| People have been whining about things like Confederate symbols on state flags and such. What I want to know is: why? Can't these people realize that this is, whether they like it or not, part of our culture?
Also, our right to sue has gotten way out of hand. How about the people who are suing McDonald's because they're getting fat? What kind of idiots are they?
I know that I'm fed up with these people who can't last 10 minutes before they are offended by something. |

| yeah i agree with you...political correctness has gone WAY TOO FAR. I'm sorry, maybe I just don't understand, but slavery happened a long time ago, and it's not like the people who owned slaves were evil mean people. I see the rebel flag as merely a cultural symbol of a time long past! People can hang up other flags.......i don't know... | 0 @ 08-01-2003 01:58 Ilovemarkmiser4 | 2,309 posts
| Honestly, I think it's really dumb to sue McDonalds! Just because you chose to eat their 99 cent heart attacks, doesn't man they were responsible for it. Sure they sell food that will kill you but they didn't force you to eat it now did they? | 0 @ 08-01-2003 02:00 Pandora | 22,882 posts
| and those people that sued coke because their ansestors were slaves and they wanted retribution.. ha.. it's like did you do the work?

| hmmm...i think its kinda like treason to fly a flag of the confederacy, b/c they fought a war against everything that America stood for...thats why they didn't want to be a part of america. They lost the war and so we should not idolize them...thats my two cents. | 0 @ 08-01-2003 16:03 Masterful_Ally | 15,627 posts

| Egg, what's your definition of evil and mean. Slaves were treated like animals. The woman were raped, sometimes while their husbands were forced to watch. They were beaten and would have their toes chopped of if they tried to escape. And thats just the beginning. Check out the movie "Roots" it will give you any idea of what happened in one families life. It's a good movie too.
I have to agree with you about McDonalds though.

| when you say the movie roots do you mean the video for spunges track 'roots'? cos it would be cool if you did
i think political correctness has got a point, i think its rude to go round using gay as an insult and retard and stuff but its not mcdonalds fault u choose to eat their crap, and if you like eating crap then you can find it outside mcdonalds anyway | 0 @ 08-01-2003 19:36 Plantagenet | 12,864 posts
| Ok, I can't realy follow this, about the flag and stuff!
But as a European, I can say that the loyalty of the Amarican ppl to their country and flag is a bit strange to us. We had our big wave of nationalism at the end of the 19eh century until it's highpoint at the beginning of the 20th century and everybody knows where it lead to in WWII. Not that I'm saying that it's the same!! nono!
And about the 'roots'. I just think that european ppl look different towards US' nationalism, cause our nationalism was a ethnical thing, but you don't have like one original ppl (except for the indians of course, but they're almost all gone!), so we don't really know on what bade that nationalism is based.
Well, I'm just speaking out of European stand-point, and I'm certainly not saying that everybody in europe says this! | 0 @ 08-01-2003 19:40 Masterful_Ally | 15,627 posts
| I agree! yey! And I definitely agree with Bootoil30 about the slave-owners. Thats what I wanted to say earlier but I've become aware of exactly how much I give my opinion on this site so I'm trying to shut-up and be non-controversial for a change! lol.

| Well the for the most part.. what I was speaking of was.. as a southern state.. the flag that was flown while so many of my.. and everyone else around here’s ancestors fought for what they believe..
Hold on that’s confusing.. the confederate flag is a part of my history.. and the history of the United States… there is such a epic adventure behind that history.. I wish someone would do a movie on it.. that flag has nothing to do with slaves.. it was our independence from the rest of the world.. because all those people were fighting for what they believe..
Something worth fighting for… if all those people thought that slavery was one of the things out there worth fighting for.. then I think we should be able to be proud of those people.. no matter how wrong people think they were..
that is apart of our heritage.. the people that were here before me.. and I would not want someone to throw away a flag that I shed my blood for.. that flag wasn't only about slavery.. it was about believeing and fighting for your beliefs..
the spirit of dixie will live forever .. whether they take our flag.. whether they take the name... the spirit of those that lived it will be here forever.. and I would trade in all my fancy cars.. all my heavy metal CDS, and fight for the south.. the country girl that I am..
The blacks of today were not slaves.. most of the slaves that were sold to the US... came from black people selling their own kind from over seas.
And it has been said.. that the north would have went with Slavery had it been less costly .. and they knew that they could have gotten by with it..
There is no retribution for what is lost.. all you can do is go for another day.. but people (mostly blacks) can't see that they deserve nothing for what their great great grandparents went through.. because they did not experience it.. they weren't even thought about.. it is the past.. a past they weren't apart of..
I really don't want to get into a big fight about all this.. but that's what I believe.. and will forever

