Anyone recommend a pop up ad blocker?

| Simply said.
I checked out CNET.com but a lot of the programs have bad stories behind them or not enough reviews. The good stuff seems to cost money but I know good things also come free. I've downloaded some bad stuff in my comp. Dunno how, where, or what but pop up ads come up every time I connect to the net and it's making me upset.

| I've read a lot on Spybot S&D and Adaware and it seems both tend to remve vital OS files and can't be removed or don't do the job.
I'm so lost.
