| i used to be one of those people who would say "hell no" but now i've changed my mind. to me, the stupid high school stuff is not a sport, the do nothing that i couldn't do, and i'm not particuarly athletic. our cheerleaders suck, they are so non-coordinated, but they think they're awesome. at practices, which i've watched cuz i was going to become one for a while, they practice for 10 minutes, not very hard and then break and sit around chatting. then 15-20 minutes later they'll do a move or someting and then go back to sitting. they do nothing. they suck. that is not a sport.
however, real cheerleading as in like bring it on type cheerleading, competative i think is the word, that is read stuff. the routines they do are amazing, and there is so much hard work and determination in that. i think that is most definatly a real sport. |

| yeah, competetion cheering is a sport...
marching band (even hs) is also a sport, im in it and we practice more than the cheerleaders..damn cheerleaders | 0 @ 18-01-2004 02:08 Cheater138 | 19,054 posts
| I think it is. Even our cheerleading team works hard and does competions. I'm friends with a few people on the team and they are more motivated than some people on our basketball and wrestling teams. One girl I know cheers for the school and for a competion team outside of school, cheerleading is her life. Most teams do as much work as any other sport so why wouldn't it be one? | 0 @ 18-01-2004 02:12 lbp116 | 2,479 posts
| I think cheerleading is a sport..
and I completely agree that marching band is a sport...I'm in it too!...and it's alot harder than most people think it is...one time a football player at my school said "...all you do is walk around playing stupid horns! how is that hard! anybody can do that!"....Ignorant comments like that make me mad grrr!!

| -hugs you-
a week at bandcamp in the middle of august, from 5:30 to 10:00...and then the football players say its not a sport...ugh | 0 @ 18-01-2004 02:16 Puddle_of_sugar | 3,690 posts
| i agree about the marching band, im not in it but wow, they're always running round the track as like practice or whatever and always practicing and they really do get the crowd up but they dont get the same kind of glory as football players seem to do. its aggrivating. and also that one movie, drumline, wow that really opens your eyes about college marching band. | 0 @ 18-01-2004 02:28 QUPNCY | 9,291 posts
| yeah i think it's a sport.. it's kinda like dancing or gymnastics, in a way lol, the moving around etc so i think maybe yes coz they are considered sports.
you u.s people are lucky lol i'd love to be a cheerleader but we dont really have clubs here. my mate and i were gona try out for the national rugby squad once but it never happened lol. cheerleading chicks are hot. | 0 @ 18-01-2004 02:29 lbp116 | 2,479 posts
| * offtopic : We have band camp for 2 solid weeks in the middle of july(when it's 100 degrees!) from 7:30am to 5pm...not to mention all those after school practices...and during school practices!.
lol,
Last summer most of our football players changed their mind about "band not being hard" after they practiced on the field next to us and watched our Band Director yell...and saw what we actually do during practices...
I used to think cheerleading was not a sport but now I definately know it is. I didn't know that they went to competitions, and I thought all they did was come to football games and yell. But now I realize it's alot more than that...
I realize that most people think the same about band, after talking to a few cheerleaders at my school, they said that they had no idea we went to competitions or anything...

