important, even if you weren't alive when it happened. Just getting an apology from the state and maybe a symbolic repayment would help these people get rid of the grudge!

Comment on the "ingnorance argument":
------------------------------------------------------------
That they didn't think of the Indians and black people as humans is NOT a valid argument.
Hitler didn't think of the jews as people.
American soldiers under the Vietnam War were taught to think of the VC's as "gooks", not people...
Hugs,

| Happy Lion, the *ignorance argument* is not meant to make it okay... It's meant to explain why it happened. You can't actually blame them, you really can't. When they saw that blacks and indians were able to learn the English language, from that moment on there is the matter of blame and of evil, but not beforehand.
As for Hitler & the Jews: Hitler díd think of Jews as people, only inferior. Inferior, because of several reasons (like their crooked features and dark hair and skin) but mainly because they had control over most of the German banks at the time. Scape goat-system, René Girard.
The technique to single out one single individual (in this case ethnic group) and blame them for everything, is as old as the bible itself. We all recall Jesus and Barabas...? This is, btw, the main reason why in catholic Europe anti-semitism was so commonly spread. No one ever considered the fact that if the Jews hadn't killed Jesus, he wouldn't have risen from the grave.
As for retribution, I don't know if you know about the way things are done in South Africa. Apartheid has made a lot of people suffer there, but in stead of making people pay, they are trying to heal the country through admittance and forgiveness. It heals in a way that vengeance may never.
Levinas, a jew himself, said that he would rather have heard one nazi soldier admit that what he did was wrong and ask forgiveness, than have all the nazi's brought to justice. According to him, and I agree, people are blocked inside hatred and humiliation and fear, as long as they are not able to forgive. And in order to forgive, the other party (that wronged them) needs to admit that there was something to forgive in the first place.

| You can blame the slave-owners. Even if they did think of black people as 'animals' what they did was terrible. It is should be basic human instinct not to want to cause pain and terror, to abuse, or to rape. Anyone who commits these acts on any kind of living being is to blame for their horrific actions! Pain should no more be purposefully inflicted on dumb animals than it should on people. Would you dream of doing something, like, I don't know... chopping up your cat, just because it isn't human and therefore doesn't count? I know thats a weird example to use, but I'm not sure how to get my point across. What I am trying to say is that you can not excuse these people of blame by arguing their ignorance. It doesn't make any difference.

| I don't agree with slavery, but very few of southern slave-owners were cruel. I've heard accounts of slaves who refused to leave their owners. George Washington had slaves.
The war was not about slavery, it was about the Union. If Lincoln could have saved the Union only by fighting with the slave owners he would have and that has been proven. | 0 @ 10-01-2003 15:51 Masterful_Ally | 15,627 posts
| Oh yeah, I'd just like to add that my last comment was a direct response to people saying the slave-owners were not to blame for the way they treated the slaves. I agree it has nothing to do with all that confederate flag business, I don't know alot about that at all.

