| Tabs are a shorthand form of writing music without doing a full musical staff. They're primarily designed for fretted intruments, such as guitars. A tab shows you which frets on each string your fingers should be on to play the chord. | 07-06-2004 05:06 FOBpunk22 | 226 posts
| summerizing what he just say... its the easy way to get out of writing real music, cuz thats hard as crap, and it takes a lot of teaching to understand how to read real music, | 09-06-2004 04:31 music_2000 | 1,125 posts
| Basically there are tabs for any fretted instrument such as a banjo or electric guitar. There are also tabs for harmonica. Or at least I think there are | 15-06-2004 12:35 skitterup | 38 posts

| Readin music isnt that hard!!! I learnt at a young age and now, its really easy. You just need to practice! Besides, once you learn to read for one instrument its much easier to learn for another. | 08-06-2005 14:22 kayleigh_88 | 19 posts
| I know, I've been playin guitar for about 9 yrs - sice I wiz 8 - and I don't think it's that hard to read. I think tab is really good coz it is so much easier to read and work out than the actual note reading - or whatever the technical term is. | 08-06-2005 14:30 _AngelOfDeath_ | 5,872 posts
| Tabs are easier than learning actual music, i am fairly good at reading music (I played violin for 3yrs so i learnt a little more than just "Love me Tender" lol) but id definitely say tabs are easier to use/read.

Ok... so what does the 2 and 3 mean? I guess there the frets... but what fingers do you use?
Usually, tabs won't say which fingers to use, with the exception of fingerpicking and mutliple finger tapping since they are much more complex in terms of coordination. The 2's, 3's, and 0's are, in fact, the frets to play on. Use whatever fingers are most comfortable. It may be smart to utilize the use of all your fingers early on. As you get better at your instrument, you'll be wishing you could put that pinky to use! (In this case, the most practical finger arrangemtn would be 2=pointer finger, 3=middle finger, 0=open)
"Tab" is short for tablature. A bar of Tab is similar to a music staff with a few exceptions. A tab will usually tell you exactly what to play and which techniques to use (hammer on, slide, bend, etc.). Many times people will post a key of what each symbol means. The letters on the left are the strings of the guitar (or other instrument - sometimes drums will be a snare or bass) and tell you what tuning the song is in.
As for piano tabs, the only "tabs" that I've seen are in piano lesson books that show you where to put your fingers. The main difference between sheet music and tabs is that tabs tell you specifically what to play while sheet music is usually less specific and, therefore, easy to transfer between instruments and tunings. Tabs will force you to change tunings or transpose the notes in your head, while it's slightly easier to transpose a song with sheet music assuming you are familiar with the notes of your instrument. One more key advantage to using sheet music is that it tells you the timing of the song while you typically need to listen to the song a few times to figure out the timing with tabs. So, for piano, learning to read sheet music would be better. |
