| Ally has brought up an intresting thing which I think deserves a brand new thread (we must get to the 40.000 threads somehow ) She asked me if I wanted the Mods to stop deleting very old, inactive threads and cleaning up excess threads in categories.
Well, there aren't real rules for mods what to do and what not to do. I think the ppl who are mods know exactly know what to do as mod, because they acted as mod even before they were assigned as mod. And the mods are doing a fantastic job. *applauds*
So what is this thread about? Maybe the mods can tell what they as mod, so that we can discuss it. Like discussing what we do with old threads.
Ok, let me know. |

| I don’t necessarily think the old posts should be deleted, but that the:

could be tidied up a little bit. Unless of course, the amount of posts in the forum uses up bandwidth then I think the older posts should be deleted. Wait… Were only Moderators supposed to post in here?

| Well personally, as a general rule, I delete threads that are duplicates to ones that are more established, threads which are clearly pointless and therefore spam, and on the odd occasion or two when a thread is full of racist remarks made by a new 'member' just to cause up a controversy on the forum.
Maybe because of my age, but I also get nostalgic and attached to some of the old threads.... I was recently looking back and trying to find the thread where I first posted on the forum, back in August 2002. To my disappointment, I can no longer find this, which leads to to assume that this particular thread has been deleted and is now merely memories of Letssingit.com.
For that reason, amongst a few others, I refuse to delete old threads for the sake that they're old.. there must be other factors involved before I click the 'Remove topic' button. | 0 @ 30-01-2004 13:06 Masterful_Ally | 15,627 posts
| Well I was just asking that because like Jez I delete really old unanswered threads, and threads that were posted on the same issue where one didn't get many replies, etc etc.
I was also asking because I recently suggested that to clear up the poetry forum a bit (we were getting about 50 threads on single poems over a span of a few days) users who post a fair amount of poetry make their own '.............'s poetry thread' to put it all in.....which most people have done.
However if you want to get MORE threads on the forum - is cleaning the forum up a bad idea? Should we just stick to editing swearing..? | 0 @ 30-01-2004 13:09 DaRkSiDe | 21,558 posts
| you can we always copy the threads and put them into one, and then delete them, that way we don't lose anything and we save space? | 0 @ 30-01-2004 13:11 Masterful_Ally | 15,627 posts
| (actually Gavin I did do that with a couple of people - its just a user called 'somebody_else' didn't seem to agree with this or tidyin up the poetry forum at all so I thought I'd check with Ray what we should and shouldn't do! Lol) | 0 @ 30-01-2004 13:14 DaRkSiDe | 21,558 posts
| Well you're the mod Ally, you can do what you want Not everyone is going to agree, but if it does us all a favour, I think we should, besides I see the poetry stuff floating all over the place and half the time I enter them thinking that someone is looking for a song lol | 0 @ 30-01-2004 13:16 Masterful_Ally | 15,627 posts
| Just because I'm a Mod doesn't mean I'm gonna just do what I want! I don't want to annoy anyone, lol. Meh.... ah well. I'll just wait and see what Ray says, heh....s'no biggie I was only trying to tidy things up a bit. | 0 @ 30-01-2004 13:19 DaRkSiDe | 21,558 posts
| well we can always do it for the old topics, put them somewhere else, we don't necessarily have to do it with the poetry, but like you said, we'll just wait on Ray on this one | 0 @ 31-01-2004 15:04 Ray | 2,239 posts
| I agree with what Jez said about deleting old threads. A part of the letssingit history has been stored here in the forum achive. You can walk thought time and read what were hot issues by then. It's like reading old papers It would be a shame if that would be lost.
I think of this :
A thread can't be deleted when it's older than 8 weeks. Within these 8 weeks it can be identified as trash, spam, rasism, etc and can be deleted. Once it has a lifetime of 8 weeks it can't be deleted becasue it get the status 'historical protected material'
To avoid getting lost in the archive, I'll update the search and browse functions. So getting lost wouldn't be longer a reason to delete old threads.
What about that? | 0 @ 31-01-2004 16:40 Dekar | 36,123 posts
| Well I do think that a lot of threads are marked as historical nostalgic archives, but there are many that are really of no reading nor memorial value.
I've given this example too many times to count, but here goes again...
-----
Random Person1: hi! What's the name of this song?
Random Person2: It's [insert_song_title].
Random Person 1: Thanks a lot!
Random Person2: Anytime.

That's worthy for removal, I say. About 8000 of them exist. | 0 @ 31-01-2004 23:44 Masterful_Ally | 15,627 posts

| or maybe if they aren't posted in for like, 100 days or something like that | 0 @ 09-02-2004 00:07 QUPNCY | 9,291 posts
| i would say i close/remove the most threads from the "chat" category as there are already many sticky threads for people who are bored & want to meet new people, eg; "randomness is the answer", "i'm bored - someone online?", "do you have yahoo/icq/msn?" & "do you have aim/aol?".
so when i visit the chat category & someone has created a thread with a title or opening post such as; " i'm bored, anyone want to chat?" or "i need to make friends, someone talk to me" i usually close it with an explanation, as well as links to the various threads i mentioned in the above paragraph because i see it as kinda pointless having many threads of the same thing.
i don't close many topics in the "computer/internet" category even if a problem is solved for the reason being that if others are having problems with the same thing that has been assisted with or resolved, they are then able to look up that thread as a future reference for resolution.
i also do not close many threads in the "relation/friendships" category, as i noticed that many threads asking for advice are still ressurrected with new advice or updates weeks after they were created. perhaps i should go with deks suggestion ages ago which was once a thread hasnot been touched for a couple of months or something, it should be removed to save space, (i think it was dek that mentioned that anyway lol).
i do remember closing a couple of threads that were related to sexual issues as at the time, i did not think it belonged here. but i think that introduces the question of, ray, did you want that category to be one of sexual advice issues or just stick to the friendship problems etc. i also think that people may get confused on what the "relation/friendship" category is actually for as i still notice various threads in "general discussion" requesting advice, so perhaps it should be changed to "general advice" as a title?
... i think thats it for now | 0 @ 09-02-2004 00:25 Jez | 12,757 posts
| ^^ ... and that's why she is arguably the best moderator. * offtopic : yes yes... i know i'm biased but looked at her.
