| There's alot of artists I REALLY hate. To name a few:
Pink (for her songs: 'Just like a Pill' and 'You make me Sick')
Avril Lavigne (for the song 'Complicated')
Toni Braxton ( for the song 'he wasn't man enough for me')
Paola (for the song 'Fine Without You')
That's just to name a few, but every morning at work for 5 hours straight, I am forced to listen to this music as my boss keeps turning up the radio, and has it set to the station Crave 95.3 (Vancouver BC), which plays nothing but this crap.
The reason I hate these songs and many others is all they seem to be about is breakups, or drama about the guy being abusive or whatever.
Feels like some accusation is being broadcast out against guys, and many people in my city, ignorant and narrow minded as they are seemed to be brainwashed by this music, like they learned something from these pop artists, and they go out and re create the drama and ruin whatever relationships they have with people.
The songs I listed are typically about the guy being bad, and not once have i heard on the radio station a song about things being the other way around (girl being bad) For example: Linkin Park- Don't Stay, Limp Bizkit- Rearranged). any male artists featured on this station are Nickelback or any other which sings about drama as the guy feeling bad (Buckcherry- I'm sorry, Boyz II Men- I'm sorry, Rickey Nelson- Baby I'm Sorry).
So yeah, not only am i forced to listen to all the music I hate, but i'm forced to listen to the messages these songs issue out to listeners.
The basic story I heard in the songs listed above is: the guy was abusive, or not attentive, or not good enough, and so the girl dumps him.
Hearing "You make me sick", "You keep making me ill" "He wasn't good enough for me" "Get out!" "Don't call me baby anymore"
Some songs, the singer sounds pissed or other songs are on a happy tune...
Feels like I am being accused or targeted by the message in these songs which are mostly listened to by girls (high schoolers, young adults, etc). It makes me wonder if they end up absorbing what they hear and either end up unknowingly brainwashed and mentally trained to, or purposely go out and recreate this drama that is portrayed in the music and music videos. Yes, there's alot of bad guys out there, but sometimes I wonder if good relationships end up damaged or destroyed because the girl re-enacts the drama by either saying what the artist said or doing something else.
Yes, I understand lots of male artists made lots of songs about breakups or spousal abuse, etc. and I wonder if some create drama themselves.
Growing up I listened to eminem and dr. dre but somehow i didn't absorb their promotion of violence and i didn't go out hurting people because these artists said so.
My point is this: i am asking if the artists like Pink, Toni Braxton, Paola, Limp Bizkit, and others who have created breakup music, if they really are targeting not only the one person they had a bad time with in their own lives, or if they are issuing the message in their song against evarybody.
Pink's 'Just Like a Pill' ("You keep making me ill"}
or her 'You make me sick'. Are the messages in her songs aimed at all guys? and does Pink's music increase the risk of girlfriends or friends throwing drama against us?
(By 'us' I mean all the guys who aren't abusive or mean to their girlfriends, etc)

| I don't believe they're aimed at anyone in particular unless the artist is, for example, singing about when they were abused by a parent or partner. Why shouldn't they sing about this? Personally not the kind of song I enjoy but it can give others who have been through or who are going through a similar experience inspiration, hope, or just the knowledge that they aren't alone and it isn't their fault (which could make all the difference to how they feel).
I think some artists sing about their own experiences and base it on that or on one person but in a way that their audience might be able to relate to; some just sing about a topic they know will relate to people even if it's not happened to them and other artists sing songs that don't link to anything important and that are just crazy, random fun. (Or crap, depending on who.) | 0 @ 16-05-2008 23:38 Joeyy | 2,959 posts
| And it's not only guys who have girlfriends. I don't feel targeted or threatened or whatever by songs like the ones you mentioned, I understand where they're coming from but I'm not going to take something to heart if it's not directed at me or isn't particularly offensive - which (me thinks) most aren't unless you're extremely sensitive *cough*.
If a relationship is good I doubt a female or male would give it up by imitating negative behaviour from something media-related because they would be happy so why would they? They wouldn't gain anything good from it in that situation. I think instead they're more likely to take comfort in the songs when things are rocky or when they've broken up and are feeling bitter, angry, upset, etc. | 0 @ 17-05-2008 01:08 Wolfman184 | 8 posts
| thanks for the reply. Makes me feel better.

- Good point there, and i'm not going to argue it, i just hope that other artists, who havent been hurt aren't inspiring people to make drama thats all.
Thanks for the comments, I feel a bit better now. I have asperger syndrome- that just means everything means differently to me and growing up i had a really bad habit of taking everything to heart -_- | 0 @ 17-05-2008 01:10 Wolfman184 | 8 posts
