*Introductory theme tune*

To the eclipse (what eclipses remind me of - one of my all time favourite ads).

Edit: Also to Sarah, whose birthday it is today (Sunday).

Rules of the quiz:
- One answer per person (per round)
- Always give the answer you think the fewest amount of people would know
- If two people give the same answer in a short space of time, the first person's answer will be accepted (but the second can answer again)
- When applicable, a player may pick the same subject as another contestant and provide a different answer if they believe the other to be incorrect
- If you play the first round, please check back in case you make it through to Round #2
- Resist cheating (i.e. looking up answers; asking others)

And of course, respect your fellow contestants and have fun!

Round #1 will be posted shortly and will remain open until Monday (or, when applicable, until each answer is taken) to give everyone a chance of replying.

* offtopic :
The records of previous winners and pointless answers can be found here.

That's what I thought, too.

Thank you, Carl. Nice of you to say, and it's my pleasure. Do you remember which episode you watched?

HEAD-TO-HEAD, PART 1

Congrats again, Joe and Jen. Rhyyyme. You'll now face each other in this first-to-three round. Your first question concerns...

THE HOBBIT

I'm going to give you five clues to facts about 'The Hobbit'. Can you tell me the most obscure answer? Good luck!

NAME OF THE DRAGON WHO CAPTURED THE LONELY MOUNTAIN

NAME OF THE NEW ZEALANDER WHO DIRECTED THE 2012 FILM

MAIN HOBBIT CHARACTER WITH THE LAST NAME BAGGINS

NUMBER OF DWARVES WHO EMBARK ON THE ADVENTURE WITH THE HOBBIT

IT WAS WRITTEN BY THIS BRITISH AUTHOR

Jen's said thirteen for the number of dwarves.

They are all so obvious with the 3 movies that just came out!

I don't think the other two were out when the episode this question was on aired (or at least when the people were asked). So, thirteen for the dwarfs. Is that right? Let's see how far down it takes us if so.

Joe's gone for SMAUG as the dragon name. Needs to be pointless to beat Jen's score... Is it?

I'm gonna say Peter Jackson, JRR Tolkien & Bilbo, lowest to highest scores in that order.

You at least chose the best answers on the board. PETER JACKSON as the director was next on 17 points.

BILBO scored 50 and the book's author, J. R. R. TOLKIEN, scored 53 points.

HEAD-TO-HEAD, PART 2

You're up first, Joe. Got to win this one to stay in it. Your question concerns...

EUROPEAN COUNTRIES

I'm going to give you five three-letter words now, all of which appear in the name of an EU country. Can you tell me what that country is? (For example, "LIT" could be there and the answer would be LITHUANIA; "VIA" for LATVIA, etc.) Best of luck to you both.

NUMBER OF US CENTS IN A DIME - how did it score?

Thanks for the reminder, B. NUMBER OF US CENTS IN A DIME - were you unsure whether it would score low because we're British or high because it could be considered common knowledge? The answer being 10; the score was 48 points.

TOTAL NUMBER OF INDIVIDUAL BLACK AND WHITE SQUARES ON A CHESS BOARD also scored 48 points, and the answer is 64.

NUMBER OF PINTS IN A GALLON is 8; that scored 54 points.

NUMBER OF OUNCES IN A POUND is 16; 57 people knew that one.

And the highest scorer was NUMBER OF CARDS IN A STANDARD PACK OF PLAYING CARDS, NOT INCLUDING THE JOKERS - the answer is 52 and 80 of the 100 knew that.

Yeah...Assuming the other 3 were: Ireland, France & United Kingdom. Did one of those actual score lower? I felt that Joe had picked the best answer available.

^ That's what I meant, sorry - poorly worded.

Well (REPUBLIC OF) IRELAND scored a whopping 96, and FRANCE scored perhaps a surprising 34...but UNITED KINGDOM only scored 7 points. :|

I know that's quite shocking...but no one in the studio got it either *cough* and neither did my household. The only excuse I can come up with is that we're usually told we can't say our own country, so perhaps it wasn't expected. :/

HEAD-TO-HEAD, DECIDER

Here comes your third and final question. It concerns...

LOONEY TUNES CHARACTERS

Not the same as the question we had in one of the earlier quizzes - this time I'm giving you five names of characters, but in anagram form. Can you unscramble them and pick the most obscure? The person who does, wins!
