*Introductory theme tune*

Riiiiiise like a phoenix.

Rules of the quiz:
- One answer per person (per round)
- Always give the answer you think the fewest amount of people would know
- If two people give the same answer in a short space of time, the first person's answer will be accepted (but the second can answer again)
- When applicable, a player may pick the same subject as another contestant and provide a different answer if they believe the other to be incorrect
- If you play the first round, please check back in case you make it through to Round #2
- Resist cheating (i.e. looking up answers; asking others)

And of course, respect your fellow contestants and have fun!

Round #1 will be posted shortly and will remain open until Monday (or, when applicable, until each answer is taken) to give everyone a chance of replying.

* offtopic :
The records of previous winners and pointless answers can be found here.

ROUND #2 RESULTS

Maybe in a round with more players the two of you would be through, but not today!

Lisa: 27 (JOHN DELOREAN)
Jeff: 26 (JOHN MILTON)

Carl: 7 (JOHN DILLINGER)
Anthony: 2 (JOHN D. ROCKEFELLER)

Sorry, Lisa and Jeff. Your scores aren't bad, but not low enough. Congrats, Ant and Carl! Great scores, meaning you're through to another Head-to-Head.

Realised I forgot to fill in the other first round answers. I'll do this one's first. It was actually quite a low-scoring round.

JOHN WAYNE is the film star nicknamed 'The Duke'; he was the highest scorer on 70 points.

JOHN F KENNEDY was the US president during the Cuban Missile Crisis - 38 for him. (I'm sure Jeff knew that one. )

JOHN LOGIE BAIRD scored just one better - 37 points. He was the Scottish pioneer of television.

JOHN KEATS wrote 'Ode on a Grecian Urn'. 11 points for Keatsy.

JOHN DILLINGER was the US gangster betrayed by the 'Woman in Red' (Ana Cumpănaș/Anna Sage); he scored 7 points.

JOHN COLTRANE was the saxophonist; only 4 points for him.

Also 4 points for JOHN CALVIN, the French Protestant reformer.

JOHN STUART MILL was the philosopher who wrote 'A System of Logic' - just 2 points for him.

And a pointless answer! JOHN PERSHING was the US WWI soldier whose name was given to a tank.

(Round #1 answers)

Hopefully most people knew it was ENID BLYTON - very famous for her 'Famous Five' and 'Secret Seven' books, as well as the 'Magic Faraway Tree' and others. She scored a whopping 90 points.

EVELYN WAUGH was the second higher scorer out of those we didn't have from contestants; he scored 45. You might've heard of 'Brideshead Revisited'. I almost wrote "Bridesmaid Revisited", which sounds much more exciting.

NEVIL SHUTE scored 30 points. I know his work 'A Town Like Alice' from my mother talking about it, but not really any others. Apparently he was also an aeronautical engineer and a pilot.

IRIS MURDOCH scored 22 points. She was awarded a Booker Prize for her novel 'The Sea, The Sea'.

IRVINE WELSH, writer of 'Trainspotting' (became a well-known film) scored 18.

DAVID LAWRENCE scored 9 points. He wrote 'Lady Chatterley's Lover' and also a work called 'The Escaped Cock'. Which sadly (and strangely) is about Jesus and the Resurrection.

MILAN KUNDERA scored one better on 8 points. His work includes ' The Unbearable Lightness of Being'.

JEROME SALINGER is his name. Who knew? Just 2 people out of the 100. For future reference, the D in JD stands for David.

And lastly we have another pointless answer - very surprising to me, as I read several of her books when I was younger. MALORIE BLACKMAN. You might know 'Noughts & Crosses', 'Knife Edge', 'Pig-Heart Boy', or others. The latter was actually turned into a TV show years ago, if memory serves correctly.

Haha, well it may be - I'm thinking of retiring the quiz after the next (I like even numbers ). I don't think people's hearts are in it any more, or else they're just too busy. I want it to be a fun addition to the forum, not something that feels obligatory, but we do need the numbers. May as well recognise it's time's probably up.

HEAD-TO-HEAD, PART 1

Congrats again, you two! I'm sure you both know by now that this is a 'best of three' round to determine the winner of the quiz. Your first question concerns...

SPIES AND SPYING

I'm going to show you five clues now to facts about spies and spying, can you give me the most obscure answer?

THE TITLE CHARACTER OF A FILM BY DAVID LEAN WHO WORKED FOR BRITISH INTELLIGENCE DURING WW1

GERMAN 'ENIGMA' MESSAGES WERE DECODED BY 'ULTRA' AT THIS GOVERNMENT ESTABLISHMENT DURING WWII

THE COLD WAR SPY PLAYED BY GARY OLDMAN IN THE 2011 FILM 'TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY'

WHAT THE LETTERS 'CIA' STAND FOR IN THE NAME OF THE US GOVERNMENT ORGANISATION

THE HEADQUARTERS OF MI5 ARE SITUATED ON THIS RIVER

I was occupied with very important task to do which is thankfully done---now others can take over from where I left off.....

* offtopic :
Maybe we can go and do the alternating weeks of "Guess Who" or some other game (I had another new one to introduce at some point and you said you had a new "Madness" too?... that should space out the Pointless! quizzes so they appear at greater intervals which should keep up the interest...

The movie name one I have some ready too.... but was waiting for Carl? or whomever won that last round to post their name---they said they were busy (if it is Carl or someone else) and so I just waited... and waited...

And what about the forced recommendation (?) game/review whatever you call it?

THE COLD WAR SPY PLAYED BY GARY OLDMAN IN THE 2011 FILM 'TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY' George Smiley

Gary Oldman has not made a bad film in my opinion......Lost In Space he was genius as Dr. Smith

on the subject of the quizzes....I love this one Joey! (esp after having my very first win!) ....maybe go back to doing it every other week? there are days that I do not get on here just due to my schedule.....but when I am at my primary job...I'm on here regularly. as for the movie one, forgot about that one Practice. Don't remember if I was the last one....if I miss more than a couple of days on something like that, just go on and proceed without me. I understand and don't want to hole anything up.

Thanks, Carl (and Practice and Lisa). The quizzes are still biweekly, but they often run over into second weeks because people aren't on as much. I thought about making them monthly instead, but then folks would be even more likely to forget when they were?

Carl's gone for GEORGE SMILEY as the spy played by Gary Oldman. A great surname, but what does he score?

So the best answer on the board was the title character of the David Lean film - you'll probably know the name: LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (5 points)

The highest scorer was the THAMES, which of course is the river the MI5 headquarters are on; it scored 85 points.

Aaand the CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY is obviously what CIA stands for; 56 points for that.

HEAD-TO-HEAD, PART 2

All right, Ant, you go first this time. The second question concerns,

EIGHT-LETTER COUNTRIES

I'm going to give you the names of five eight-letter countries, but in anagram form. Can you unscramble them and find the most obscure? Best of luck to you both.
