| It's that time of year again (well a few weeks 'till the final anyway), and there's always a topic on here, so i thought i'd start it.
This year's Eurovision Song Contest is in Moscow, Russia. And the main dates are:
1st Semi-Final - Tuesday 12th May 2009
2nd Semi-Final - Thursday 14th May 2009
Grand Final - Saturday 16th May 2009
Eurovision.tv - Videos of all this years 42 contestants and the songs they'll be singing.
So, let's have the discussion here .. as always with a bit of a sense of humour
And here is the link to follow/watch live. |

| Yaaay...but what's this about finals? I thought the UK, along with a few other countries, went straight through to the final?
I hate our song with a passion. Jade's a good singer, good dancer, and they give her this crap that doesn't test her or mean she can show off some funky moves. Boring, soppy song. This isn't a competition to win a place singing on an animated Disney movie. *Sigh* Ah, well. It's not like any of the other countries would vote for us anyway . | 22-04-2009 12:21 TheAnnoyance |

| I watch the UK entry earlier, she's a fairly good singer, but the song she's been given is really sh*t. I see another last place for us lol.
And yeah, some countries get straight through to the final. From the bbc website:
The countries competing in the 1st Semi-Final are Andorra, Armenia, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Finland, F.Y.R. Macedonia, Georgia, Iceland, Israel, Malta, Montenegro, Portugal, Romania, Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey
The countries competing in the 2nd Semi-Final are Albania, Azerbaijan, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Ukraine.
The 'Big 4' countries - France, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom - together with the hosting country (Russia) will go directly to the Final.
United Kingdom, Germany and Spain will broadcast and televote in the 1st Semi-Final. Russia and France will broadcast and televote in the 2nd Semi-Final.
From each of the Semi-Finals 10 songs will qualify to compete in the Final against the 'Big 4' and Russia. | 22-04-2009 12:44 Joeyy |

| Herzegovina?
Ha, with Daniel not around much, and Lina and Bruna practically gone, there's not going to be many people in here. I think Carole said she doesn't watch it *scratches head* but I may be making that up. It'll probably just be us losers (and Lisa ). | 22-04-2009 12:47 Joeyy |

| Psst, then we can b*tch the other countries for not giving us points even if we had the greatest artist in the competition . | 22-04-2009 13:07 TheAnnoyance |

| Yeah, i've never heard of that country either ..
.. its to the right of Italy, acording the google maps lol.
There's not many europeans left are there.. oh well.
I also find it amusing that the "Big 4" countries that get through to the final, France, Germany, Spain and the UK are some of the least likely to actually win. | 22-04-2009 14:22 Joeyy |

| I know, haha.
Listening to Sweden's entry. The woman has a deep voice, eh. Apart from when she...doesn't. I really like the song . | 22-04-2009 14:23 Joeyy |

| So far I've listened to and enjoyed the Swedish, Irish, and French entries. I'll listen to Germany's song, then wait until the actual Final to hear the others.
* offtopic : Do the French have to do the 'chhhhh' sound at the end of some words? Would the words not be part of the French language if they didn't? (I'm not trying to be funny; I really don't know.)
Listening to Germany's now... Doesn't exactly sound German, does it? I think they ran out of words half way through. Catchy, though. And cheerful. | 22-04-2009 15:41 zjenn4 |

| aw, sorry guys. i agree, the UK song was a poor choice. someone needs to pick your country a good song one of these years. or at least something a little more exciting. | 22-04-2009 15:58 Joeyy |

| I know!! I was happy that we finally had a nice singer (her performances in the programmes where you vote showed she has good enough vocals, but they don't even sound that nice on this song) who could dance and everything, and then they had to mess it all up giving her such a dull song. It needs to be catchy, push her voice, involve shaking what her mother gave her .
This country keeps making the same mistakes with the Eurovision entry. They're either horribly cheesy in a cheery way, or in a boring love/inspirational, slooow type way.
Mind you, not many would vote for us even if we put someone like Leona Lewis, or...Muse, haha, as our entry. I wish artists like her had the nerve to try it rather than fearing it'd ruin their reputation.
We should try rock next year. And Andrew Lloyd Webber should not be involved. | 22-04-2009 16:02 zjenn4 |

| ha ha Muse as an entry would be pretty interesting.
and I agree, you have a good singer, they should exploit that fact by choosing a song that would properly showcase her talent.
so far i like Iceland and Macedonia. | 22-04-2009 16:12 Juliet86 |

