Rules:

1) One fact per post

2) No double posts regarding facts

3) One person can comment on a previously posted fact in their own factual post if they wish, but no back and forth conversations (take discussions to Randomness)

4) Keep it relatively brief (no long rants about mathematical equations ;p)

5) "Fact" in the case of this thread does not mean "I just went to the toilet". It means something about general worldly topics (e.g. history, geography, nature, etc.) that is true, but that is random and...doesn't really benefit anyone to know - it's just a bit of pointless knowledge

The term "tongue tied" actually stems from the medical condition in which the frenulum is too short to allow proper movement of the tongue. Tongue-tie (ankyloglossia) is a condition with unusually short, thick or tight band of tissue (lingual frenulum) tethers the bottom of the tongue's tip to the floor of the mouth.

Androgen insensitivity syndrome is a genetic disorder in which the XY fetus is unresponsive (insensitive) to androgens. Androgens are male hormones, such as testosterone. A baby with androgen insensitivity syndrome is born externally like a normal girl. However, internally they have a short blind-pouch vagina, and no ovaries, fallopian tubes or womb (uterus). The testes are in the inguinal canal or abdomen. http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/186480.php

A Flemish artist is responsible for the world's smallest paintings in history. It is a picture of a miller and his mill, and it was painted onto a grain of corn.

The backward bending "knee" of a flamingo's leg is actually the bird's ankle. The actual knee is very close to the body and is not visible

Jacques Dutronc performed "L'Aventurier" 13 years before Indochine performed a song with the same title. Also, the latter covered the former's "L'Opportuniste" on their debut album, also named L'Aventurier.

Underwater, platypuses scoop up insects and larvae, shellfish, and worms in their bill along with bits of gravel and mud from the bottom. All this material is stored in cheek pouches and, at the surface, mashed for consumption. Platypuses do not have teeth, so the bits of gravel help them to "chew" their meal.

In 1971, Steve Wozniak and Bill Fernandez created a computer from chips rejected by local semiconductor companies. The computer was called the Cream Soda Computer because its creators drank Cragmont cream soda during its construction.

How is that not useless? You won't ever be asked in any kind of competitive exams, ' Why did they name it Cream Soda?'

The first commercially available microcomputer, the Altair 880's name, "Altair" was suggested by the 12-year-old daughter of the publisher of Popular Electronics because it was the destination that evening for the Enterprise, the Star Trek spaceship.

I agree with Saina - the Cream Soda bit is more random.

Anyho, that's not actually true, Jeff, but people did think it for a long time. Bonobo monkeys have sex for pleasure, too.

England doesn't have an official national anthem. Whilst 'God Save the Queen' is the British national anthem, the country on its own is anthem-less.

Additional fact(s): At the Commonwealth Games, which are being held at the moment, the country uses 'Jerusalem' when someone wins a gold medal. The Council for the 2010 Games issued a poll to members of the public, with the options being 'God Save the Queen', 'Jerusalem' and 'Land of Hope and Glory'. Only 12% voted for 'God Save the Queen'.
