| I have big problem with my laptop. It keeps coming up with a blue screen saying something about an error - the screen doesn't stay up long enough before the computer restarts itself. When it restarts it says a serious error has occured. I have no idea why it's doing this. I've run Norton Anti-Virus and it doesnt come up with any problems. It doesn't seem to be associated with me opening any particular files or programs, it just does it at random.
Any ideas what the matter could be and what I could do to fix it? |

| Are you getting a Windows Protection Error? If so, it means that one of your computer's startup files could be corrupted. You can use your boot disc to restore your computer to an earlier time before the problems started happening | 0 @ 26-03-2004 23:05 ModernDayPrayer | 371 posts

| You should have a startup disc somewhere... I'm assuming someone made one for your laptop. If you start your computer with the startup disc in your floppy drive it will boot off the floppy and give you access to some diagnostic tools you you can find out where the problem is and then correct the problem | 0 @ 26-03-2004 23:12 myangel | 2,616 posts
| Hmm I have no idea I don't think I have anything like that. I have some CD's that came with it. Could one of them do the same thing? | 0 @ 26-03-2004 23:14 andro | 42,248 posts
| One of them might do... If all else fails, you could always try reinstalling Windows | 0 @ 26-03-2004 23:16 myangel | 2,616 posts

| myangel, before you do anything like reformatting your laptop, or reinstalling Windows, you should create back-up files. The blue screen error can be caused by a number of problems. If you could get the error message it boots up, it would be easier to find out what the problem was--and how to solve it. Have you installed anything lately? Sometimes, there's a lack of memory, and you have corrupted programs or files. | 0 @ 26-03-2004 23:25 myangel | 2,616 posts
| How doI find out where these corrupted files/programs are? I wish I could see what the screen says when it comes up but it only stays up for like a second. Unless there is someway of recording what it says I have no idea. | 0 @ 26-03-2004 23:33 ModernDayPrayer | 371 posts

| I've just noticed that some of the files on my computer are coming up written in blue rather than in black. Why is this, and could this be part of the problem? | 0 @ 26-03-2004 23:35 myangel | 2,616 posts
| Nope I haven't installed anything new for ages | 0 @ 26-03-2004 23:48 ModernDayPrayer | 371 posts
| myangel, I don't suppose you're experiencing DLL hell, if you haven't installed anything lately. Most BSoD's are because your DLLs are incompatible versions. But that happens only when you've installed new programs or something. Most likely, you have a corrupted start-up file, so you want to check the memory dump. So, hopefully, I can explain this without confusing you, and me.
1. Click Start button, select Control Panel
2. Double click System, then click the Advanced tab
3. In the Startup and Recovery section, click Settings
4. Click to select/check box the Write an event to the system log
This'll boot up a screen, which you may see your STOP error code. Once you get that, you can go to the Windows website and put that into the search engine, and find out what happened. | 0 @ 26-03-2004 23:51 DaRkSiDe | 21,558 posts

I gotta reformat sometime... | 0 @ 26-03-2004 23:53 myangel | 2,616 posts
| Thank you ModernDayPrayer I will give that a go.
Gavin, how do I do that system restore? | 0 @ 26-03-2004 23:56 DaRkSiDe | 21,558 posts
| I believe it is done by rebooting your computer and hitting the "F5" button constantly until a little menu popups and it lets you choose the different "safe modes", pick any of the safe modes and it will window will run it, then a screen will pop up asking you if you want to do a system recovery and you click ok and then a screen comes up and you pick the date that you want to go back to... hope that helps! | 0 @ 27-03-2004 00:00 DarkAnimeAngel | 676 posts
