Well it's getting near that time of year again, a couple weeks away anyway, so here's LSI's annual Eurovision thread.

This year's Eurovision Song Contest is in Malmö, Sweden, and the main dates are:
1st Semi-Final - Tuesday 14th May 2013
2nd Semi-Final - Thursday 16th May 2013
Grand Final - Saturday 18th May 2013

Eurovision.tv - Videos of all this years 39 contestants and the songs they'll be singing.

So, let's have the discussion here .. as always with a bit of a sense of humour

It is mandatory that everyone must clear those days in their diary so they can join in the convo.

Yay

I was thinking (and this is probably explained to me very year...) if we saw the votes from the countries, and what they gave us ended up as the final scores for everyone, where did the judges' votes come into it? :s

The votes that each country presents are a combination of that country's telephone votes and their jury's.

(I don't remember us talking about it before and I wasn't sure myself, but I looked it up.)

Typical Maiken showing up once it's all finished. She did that last year. =p

Jo did answer you the other day, I'll quote her answer, Jeff

Each year, countries of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), most of which are in Europe, come together for Eurovision. Each country submits one song performance to be judged in the final by the public and a jury.

Certain songs get knocked out in the first semi-final and the second semi-final to narrow down the selection for the final. Acts from the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Spain aren't judged in the semi-finals; they're automatically put through to the final because of their financial contributions to the EBU. Apparently Italy are also now automatically selected.

The host city is in whichever country won the previous year's Eurovision.

The public vote by phone; choosing the country whose song they liked the most. We aren't able to vote for our own country, but many people vote for their neighbouring one(s).

If anyone else wants to have a go, I can't think how best to describe the voting system with the 1 - 12 points. But basically the winner is whichever country receives the most points from all of the other countries. (I believe all of the involved countries vote in the final, even if their song didn't qualify.)

Here on LSI we watch it together and discuss the events as they happen.

Denmark won. They were the bookies favourites going in.

Thanks, Lisa.

Denmark won! Not by a landslide, but they won as predicted (by bookies and most people).
