I'm putting together this short guide after seeing the deplorable show in the "Would You Commit Suicide" thread.

Sit back and listen/read - this won't take me long to outline.

Forums are not a new form of communication, but it is new to many users. The tendency of most people is to dash off quick messages with little thought. Many people regret doing this later on.

The term "Netiquette" has been coined, which encourages common sense, politeness and general rules for online etiquette. The following is a list of general guidelines that should be noted in all forms of online communication. These apply for e-mail, forums, newgroups, and instant messengers to name but a few.

Use appropriate language in the given situation.

Remember that your message is visible to everyone on forums. This permanace can either be helpful or detrimantal. Once you click "Send", that's it.

Proofread and check your spelling before posting.

Avoid typing in capital letters since this shows anger, or shouting. If that's your aim, then this rule does not matter quite so much.

Remember that readers will be without the benefits of tone of voice and facial expressions to help understand what you're trying to say and how you intend it.

When starting new threads, give it an appropriate subject line so people know what the topic is about before they start reading.

Where possible, reply immediately to messages directed to you. This makes a good impression overall. Think clearly about what to write and make sure you know what you're supposed to be talking about.

can i add another? shortening words is ok.. but it gets really pathetic and hard to understand sometimes.. if you don't think everyone will understand, just use the full word...

I fully agree with that. I would also like to elaborate on the point made earlier about people shortening words well here is a question I have wondered for quite some time: Howcome when a person writes a letter, signs a document, does their homework or any other daily activity that requires a pen they almost always use punctuation where needed but when they are online they are more than willing to just leave it out without a care in the world?

Sometimes as a result peoples posts become difficult to read when you don't know which sentence or paragraph is which and their posts become difficult to answer.

I can understand if somene shortens in say a text message because that does cost money but with the net you could easily type a fully punctuated post in MS word. maybe if people were willing to increase their typing speed then they would be able to type a long post without shortened words in the same time it would have previously taken them to type a short message at a slower speed.

Well there is my two cents in. I'm pretty sure people wont take notice of what I said though and sorry if I offended anyone, especially those into just typing a quick non-punctuated post and sorry for saying people should learn to type faster because I know some people can't and I understand that but it does work though.

aaaahm .. i am surprised that a lot of you seem to have discovered netiquette as if it's a new thing

These rules for netiquette are at least 10-15 years old. I am a bit shocked about the fact that not everybody seems to know them!

You should!!
