Rules:

1) One fact per post

2) No double posts regarding facts

3) One person can comment on a previously posted fact in their own factual post if they wish, but no back and forth conversations (take discussions to Randomness)

4) Keep it relatively brief (no long rants about mathematical equations ;p)

5) "Fact" in the case of this thread does not mean "I just went to the toilet". It means something about general worldly topics (e.g. history, geography, nature, etc.) that is true, but that is random and...doesn't really benefit anyone to know - it's just a bit of pointless knowledge

The hippopotamus is one of the largest quadrupeds and, despite its stocky shape and short legs, it can easily outrun a human. Hippos have been clocked at 30 km/h (19 mph) over short distances.

Wearing headphones for just an hour will increase the bacteria in your ear by 700 times.

I struggle to believe this. It disgusts me to no end.

Robert Louis Stevenson, author of such classics as 'Treasure Island' and 'Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde', "legally" donated his November 13th birthday to a twelve-year-old girl after learning she was un-happy with her birth date: Christmas Day.