| Although slavery is a morally perverse thing, a Confederate flag has really nothing to do with it. There were several such flags, but the most protested is the "Stars and Bars," or Lee's Battle Flag. (A blue X on a red field with stars on the X) If for no other reason, we should respect this flag as a tribute to Lee. He was anti-slavery, and only fought for the South because of his loyalty to his state. He was a brilliant man; he just wasn't willing to betray his home for his country.
Why do we try to obscure the Civil War, but erect monuments to other "embarrassments" like Vietnam? | 0 @ 09-01-2003 09:30 Plantagenet | 12,864 posts
| It's true that the Afro-americans of today have nothing to do with slavery anymoe, directly. But where does the racism toward them come from? because of the reason they came her. A lot of "white" ppl (the WASP for instance) clame it's their country, as if they were the first. True, they were the first to consquer the country from the native americans. And to think it trough, it were the Spanish who discovered america by an Italian! It not about slavery, the racism, it's not about what ppl faught for in the past, cause those indians didn't fight either! I don't want to offend anyone, but you just should not think about history as a legitime argument on your belives, cause the reading of it is never objective and history isn't asways a good thing to hang onto.
Ok, you'll probably wouldn't have understand what I've been trying to tell, sorry! | 0 @ 09-01-2003 15:51 Zenmaster | 1,255 posts
| I agree..I just absolutely flipping agree. I am so incredibly tired of everyone running out to sue anyone and anything because of mental anguish, or because they were fondled as a child by a priest, or they were made fun of...here's a hint: GET OVER IT. All of that is just excuses. Last time I checked, you made your own bed and then you slept in it. Well, I don't actually make mine, but that's the expression anyways. Do I feel bad for anyone who went through a difficult time? Yes. Is it an excuse to get pissed, murder someone, and sue the world because you ate a McRib Deluxe? Umm..no. Now (and I'm sure the venom is coming) I've got wackos talking about how you shouldn't drive an SUV because Jesus wouldn't and because it supports terrorism. Will you just cut me a break, already? I say don't drive an SUV because it's a huge suburban assault vehicle that handles like a tank and forces you to buy like 12 times the gas. But some soccer mom or dad shouldn't be guilted into taking their kids around in a happy electrical car that costs like twice what they make. So in short, I could spend all my time being offended. Do you know how much freaky-looking middle-aged freelance zenmasters get lampooned? It's true. Just go out and do something about it. Stop making excuses and suing people and crying about events you aren't even educated about. Thanks for the time. | 0 @ 09-01-2003 16:22 lucky_bob | 1,728 posts
| let me completely unnecessarily reply (only to upset Flamish Frite further)
first of all (ah no, she starts with a first, that means there's a second and then a final!), I never got the flag thing completely, but symbols are symbols and should stay the way there are, period. no one goes and removes the nails from jesus' hands because it might be insulting the jews...
anyway, second, slavery... Those people were not mean and evil, because they didn't know any better. It took them a long time to become aware of the fact that black people were people as well, just as it took them a long time to realize native Americans were not 'beasts' and had a soul.
There were actually theoretical trials where priests and politicians tried to prove that Indians (native Americans) did or did not have souls (and were or were not children of God, this is: humans) by telling a joke and waiting for the non-Latin speaking Indian to laugh. Which he didn't. So he was a beast.
People simply had different ideas. They took the strange languages of the imported black slaves for monkey sounds, to be crude, and only when black slaves started to speak English properly and showed that they could act and think for themselves, did people start to consider them as fellow-humans.
Yes, it was horrible. But so was mass-murdering native Americans. So was the prosecution of witches. So many things in this world, now, today are horribly wrong. But that is our fate: people are dumb.
Yes, read my lips, I actually said that and I'm included in this: PEOPLE ARE DUMB!
Finally (yes, we reached finally) people who sue MacDonalds are the loving prove of my previous argument. They should all choke in their chicken nuggets.

| Unfortunately, the government that we (or at least some of us) live under has to protect this right to sue. Without it, it abridges freedom of speech. So we pretty much just have to tolerate those who abuse it. But that's not to stop us from making fun of them...because that's freedom of speech too. | 0 @ 10-01-2003 04:29 pesh_is_fresh | 1,053 posts
| I still don't understand how productive flying a flag that goes against American principles is?! If they fought a war against the American Union...they went against the Constitution and everything America stood for. So i don't understand how the flag should be flown in honor. Former Nazi-member families don't fly swastikas because their ancestors died during ww2. I would understand if the flag was purely cultural, but even nowadays white supremacy groups fly the confederacy flag. | 0 @ 10-01-2003 04:30 pesh_is_fresh | 1,053 posts
