I myself don't keep up with everything. There's just too much to keep track of. But I was Jeff's age when 9/11 happened and you had better believe that nearly all of my classes held discussions on it as new reports came in throughout the day. So, I believe even teenage highschoolers can and should be encouraged to participate in some political discussions, especially those that are relevant to them.

Most probably do, but they don't always realise that it's actually politics that they are discussing. I had a friend who had a lot of opinions about political things, but as soon as you said the word politics she didn't want to discuss it. And that was when we were a bit older.
Captain_Keeta | 05-03-2015 20:47
Politics are disturbing.
PinkFloyd | 05-03-2015 20:51
I have to admit I was somewhat like Jeff at his age. About politics/economics and such anyway. I had opinions but I was always afraid to share them because I felt like I never fully understood the topics either or someone would debate me on something and I would get stuck not knowing something then looking like a dumbass. And even to this day there are some topics I feel strongly about but will never share my opinions in fear of being debated on it.
PinkFloyd | 05-03-2015 20:52
And it could also be because I respect others beliefs and opinions so much I don't want to disrespect them, and don't want it done to me.

I like hearing other peoples' opinions, though. Sometimes, there are concepts and effects that I don't consider because it's not the way I think, and I don't even notice it until someone with a differing point of view brings it to my attention. It's a way to learn. I may not always like it or agree, but there have been many times where I've thought: "wow, I hadn't even thought or considered that until you just mentioned it." I've even changed my stance on something due to someone presenting convincing and valid points. But you can't do that, unless you take enough interest in something to learn enough about it to have a conversation.
But I get you, there are certainly things I don't know enough about yet, and I would certainly not engage someone in a debate about them. In fact, I will shy away from debates unless I feel fairly confident I know what I'm talking about. lol
That is probably true for most people, me thinks. I believe people know more about politics than they think they do, like you mentioned, they just don't know they're discussing politics.

You can lable almost any discussion you have as at least vaguely political, and any conversation can be steered into a political one because politics do affect our daily lives so strongly.
I tune out when people start to steer a conversation, to the point of straight up disengaging especially when its someone who knows I don't get involved in political discussions.
As far as I'm concerned my belifs (political, religious, social, whatever) are my own and I don't feel the need to share them. And I don't particularly care where other people stand on those issues either. If you're just dying to tell me, feel free. But I'm probably not gonna agree or disagree with you, and if you spend more than 10 minutes on any one thing or 20 on the conversation as a whole, I've probably stopped listening all together.

The nostalgia of being in the 6th grade hallway.
pikagirl | 05-03-2015 22:21
little children should learn to stay out of our common room . it has nothing to do with the younger grades . just us yr 12s .
Captain_Keeta | 05-03-2015 23:25
Stereotyping again?
Joeyy | 05-03-2015 23:28
Their common rooms probably have age restrictions applied by the school.
Jen, I ate those in Canada. We have a thinner version here called Polos, which I don't think I could find over there. As for now, I have a bag of Mini Eggs, woop.

Joeyy | 05-03-2015 23:41

Captain_Keeta | 05-03-2015 23:42
That too.
CaptainStabbin | 05-03-2015 23:47
