Dedicated to our three recent birthday girls.

*Introductory theme tune*

Last week saw our pointless answers leader board shook up a bit. Jen is now only one behind B, Sierra's stacking them up, and Practice is shooting up there quite quickly for a newcomer. Jeremy also added his name to it. So let's see what this week's quiz can produce...let's play Pointless!

Rules of the quiz:
- One answer per person (per round)
- Always give the answer you think the fewest amount of people would know
- If two people give the same answer in a short space of time, the first person's answer will be accepted (but the second can answer again)
- When applicable, a player may pick the same subject as another contestant and provide a different answer if they believe the other to be incorrect
- If you play the first round, please check back in case you make it through to Round #2
- Resist cheating (i.e. searching online for answers)

And of course, respect your fellow contestants and have fun!

Round #1 will be posted shortly and will remain open until Monday (or, when applicable, until each answer is taken) to give everyone a chance of replying.

* offtopic :
The records of previous winners and pointless answers can be found here.

HEAD-TO-HEAD, PART 2

Practice, you're up first this time. Your second question concerns...

SHAKESPEAREAN DEATHS

I'm going to give you five clues now to the names of characters who died in the plays of William Shakespeare. I'll also give you their initials. Can you name the most obscure? Good luck to you both.

IS STABBED FIRST BY CASCA AND FINALLY BY BRUTUS (JC)
SHE IS MURDERED BY HER HUSBAND OTHELLO (D)
SHE IS EXECUTED ON EDMUND'S ORDERS (C)
STABBED BY HAMLET WHEN HE IS HIDING BEHIND THE ARRAS (P)
ON FINDING ROMEO DEAD, SHE STABS HERSELF (J)

Ah Shakespeare!
tragedies!!!

I'll grab (going first) SHE IS EXECUTED ON EDMUND'S ORDERS (C) C= Cordelia (from King Lear) in case someone wants to know who before you reveal them....

Eamonn Holmes. Hmm, I swear I've seen him before, but I don't recognize the name. Maybe he looks like someone I do know? Strange.

Great choice, Practice!

Uhm, I am creating my own logic that (excluding the remaining 2 I believe to be the most obvious) since I am more familiar with Hamlet vs. Othello, that perhaps that is the case with the Pointless players! lol. So...I am hoping that even though Desdemona is his (Othello's) wife, she is less recalled than Polonius.

My answer:
SHE IS MURDERED BY HER HUSBAND OTHELLO (D) = Desdemona

Interesting logic there.

Practice has gone with CORDELIA for C - how low will that take us?

Jen has said DESDEMONA was murdered by her husband 'Othello'. Poor Desdemona - but can she score lower than four?

I guess we're more familiar with 'Othello', Jen, because POLONIUS only scored 11 points. At least it wasn't lower than 4, though.

JULIUS CAESAR scored 67 and JULIET scored 91.

HEAD-TO-HEAD, DECIDER

Yep, ha. Best of luck to you both in this third and final question. It concerns...

TYPES OF WORD

I'm going to show you the names of five types of word in English grammar, but I've left out alternate letters. Can you fill in the gaps and give me the most obscure?

C_N_U_C_I_N

_Y_O_Y_

A_T_C_E

_D_E_T_V_

P_O_E_ / N_U_
zjenn4

zjenn4 | 29-01-2015 03:37
_Y_O_Y_ = synonym

I really couldn't decide on which one to go with. I only went with this one because when I looked at all of them, this was the only one that took me a couple looks before I got it.
PracticePractic

PracticePractic | 29-01-2015 08:00
P_O_E_ / N_U_ = PROPER / NOUN

I agree with Jen.... knowing the answers is but one step in Pointless!

Getting the lowest scoring one is the hardest... looking for the most obscure...

So I shut my eyes and pointed to choose one (no, really, took the last one assuming again maybe they didn't have time in 100 seconds to get to it as much??--no other reason to assume that everyone in the audience would not have gotten every ones of these)

That is if they had the usual "proper" {now I got that word stuck in my mind! for the day!} British schooling in English!

Excuses excuses!

Would you believe I got this? I'd have posted earlier if not for this message....

I doubt the order matters, Practice. It might not even be in the same order when the 100 people do it.

I'm just suggesting there might be better things to base your answer on. But if you really can't choose and that logic feels right for you, go with it.

It can! I don't know if the logic about time has any truth to it (I know in my house we don't always work top-down), but, either way, PROPER NOUN scores lower than SYNONYM, making Practice the winner of our 28th quiz.

I won??? oh my!!

Thank You! Joey for a fascinating game..

And many many thanks (bows) to Jen for being a formidable opponent!

To win by just 5 shows how correct and close you were on your logical analysis Jen, (i.e. which one took you longer to figure out the answer to, would have had less of a score).......It was good and logical thinking... it did work... your's also must have had less than the others I'm certain!

Joey will show us the others, right?

A curiosity there.....

(I know in my house we don't always work top-down)

I know we Americans do many things the opposite purposely (part of the "revolution part" of our history) than the British do....(i.e. driving on right/v/left)

But isn't it simpler to do things top down? I was always taught to paint top things first, i.e. ceilings/walls before baseboards/chair rails/moldings etc.. therefore if you drip on something lower, its easier to clean/cover it... same with cleaning and organizing and just about everything else... what, may I ask, do you do bottom-up ?
Joeyy

Joeyy | 29-01-2015 20:28
There's not enough time to stare at each one, working them out from the top down, when you're watching it as a show. You glance at them and say the ones that jump out at you, and then try to get the rest before the contestants do or the co-host reveals them. If you start at the top and get stuck, you risk missing out on giving others that you would know.

Yep, you chose the two lowest-scoring answers, well done.

CONJUNCTION was the third-lowest on 21, ARTICLE scored 29, and ADJECTIVE scored 43 points.

Doesn't support your theory about time, Practice, but at least believing that won you the game.

Good point, I'm not taking the time limit of 100 seconds into account there!

(oh went off looking to see if my memory about right/left driving was true... its NOT, reasons are more complex... will leave it to those who want to google some BBC pages on the subject, for all countries of the world too....)

100 seconds for the 100 people - yeah, same applies to them. We don't get 100 seconds, though.

lol. Well done, Practice! You are funny. I do appreciate the fact that you also type out your thought process.

I am a bit shocked, though. I totally thought that in Mother-of-the-English-Language-Land, more people would have guessed/known proper noun. We don't even call it that here, we just use noun. I thought Article would have been the one to have done better.
