Well, I'm an athiest and I celebrate christmas...I don't celebrate it because of jesus's birth or anything. I just get my friends gifts, and they get me gifts, and that's about it.

Christmas is not JUST Christian christmas. In Latvia, Christmas has been celebrated long before Christianity was ever brought here by the Germans, ok, it was not called "Christmas", but then again, even "Christmas" translates as "Ziemassvetki" in Latvian = "Winter celebration". And before Christianity, it was called "Ziemas saulgriezi" = "Winter sun celebration", i.e. it was the celebration of the winter solstice (sp.) i.e. celebration of the time when days start getting longer and nights shorter, so don't worry about Christianity so much, babe.
*Phew*

Silva brings up a good point...

The original date of Christmas was lost centuries ago. When Christianity moved into Pagan Europe, many of the Christian festivals were deliberately placed on days that were already Pagan holidays so that all the new converts would remember when they were supposed to be celebrating things. Christmas was placed on Yule (december 25th), and to this day many people still refer to the Christmas season as "Yuletide".

hm, but i dont know anyone that celebrates christmas other than because it's christs birthday or because they can, i dont think many people celebrate it because it's the winter solstice thinger ma jigger, christmas as most people see it is about jesus' birthday (shrugs) it's not about the date, it's just the celebration of christ's birthday, kind of like my birthday is in the middle of the week but we celebrate it on a saturday lol

Christmas means what YOU want it to mean, and what traditions YOU make. For each of us it means something different from Christ to Santa Clause, there is always a reason for the season. AND isn't it so WONDERFUL you have the right to CHOOSE what you want Christmas to mean to you and your family? Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all!

"And there were in the same country shepherds, abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them! And they were so afraid."

"And the angel said unto them, 'Fear not! For, behold, I bring you tidings of great joy, which shall be to all my people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David, a Saviour, which is Christ, the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you. Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.'"

"And suddenly, there was with the angel a multitude of the Heavenly Host praising God, and saying, 'Glory to God in the Highest, and on Earth peace, and good will toward men.'"

"That's what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown."

Okay, again this may be contraversial, but alot of u have said it has to do with christ's birth, well i only know 2 people who actually GO to church, of even THINK of jesus at christmas, and also what has an evergreen tree, a fat old man in a red suit, and mistletoe got to do with 'christ'?

I agree with blinkbelle. Christmas is just a reason for shops to sell us stuff we dont need and for us to get presents.

And btw id like to point out that Jesus wasnt actually born on the 25th of december. The date that christmas has been celebrated on has changed many times so therefore it can not be a celebration of his 'birthday' if it is not on his birthday.

i was readin some leaflet we got with our sunday papers and it sed sumthin along the lines of:

'Christmas is for spending quality time with the ones we love, but most importantly, for handing out carefully planned gifts to our nearest and dearest'

and this wasnt some pikey little thing, it was like a mini-catalogue with handcrafted ornaments and stuff in it. tut tut, shame on them..
