So my song help thread is long dead at this point and I don't want to bump it. However, I do want to reboot the thread in a new sort of way.

I've mentioned in my previous thread before that when transcribing songs, I came to the realization that if I post my transcription with missing parts, then those missing parts will also sound indecipherable to another listener's ears. However, if I just let them transcribe the whole song themselves, they may hear it perfectly clear. So that is what I'm going to do this time around and see if this works out; I'll be posting links to songs that anyone here can feel free to give a shot at transcribing.

When I began my old thread, several different users were helping me transcribe songs, but by the end of its course, it all came down to solely Joeyy helping me and no one else. I want to see if that can change this time. Of course I can't control whether that can change or not, but I noticed tequizasunrise and kalsonberry were very instrumental in helping myself and others transcribe lyrics before, so hopefully I can recruit them to assist in my endeavors once again. If this thread fails once more, I'll probably try bringing it to another music forum and see how that fares.

Anyways, without further ado, I'll start with these five songs:

Milquetoast & Co. - "Love and Tonic"
Jigsaw - "I've Seen the Film, I've Read the Book"
Strawberry Alarm Clock - "Sea Shell"
Jo Jo Gunne - "I Wanna Love You"
Acid Witch - "Intro" (This track's "lyrics" are spoken-word, and there is literally one word I am unsure about)

And please don't feel unaccomplished if you can't make out every single word, any assistance helps me a lot. Thanks!

ok. the Acid Witch intro:

Who among you believes in witchcraft?
Or for that matter who among you is a witch?
An absurd question? I wonder...
The strange secrets of black magic and sorcery have always been of great curiosity to man
In the Middle Ages he even endangered death by fire
In order to practice the black art
And in America only a few short years ago...

We were burning witches in Salem
We were burning witches in Salem
We were burning witches in Salem
We were burning witches in Salem
We were burning witches in Salem

The truth of the matter is this:
There are witches in today's society
There are witches in today's society
And they and their coven practice and believe in witchcraft and Satan Satan Satan
And they and their coven practice and believe in witchcraft and Satan Satan Satan
Satan Satan Satan
In much the same manner as Christians practice Christianity and believe in Christ
There are witches in today's society
There are witches in today's society
There are witches in today's society
Satan Satan Satan Satan Satan Satan
However, it is not our intention to prove or disprove the evils or effectiveness of witchcraft
That is for you to decide

Thank you! The one word I was having trouble with was "coven". It sounded like "covants" when I listened to it, but seeing as how that means a gathering of witches, that's definitely it.

Milquetoast & Co. - Love and Tonic

Draped over the window like a bird nursing a broken wind
Hoping to fly again
Hoping she'll catch him

Draped over the window like a bird nursing a broken wind
Hoping to fly again
Hoping she'll catch him...off-guard

Don't believe anything
Don't believe anyone
'Cause I've already said it all
And it all sounds the same

Little silhouettes
Dancing on a wall
Always seem to trip
But never seem to fall

On behalf of all the voices in my head
I would like to apologise for everything they said

Don't believe anything
Don't believe anyone
'Cause I've already heard it all
And it all sounds the same

Little silhouettes
Dancing on the wall
Always seem to trip
But never seem to fall

On behalf of all the voices in my head
I would like to apologise for everything they said

Don't believe anything
Don't believe anyone

I'll keep the stolen flower
On the ---- until you get back
Keep it there until every little petal turns black
When it finally wilts away
I'll put another flower in its place

I'll keep the stolen flower
On the ---- until you get back
Keep it there until every little petal turns black
When it finally wilts away
I'll put another flower in the vase

I'll keep the stolen flower
On the ---- until you get back
Keep it there until every little petal turns black
When it finally wilts away
I'll put another flower in its place

I will keep the stolen flower
On the ---- until you get back
Keep it there until every little petal turns black

Little silhouette
Dancing on the wall
Always seems to trip
But never seems to fall

On behalf of all the voices in my head
I would like to apologise for everything they said

Jigsaw - I've Seen The Film, I've Read The Book

See the way the world today
Don't know which way to turn
Hasn't time to listen
Hasn't time to learn

Doesn't know which way to go
And even though the light
Burns a little brighter
We stumble through the night

That's how it is and how it stays
Nothing on Earth can change our ways

I've seen the film, I've read the book
The story's still the same
Step inside and take a look
Nobody is to blame

The script is bad
The girl gets had
The hero makes you cry

I've see the film, I've read the book
Can't change it how much you try (?)

