Hockey oh good christ hockey; i played watched and breathed it as a kid, still play in fantasy leagues and pick up games anytime i can, i'd love to grab some used equipment and play beer league next summer

that being said, sports is a pretty big part of my life, i honestly try to stay on top of all sports jsut as a general rule, i may not be the biggest fan of sports like basketball, baseball, football, soccer, tennis, golf, or whatever but i have a lot of friends who are into these things and i learn what i can about them in order to have involved discussions about them, seriosuly a discussion about hockey anywhere will pique my interest, as well MMA or any sport it seems

honestly i like sports about as much as i like music

as for sports i played, league wise i played lacrosse, hockey and soccer as a kid, all in defensive positions, as well as a 2 months of high school football, (joined after the soccer season was over, got hurt had to leave the team) still love paying in pick up games of anything now, love playing touch football with my fraternity brothers on weekends, those games are always entertaining, and im deceptively quick for my size

in closing sports are awesome

I used to play handball. I even got to the national team once, but I had a severe injury in my foot during a game and had to stop playing.

I can't practice sports for a long period now, but I still love to watch it. Tennis is really my favourite. I also like football, but the portuguese league needs an update and quickly.

Btw, I suck at volleyball, really. You'd all have a laugh if you saw me playing, I'm a complete DISASTRE!

for the record, since you DID ask...
What kind of effect did sports have on the lives of people here?
A tremendous effect, but basically, due to ONE in general.

Born to a Pop who was very athletic and competed in every NYC marathon(23 total) until he went home at 70,sports were my (escape from)life.
I played Basketball,Baseball, and Football well enough to be selected for
all-star teams in each.Also, enjoying Handball, Bowling,Wrestling, Track&Field,Volleyball,Tennis,Ping Pong,Swimming and Softball,all at a competitive level. I didn't realize it at the time but like I said,looking back,
it was sort of an escape.
Growing up in a 4 bedroom,10 member household,I liked to get away and do my own thing - sports!...

BTW Curt,Happy 21ST Birthday!

...As I was saying,sports.

Though I had talent in a various areas,a single sporting event in 1971 changed my life forever.
Though most here are way too young to remember, the most noted contest was in early March(8th) billed as the "Fight Of The Century" Joe Frazier against Muhammad Ali for the World Heavyweight Championship.
Why did this interest me? As a boy of 9 who's Pop was a former Army champion and sparring partner to a 2time Heavyweight Champ, who trained my 3 older bros and their friends in our garage, and, saw Ali on tv,heard him on the radio and, read about him in the newspaper and magazines, reportedly receiving one million dollars for this bout,I said "THIS is for ME!"

Well, that day I decided I wanted to become the World Heavyweight Champion. The mirage would not depart for 38 years....

Again TBC

my apologies-please excuse the continuation but;it was my LIFE...

Focusing on that one goal,I really didn't care for school.I(in 4th grade) had
decided education didn't matter because AFTER I became a millionaire college would be a lot easier to afford,if I desired to attend.Inevitably,I
wound up "studying" boxing - even in school, before, after, and,DURING class(hiding/camouflaging my magazines inside English,Algebra, etc. books).
Going on from our garage to the town youth center,to the PAL,my skill steadily increased to gaining a position as a member of the USMC team.
After completing my tour of service and receiving an Honorable discharge
I continued on in Savannah, until trying out or "auditioning" for a professional promoter in Miami.Matched against the Florida state champ I did well and was signed to a four year contract.

Anyway, this biography is taking me too long and I need to go to sleep. There's so,SO much more to say but,I think you pretty much have a good idea(right,it's not a pretty picture).

If you read these 3 replys, thank you for caring.
Thank you to Curt for originating the topic, and once again...
Happy Birthday Curt! Oh yeah, and Peter too!

Um, hmm. Well, I played basketball most of my life. I've played softball for several years, volleyball up through high school, swimming for a couple years, track & field for 3 years, I tried tennis, and I was a gymnast for 5 years when I was little. I loved them all. Between playing 3 sports a year, working and all the school clubs I was involved in, it kept me really busy all the time. I think it helped with keeping me on task/time management skills. I love to watch sports too, pretty much any sport apart from golf, which is really hard for me to get into. March madness, superbowl, whether it'd be college or pro, I'll watch it. Ultimate fighter is awesome too. Life would be so boring with out sports to either watch or be involved in.

Hockey for me. I still play in men's leagues, and watch it on television as much as I can. I go to see several junior games each year, and catch an NHL game every now and then.

I used to watch basketball too, but I guess I'm too busy to follow two sports at once. I still watch sportscentre every morning though .