| Lucky Bob, what's with the nails and jews again. how did they come in to this. and before people forget, maybe jesus was betrayed by a jew, but he himself was a jew and he was murdered by the romans, i.e. europeans.
I've read about the condederate flag before, and years ago i thought they shouldn't be allowed to wave it and so. but lately i've reached the conclusion that, however painful it is for black people, southerners should have the right to have their own flag. i've always, and will always, thought that slavery (and the destruction of the native americans) were very horibble times and we would all be better off if it had never happened, but people who think that the north fought that war to abolish slavery are wrong. it was a by-product of that war and there were plenty of northerners who had slaves. the aboriginals have to see the australian flag daily and it insults them too. there is still this admiration for captain cook and he brought with him the destruction of the aboriginal's way of life. if southern whites, the regular ones, not the skins, cause i object to that, want to have their own confederate flag, please let them, it means something to them. i myself get really annoyed if i see a flemmish flag, cause i consider myself to be a belgian, but i don't deny anyone's right to wave it. and the weird thing is that my parents consider theselves to be flemish first. Lee was the general of the southern army, he was a good guy and he was loyal to his state. both northerners and southerners still honour him today. he has his own monument on the same grounds as the vietnam memorial (arlington??). the first people to invent a submarine were the southerners, who, with the Hunley, sunk the first ship in history by means of a sub. you can think that is a bad thing, but all our countries have them now. i used to always focus on what the american government did in their wars, but then i started to think and we (our ancestors) all did vicious brutal things. the first americans were europeans. muslims sold the blacks of africa to whites of america. england had a brutal regime in india, ireland, you name it. france did horrible things in, among others, algeria. we all know what the germans did and my ancestors (and plantagenet's and lucky bob's) did horrible things in congo and then they had lumumba killed and installed mobutu, who was also bad. the human race is a violent race and if you ask me taht ain't ever gonna change.
I'm gonna stop now, cause i went on and on and you're all bored to death now and i kinda went off topic again. just one more thing: about the sueing: can anyone of us say that when we buy a hot cup of coffee and we spill it and we get burned and we had the chance to sue mcdonalds for 50 million dollars, we wouldn't do it? of course we would. it might seem absolutely ridiculous to us here in europe, but in some ways it's better then our system, where, when someone gets hurt, they drag it out for twenty years and then get almost nothing. bye, peace & smile, alex

| Hey alex i think Lucky Bob mentioned the jews to explain the scape-goat principle in our culture, explained by the philiosepher René Girard, that the if the 'jews' didn't kill Jesus, he wouldn't have been the Saviour, or something like that. And that Hitler used the Jews as the scapegoats for the social things in Germany in those days, and as an argument he used the 'killing' of jesus. (don't think she meant anything with that!) | 0 @ 11-01-2003 00:39 Crazy_Joe | 3,878 posts
| And Hitler also said that the Aryans were the "master race." What a moron (including all the white supremacists that think the same thing)! Aryans were an ancient group in India! They never even came close to Germany! | 0 @ 11-01-2003 11:27 Plantagenet | 12,864 posts
| Euhm, Crazy Joe, the Aryans were the ppl who came to Europe, so they are founding fathers of all european plls (accept for the slavic plls). So, they did had something to do with Germany! | 0 @ 11-01-2003 15:32 lucky_bob | 1,728 posts
| Alex Alex Alex!!!! * hugs Alex * I actually said something GOOD about the Jews here, in their DEFENSE... it's true though, if they hadn't nailed Jesus to some wooden bars, he wouldn't have been able to prove he was God - we all need prove don't we
Ally, I'd hate to burst your bubble, but rape, murder, slavery, conquest, hatred... are human instincts and human concepts... very few animals have them. I'm sorry, but that's the truth.
As for Hitler being a moron, yeah, duh, but the concept of the Perfectly Pure Race is American, and all genetic engeneering projects that Hitler based his plans on were launched in the USA. | 0 @ 11-01-2003 15:51 alexandra_b | 64 posts
| Plantagenet, thanks for explaining that for me!!! Lucky Bob, i'm so sorry for misunderstanding you. but you know what happened here, yes? i should've read it again, but these days, usually when there's something printed about the jews or israel, it's bad, so i automatically assumed you'd said something bad. and you know how i feel about them, right. but i love you and your sis heeps and that won't change!!! big hug back!!!!
Plant, you were right about the aryans, who were our ancestors, apart from one race: the basks, they are the only original people of europe. bye, peace & smile, alex | 0 @ 11-01-2003 17:05 Plantagenet | 12,864 posts
| Yeah! God, I knew that (how could I forget that!) Thanks alex! (love you too!!) | 0 @ 11-01-2003 17:10 Masterful_Ally | 15,627 posts
| I wasn't saying that animals themselves had those concepts, I was pointing out that they also feel pain, and people have always been aware of that, so those slave owners were indeed conciosley and purposefully causing pain, whether they regarded the slaves as animals or not.