Ooo, la, la, la, la, la
Ooo, la, la, la, la, la

That's the way it is today
Each time you play with me
I'm the lonely hero
After sympathy

From the start, I play the part
My heart gets broke, my friend
I can see it coming
'Cause I know the end

That's how it is and how it stays
Nothing on Earth can change our ways

I've seen the film, I've read the book
The story's still the same
Step inside and take a look
Nobody is to blame

The script is bad
The girl gets had
The hero makes you cry

I've see the film, I've read the book
Can't change it how much you try (?)

Ooo, la, la, la, la, la
Ooo, la, la, la, la, la

I've seen the film, I've read the book
The story's still the same
Step inside and take a look
Nobody is to blame

I've seen the film, I've read the book
The story's still the same
Step inside and take a look
Nobody is to blame

I've seen the film, I've read the book
The story's still the same
Step inside and take a look
Nobody...

I just gave Love and Tonic a look. Not too far from my transcription. I think the word you left out is "sill", perhaps? It sounds like he says that pretty clearly. I know a windowsill is the shelf below a window, and it is extremely common for flowers and plants to be on one (heck, Googling "windowsill" gives me this picture among others with flowers and plants).

Aside from that I think "like a bird nursing a broken wind" is actually "broken wing". And in my transcription, in the same line, I had "draped" as "drift". Nonetheless I think I have enough pieces of this to put together a proper transcription and I'll figure this out.

I'll take a look at the Jigsaw one once I wake up. It's a bit late at the moment.

Oh, yeah, that was (kind of obviously) a typo. I copied and pasted my lines, hence the repetition.

Other than the missing word - which you're probably right about - I think I nailed it. Not really sure why you said it ("Nonetheless I think I have enough pieces of this to put together a proper transcription ") as if I left large chunks out.

No worries. I was referring to the pieces of my transcription vs. your transcription and putting them together. And I just did here - I think we did good.

Just gave the Jigsaw one a look. The majority of the song is very easy to transcribe, but it was that last falsetto line in the chorus I had trouble with. I think you got it right, though, despite the question mark. I watched his mouth movement very closely in the video and it looks like he's saying just that.

Aside from that, the first line is most likely "See the way of the world today". But I think these are ready to be submitted as well. Thanks! Looking forward to the next 2.

Strawberry Alarm Clock - Sea Shell

We first met
At the edge of an ocean
Evening came
Bringing new emotions

In the empty sky, we saw a seagull
Kneeling in the sand, we found a seashell
Hold it to your ear and hear the ocean
Close your eyes, see waves and gentle motion

A souvenir
To last a life time
A memory to somehow sooth the sad times
When I'm alone

Even now
I can hear her and her laughter
Summer's come
And yet I remember

We sat beside a fire and built a castle
But now all that remains is just a seashell
Hold it to your ear and hear the ocean
Close your eyes, see waves and gentle motion

A souvenir
To last a life time
A memory to somehow sooth the sad times
When I'm alone

Late night
When I'm thinking of her
How I wish
That I never loved her

A boy in California must be careful
Or he will find himself alone with just a seashell
Hold it to your ear and hear the ocean
Close your eyes, see waves and gentle motion

A souvenir
To last a life time
A memory to somehow sooth the sad times
When I'm alone

Given the subject, it's possible it's "sea waves" rather than "see waves", but I went with the latter due to the "Close your eyes" line beforehand. Your choice.

Thanks I think I'll go with "see waves" for that part, actually, since that's what I had it as.

The only two lines I hear something different for are "I can hear her and her laughter" and "summer's come". For the first, it might just be "I can hear her laughter", with extended enunciation on "hear". For the second, I'm pretty sure it's "summer's gone". Also, "late night" sounds like "late at night" to me. Aside from these it all looks good.

Oops. It's definitely "Late at night", I just didn't type the "at", ha.

No problem. Just submitted it.

Also, just a warning - the Jo Jo Gunne song that's left is quite hard to decipher at parts due to how rapid the singing is, so don't worry if a lot of it is missing. Their lyrics are very hard to come by on the Internet, actually, as a few of their albums don't have any lyrics whatsoever online. And I've checked eBay and everywhere I could and they don't seem to have lyrics booklets in the LPs. Anyhow, after you (or someone else) give that one a go I'll post a new batch of songs. I might post 3 to 5 songs in the next one, we'll see.

Indeed. I had a little listen earlier and I doubt I can contribute any words or lines you don't have, but I'll post something anyway.

ok. had a spare moment so I took a stab at the Jo Jo Gunne. I know a lot of it is probably wrong - need to clean my ears or get better speakers LOL...