once again it proves that everyone else is right and im wrong | 0 @ 18-01-2004 02:38 XxNirvanaxX | 13,961 posts
| I think of sports as...
Not cheerleading. Sure, you dance around and get excercise, but does dance like ballet count as a sport? I don't think cheerleading counts, but that's just my opinion. I'm probably totally wrong, welcome to my world | 0 @ 18-01-2004 03:07 cairowinters | 3,446 posts
| I don't think the stuff at High School....yelling at football games.....is a sport - no way! But the proper competitions are more of a sport....I'd say those are a sport....like gymnastics | 0 @ 18-01-2004 03:12 I_Am_Da_Shiznit | 5,251 posts
| no. not any of the stuff we have around here anyway. we don't even have cheerleaders at my school. and even if we did, i would rather be playing the sport than prancing around on the side lines. some of the outfits are cute though | 0 @ 18-01-2004 03:12 mannolewen | 730 posts
| cheerleading is a sport. Good high schools even is. There is a lot of stuff that is harder then it looks. You try doing half of it. It's hard. Trust me! | 0 @ 18-01-2004 03:14 DeathByMonkeys | 24,877 posts
| Yes. I used to be a competitive cheerleader with a baton corp and we had to practice one hell of a lot. It paid off though, we won state championship five years running. | 0 @ 18-01-2004 04:52 lilzorrojr | 2 posts
| i don't know if i'd consider cheerleading a sport...a hobby maybe is more the word for it...altough i'm sure some cheerleaders do put a lot of work in it, but i mean high school cheerleadering isn't more than an activity to me..i honestly don't know how someone coud take cheerleading...i'm friends with a lot of cheerleaders and they talked me into going to cheer camp and after three days i couldn't take anymore! | 0 @ 18-01-2004 05:24 Stanley | 13,928 posts
| no, it isnt.... and not becuase ohh its a wussy sport and for girls only and takes no skill and anyone can do it (because those things simply are not true) i dont consider it a sport becuase the outcome is based on judges... same with figure skating, gymnastics, and all that other stuff.... for example, hockey... which ever team scores the most goals wins... its not who scores the prettiest or the most stylish.... in cheerleading/figure skating/whatever else, one person or team can do the same tricks/moves as another team, but the judges may decide in favour of one team over the other for reasons completely unrelated to the activity at hand.... so that is my reasoning for it not being a sport... no doubt it takes extreme physical talent just like everything else... | 0 @ 18-01-2004 05:54 xpierre_fanx | 1,165 posts
| I definitely believe that cheerleading is just like any team sport, not just competition cheerleading. Sure some squads barely do anything at practice, but isnt it like that with ANY type of sport? there are always slackers no matter what. But on my squad (and we're just a middle school squad) we practice several times a week, sometimes in the mornings, for at least an hour, and during Winter Break we took on a full 3 hour practice. Lifting people up takes strength and the stunts take a lot of practice, and the jumps and routines and dances are a hell of a lot of exercise. At basketball games, we usually perform one quarter and one halftime per game, but while the game is playing we also have plenty of sideline cheers and stuff. It's not just my squad; other squads are like this as well. We also tumble and run around and condition a lot, so I would definitely call that exercise. In cheerleading everyone has to work together and if someone is missing then everything is screwed up and everyone has to reconfigure the formations and everything. We all work as a team. I dont know how anybody could call cheerleading a hobby, unless they're talking about the cheering that little kids do in kindergarten that's basically learning jumps and a dinky little dance. If cheerleading isn't a sport, I honestly don't know what is. | 0 @ 18-01-2004 06:04 mannolewen | 730 posts
| Cheerleading takes a large amount of skill. It takes a lot of cordination and strength. Thats like saying it takes no skill to play hockey or basket ball. Cheerleaders have to have perfect timing, we all have to work together. | 0 @ 18-01-2004 07:04 SomeCallMeMaxx | 6,661 posts
| Simply put: Yes.

| Yes.
People say it isn't, and I used to be a gymnast and they say it about gymnastics all the time.
Cheerleading is definitely a sport. It takes lots of talent, strength, co-ordination and agility. | 0 @ 18-01-2004 10:02 vandy | 9,527 posts
| I think for sure that cheerleading is an athletic, active, tough activity, and when competitive, it can be considered a sport. | 0 @ 18-01-2004 10:06 El_Mono_Loco | 24,347 posts
| Honestly, no. Don't get mad now, it's just my opinion. It's athletic to a degree, but so are aerobic exercises, and they are not classified as a sport. It's sorta like dancing, but not really. And 2 girls that I dated recently used to be cheerleaders and both don't know why anymore, they did it in high school, one's 19 and the other 21 and they don't consider it a sport anymore. | 0 @ 18-01-2004 11:44 andro | 42,248 posts
| I think it can be counted as a sport. There wouldn't be cheerleading tournaments if it wasn't... | 0 @ 18-01-2004 11:54 Dekar | 36,123 posts
| Sports are simply supposed to be large-scale games. Cheerleading is a performance. It falls under the entertainment category, not sports.
'course, that's jusy my opinion. I could be wrong. | 0 @ 18-01-2004 12:35 Ifeyinwa | 61 posts

Marching band is not a sport i don't think, it's a band...like any other band.
