3 posts	This song is about how at an early age we are programmed by society and culture. John is not celebrating working class heros. He is showing how people are controlled by the programming of culture and society to make them think that being a part of the working class makes them respected heros when in fact they are just being used as pawns.

It's talking bout socity's rules and prejudges and how if you don't fit them you are an oucast("They hate you if you're clever and they despise a fool"); it also shows it's controll over people "When they've tortured and scared you for twenty odd years.Then they expect you to pick a career. When you can't really function you're so full of fear". It also puts it down with lines like "and you think you're so clever, classles, and free. But you're still fuckin' pesents as far as I can see" and "there's room at the top they are telling you still. but, first, you must learn to smile as you kill; if you wan't to be like to folks on the hill."