I just looked him up, he's like 11, playing rep hockey for the new mexico ice breakers, won some tourney award in 2006

now when he said junior hockey i assume he meant minor leagues that act as feeder systems to NHL drafts (OHL, WHL, QMJHL, USA HOCKEY etc) but no he actually meant like little kids hockey, i mean in like 4 or 5 years he'll be eligible to move up and play major junior and i think whether or not he's skilled enough to move into the ranks of professional will be proved there

ludman, you're an idiot. Pimping out your 11 year old nephew/butt buddy to a forum of strangers? I've actually played against him and kicked his ass.

As for my contribution to my own topic..

Played baseball all my life until senior year when I got bored with practicing and training.. Still played summer ball that year and we murdered everyone. I was a pretty awesome 3B, I can't think of a better teammate than myself to be honest. Visited state colleges my junior year, decided not to play cause of early morning conditioning and practices and shit like that. Big time commitment... Went to PSU Altoona and tried out for the team for a few weeks, then quit because it was too much time and the team sucked

Played hoops since i was a little kid, played through highschool. Did a lot of dirty work.. Grabbed rebounds, took charges, huge fan favorite, i loved every second of practice and games, probably since we ruled and had the best team in this county's history. Took a basketball break from 8th-10th grade cause practice sucked.

Played tennis senior year of highschool after years of playing at night under the lights with my father and brother down at the tennis courts. Incredibly unfundamental but used my smarts and ahtleticism to go like 23-3 for the year. Set the school individual record, but i was playing at the #4 position for the team's sake, so it was admittedly not that difficult

Love football, never played for my school because we were annually defeated. Seriously, we had years with zero wins. Plus i didn't wanna practice. Recurring theme? If I played, i have no doubt i would have been a top 5 safety in the state. I'm nasty at baiting QBs.

Pretty much I love sports, i'm naturally great at pretty much any sport i attempt to play. i hate practicing, lifting, training, etc... but my brother and I just have ridiculous sports IQs.

Sports are the best thing in my life, i love watching almost all of them except shitty ones like soccer.. I've recently got into hockey, volleyball, and tennis. I can rattle off about any baseball roster or stat. I'm a sports junkie.

Also, I think wrestling sucks along with all female sports.

so are you saying females shouldn't be allowed to ever play sports, or that they just shouldn't have professional leagues?

I am saying that female sports are boring, unimpressive (especially at the non-professional level), and that the only female sport i find remotely worthwhile to watch is professional tennis because the girls are awesome and hott.

well, I actually agree with you. I think they are boring to watch too, for the most part. but, I grew up playing sports and definitely would have been upset were I not allowed to have played them. And I didn't care if people watched or not, I just played 'cause I enjoyed it. I am not saying you or anyone else has to watch and support female athletes and sports, but women still should have the opportunity to do what they enjoy too.

yeah but the quality is lacking in women's sports particularly at the professional level

I guess i know hockey best so its easiest to relate it back to that; There really is no professional womean's league, thus i get to watch Women's hockey when they do national tournaments, usually around the same time that there is either a national Men's tourney or Junior men's tourney (ages 16-19)

the comparison is usually unfair, mostly because in Womens hockey there are only 2 teams to watch for, U.S and Canada, Whereas many European nations like Sweden, Finland, Russia and the Czech republic ice respectable and competitive Men's teams. Also the quality of play differ, in national tournament's there tends to be less physicality, but the men's league retain the element of rough physical play that makes hockey so fun to watch, there is none of that in the Women's tourneys.

I guess it breaks down like this, when they show NBA highlights, its usually spectacular shots, dunks, passes on the rush and dominant defensive plays. The WNBA has none of those things, its more or less a game of fundamentals, and frankly there are high school teams in my area that give more bang for the buck than that.

I guess there's a premium on pro athletes and the entertainment we derive from it, we want to see freaks who dominate the game and really wow and marvel us with their displays of athleticism, and there just aren't enough women who can or will do that to the same extent

I 100% agree with you Ant. I can't stand watching the WNBA, it's nearly painful. I do just because I feel obligated as a woman to watch female sports leagues (occasionally). I was just trying to see where Curt stood. Whether he just feels that women serve no purpose in the world other than to pleasure him sexually, or if by some chance, he feels women should be able to do other things like play sports, albeit professionally or just for fun, as long as he doesn't have to watch.

I just feel very strongly about sports because they have always been a big part of my life, and I would have hated living a life where I couldn't play them. I loved being an athlete, learning to not only better myself but learning to work as a team too. I couldn't care less if people watched me or not, I wasn't doing it for them.

But when it comes to watching sports, I would rather watch college level or professional men's teams/leagues.