I've been doing the South just west of the Mississippi
Radio busted and we've run out of things to say
Interstate three - it's midnight in Corpus Christi
Hand on the wheel but now the mind's going the other way
Come on in, baby, ain't no sin, baby
Make a friend you know the night's just as hot as day
You miss out, mama, what's about, mama
Let it down and get the good times on the way

I wanna love you - loaded on your rock and roll
I wanna love you - watching out and it hits the floor
I wanna love you - crazy rhythm went in my brain
I wanna love you - I'm judging that you feel the same

Got the blues in my toes, got the ocean smell in my nose
Hot broke bruises soaking all of my clothes
Now this ain't no whore - hear that sound coming through that door
Rock and roll reeks but now I'm talking to just a little bit more
Come on in, baby, wear your fins, baby
Ain't no sin you know that water is as hot as day
You miss out, mama, I'm about, mama
Let it down and get the good times on the way

I wanna love you - loaded on your rock and roll
I wanna love you - shake that bat till you can't do more
I wanna love you - jump back baby get on side by side
I wanna love you - get on down and straight your tie

Awww I feel it comin' on....

MCSMeister | 15-01-2015 18:19
Ah yes, there's quite a bit that I heard differently:

- First line: "Hot damn, doing the South just west of the Mississippi", but yours is probably right
- "You miss out, mama, what's about, mama", I had "Moon is out, mama, love's about, mama"
- "Loaded on your rock and roll" sounds like something completely different, but Ferguson trips over it so fast it's hard to tell in the first place
- In the last chorus, I'm positive "shake that bat" is "shake that fat", as there's a song on their first album called "Shake That Fat", so I'm sure they're referencing that.

Those are the main things I'm noticing, but I'm quite impressed. You gave it your best effort and I like that, even if some parts are hazy. If Joeyy wants to post her transcription, I'll let her do that and then I'll post the next batch.

OK, well I also heard "Hot damn" and "...in the south", but I couldn't figure out what came between - therefore it probably is "I've been doing the south".

I got "Moon is out, mama / Love's about, mama", too. I heard it as "Let it down and get the good times underway", instead of "on the way". Then, later, I thought it might be "Moon is out, mama / I'm about, mama / Let it down and get the good times underway".

I was uncertain about the different lines in the chorus. The only one I had in full was, "Jump in, baby, you could feel the same" (where tequiza has, "I'm judging that you feel the same"). I don't have the silence to listen again properly right now. I thought it might be, "Gonna shake that ass (?) until you can't no more", but I wasn't sure about "ass" - it would make sense, but I didn't think I could really hear "ass". Given the other song, maybe it's, "Gonna shake that fat until you can't no more" (or 'til). Then later, "Oh, shake that fat 'til you can't no more".

I think the first line might be "Something, something, rock my soul"? I need to listen again when there's silence.

I heard "Rockin' all week" instead of "Rock and roll reeks".

Oh yeah, I actually heard a few of that too, namely "rockin' all week", "jump in, baby" and "good times underway". I just didn't mention them Seems like our transcriptions were quite close in that case.

I'll go ahead and post the next batch now since that's probably as far as we'll get on the Jo Jo Gunne song. I only have three for this one:

DFX2 - "Maureen"
Jigsaw - "Call Collect"
Elvin Bishop - "Holler and Shout"

It's been a while since I fully listened to this DFX2 song, but back in late 2013 I was able to successfully transcribe their song "Emotion", which has similar Rolling Stones-esque vocals. So hopefully this one won't be too bad for you guys.

ok. this is what I have for Maureen - minus all the slight variations of the chorus at the end...

I come home this morning
Maureen is not around
Lipstick on the mirror said
She's going out of town
Maureen

That girl down the street
Musta had me in a trance
You know I love you baby
Won't you give me one more chance
Maureen

You can't run and hide
You act like a saint
Don't give me no jive
'bout what you ain't

You can't run and hide
Darling don't you see?
I want you back in my arms
Maureen

So I took me a phone call
And guess who's on the line?
Asking for directions
Running outta time
Maureen

I tell ya
That girl down the street
Musta had me in a trance
You know I love you baby
Won't you give me one more chance
Maureen

You can't run and hide
You act like a saint
Don't give me no jive
'bout what you ain't

You can't run and hide
Darling don't you see?
I want you back in my arms
Maureen

I just proofread it - "I took me a phone call" sounds like something else (I hear an "s" sound somewhere in that line) and I think "Running outta time" might be "One more time". Also, one of the "chorus variations" you omitted I can't seem to understand, at 3:43. Aside from that one line I can make out all of the other chorus variations.

Yeah, perhaps it's that or "it's got a hold on me". Considering how the music drowns out the vocals at times throughout the song because of that mad mixing it's hard to discern it, but I think it could be either. What do you think of the other 2 lines I mentioned?