Aww, I don't count as a loser?
Joey/James, how does the selection for your song/artist work?
Yeah, Bosnia and Herzegovina is one country. And that is all I know about Bosnia and Herzegovina.
I don't listen to the songs ahead of time, that would ruin the fun for me, so I have only heard ours. I think we picked an all right one, it wasn't my favourite, but yeah. | 22-04-2009 16:15 Juliet86 |

| "Yeah, Bosnia and Herzegovina is one country. And that is all I know about Bosnia and Herzegovina."
Made me chuckle.
I don't think we even know. This year, a few months before the Eurovision, a programme came on called 'Britain Needs You'. It was about Andrew Lloyd Webber working with an American song writer to write this song, and choosing our entry out of a load of contestants. Narrowing it down to a certain number who then participated in a live show, however many times, until we chose the winner. By phone votes.
It's not usually made that big a deal of. This year, Andrew Lloyd Webber wanted to make it into this thing that he keeps doing to find a 'star'. They're always like "His reputation is on the line..." Well, this time he's messed up if his reputation really was "on the line". Probably not making a lot of sense, but, yeah. He's done this with a show to find people to star in a 'Grease' play, as well as 'The Sound of Music', and that one with Joseph and his coloured coat thingy. Webber should stick with that. He's too old and too posh for the Eurovision (to basically be deciding for us). Jade, our entry, wasn't even a contestant until the live final. She appeared to come from no where.
Anyway, I think other years we just get to see three artists, or something, and we ring up 'n' choose from those.
Meh, doubt Lina will. Not sure about Bruna. Hopefully Daniel will grace us with his presence .
And, no... I was also counting you as a loser . | 22-04-2009 17:00 Joeyy |

| But you just choose the artist, and the song comes from Andrew Lloyd Webber or whoever? And three, that's not a lot to pick from. | 22-04-2009 17:08 Joeyy |

| More than three this year, but normally, yeah. Think so. Song doesn't usually come from him either. Still, that's basically how it is.
Why? How does yours work? | 22-04-2009 17:18 Juliet86 |

| But where does the song come from then?
We have *counts* 32 to pick from. Songs performed by different artists, sometimes they wrote the song themselves, sometimes it's a professional song-writer (sometimes the same writer has like 5 songs in it the same year). And they're picked through a complicated system with contests spread out over six weeks. (So we get to vote 5692646 times *rolls eyes* They just want to make money.) | 22-04-2009 17:27 Joeyy |

| I don't know. Don't think we're told. But, every year, all contestants have one set song they have to sing if they win (whoever wins). Can't write their own. | 22-04-2009 17:28 Joeyy |

| Hm, maybe each contestant should have their own song. That does sound better. | 22-04-2009 17:40 Juliet86 |

| Here, it's like (well, at least it was) the song is the important thing. Back in the old days, it could be a different artist singing in the eurovision than when it was picked here. And I think they even at one point had the same artist sing all songs, because it was the song that competed, not the artist. Now, people care more about the artist, I guess.
Anyway, I like that anyone can write the song. Makes me think I should write one and send in . (Seriously, it would be cool to try even if it wouldn't get in) | 22-04-2009 17:46 Juliet86 |

| Because I could write one and have someone else sing it, I mean. That can also be the case. | 22-04-2009 18:18 Joeyy |

| Do the writers of the song get recognised? What do you think you would you write one about? |
