| Hmm. I prefer the second load of bands, but The others are kind of distant punk. Like Greenday have adapted from being good & Punk to Pop Cause they wanted publicity.. American Idiot was just.. lets not go there. I think there should be an inbetween like ''Ponk'' Or ''Pup'' that would be the solution to World war III.
--------------
Greenday had 2 decent punk albums in my opinion...than American Idiot...Now they are just a pretty boy pop band | 06-02-2006 07:06 Razzie | 219 posts
| I agree with most of the bands listed!! And with Greenday....well.... i think they WERE punk, but i wouldnt go as far as calling them a pretty little boy band!!
But member theres punk/rock and punk/pop material!!!

| Green Day have always been pop punk (excluding their stuff before their major label debut in 94, cause I haven't heard it, so I can't comment on that).
Before American Idiot they sang about things like being a teenager, weed and masturbation.
American Idiot was technically their most "punk" album ever. Punk is anti-authority, it's rebelling, it's political. And American Idiot was their most poltical album - talking about media (American Idiot), politicians (Holiday) etc.
It's just some kind of amazing luck that American Idiot was so successful. Usually it would be the other way around (political albums first, teenage cheese later to make the money).
So be honest - what you really don't like is the fact that Green Day are now so successful. You just don't like the fact that you like (or used to like) the same band as the 12 year old girl down the road. Who cares what kind of fans a band has. Listen to them because YOU like them, regardless of who else does (or doesn't). | 20-02-2006 06:25 roquegaL | 1,629 posts
| ^^ right out from my brain..hehe
ive listened to green day since im like 10? id loved them then and i still love them now. it doesnt make much difference if they have wider fans base or that they are 'mainstream' now. what matters they are still producing good music. i rarely listen to the radio so the songs will never be overplayed. its all good | 02-03-2006 21:25 grahamcracker21 | 37 posts
| i'd hafta say i dont think armor for sleep or all-american rejects is really that punk. maybe armor for sleep if you arent used to the music or you just started listening, but def not all-american rejects. their sound is way too pop/rock to be "punk" | 02-03-2006 21:27 Cyynical | 104 posts
| I think G.G Allen should be added. | 07-03-2006 19:24 06WhiteG | 3 posts

| ^^ I consider them pop-punk, but that's my opinion.
To steal an idea from the metal thread, we should really divide the main list into sub-groups, as in punk, punk rock, post-punk, etc. | 01-05-2006 22:46 chebelle | 80 posts
| yupp, i agree... punk can be so different from each other... i like punk/rock the best, and.. um pop/punk if that is fall out boy | 16-06-2006 21:24 kennytheshark | 17 posts

| It makes me happy when people can tell the difference between punk and this new pop-eyeliner crap that's supposed to be the new punk. It's just sad when people don't realize the difference. But I guess some of us have just grown up with being told that "Fall Out Boy" is "punk" I don't know who ever thought of that, but compared to real, classic punk...haha no. That's like saying Beyonce is rap. I'm sorry but I am very paticular with matching musicians to music genres. | 06-09-2006 00:59 cairowinters |

| All those bands that the posters above claim are not punk do have a place on the list.
While they may not be "true" punk they're still a form of punk - whether it's punk-rock, pop-punk, or ska (reggae and punk). Let's face it - what IS true punk anyway?
However, please let's not get in to all the different sub-genres of punk. We'd be here for ever trying to define them and then put all the bands into each category. It's hard enough already defining what goes under the broad title of punk, so how the hell would we manage to use sub-genres on top of that!
There is always going to be arguments on what is punk and what is not. What someone defines as punk someone else might think isn't. That doesn't make any of those people right or wrong.
Obviously no one is going to mistake Jesse McCartney as a punk artist, but when it comes to artists closer to punk like AFI and Green Day I don't think there's a right or wrong or a clear definition.
At the end of the day does it really matter what genre a band belongs in? You love (or hate) the music for the music. What genre it is shouldn't contribute to that or affect that. Trying to shove a band into a category is limiting and narrow-minded. Even if you manage to find a definition what happens when the band changes or evolves (as most bands do naturally as the people in them change)? Why do people have such an urge for everything to fit in, have it's place, and it's label?
The point - who cares?! Just let it be! |
