| Well I come from a family of immigrants and for some odd reason we've been focusing a lot on immigration. In a way it's opened my eyes to reality. Most Americans are against immigration. I never thought of it that way, after all at home they never mentioned anything about immigration being wrong.
I want to know peoples honest opinion regarding immigration. What do ou guys think about the whole "Immigartion" topic?
Please be honest. |

| i'm against illegal immigration. i think there are legal ways to make it to this country and rules of that nature should be respected.
but legal immigrants, be they citizens or those with work permits have every right to be here. | 18-04-2008 02:07 indiechick_ |

| I have a hard time feeling like I answer this one intelligently, because I get a little emotional about it.
Let's be honest...most of the time when Americans talk about illegal immigrants, they are talking about ones from Mexico. Whether they originated in Mexico or further south, is up to each individual situation, but really, a majority of them come to the U.S. at least THROUGH Mexico.
The poverty situation is SOOO BAD down there, that I'm pretty sure that if I were trying to provide for a family, and I could at least make enough to get by, by sneaking into the U.S. and finding some under the table stuff, I would do it. I would do it illegally if I had to. No question. Family comes first for me.
In a land where we have so much, I really feel like we have enough to spare. If the rich were taxed more heavily and the poor were taxed less heavily, I don't think these illegal extras who are supposedly leaching the life out of government funds (which I have my serious doubts about) would pull down anyone who couldn't afford to be pulled down a little bit.
Also, I don't know that our economy would stand without illegal immigrants. If an employer knows he's hiring an illegal worker, he doesn't have to pay him minimum wage or provide insurance or any of that stuff. I think without illegal workers, the cost of produce, among other things, would rocket higher. Therefore, I don't think that our government really wants to keep out ALL illegal immigrants, they just want to weed out the strongest, fastest, hardest workers. Those that make it have to run across the desert and swim across the rio grande, you know? | 18-04-2008 13:17 carole |

| heres the newspaper cartoon we've been studying with my students in class. i think it summarizes well the fact that being against immigration in the US is somewhat absurd.. | 18-04-2008 17:53 Arual_92 |

| immigration doesnt bother me at all.. but yeah i dnt think illegal immigration is too gd due to th problems it can cause.
in spain ther r loads of illegal immigrants nd sumtimes theres not mux tht can be done at the moment.. sum live in poverty unfortunately, sum illegal immigrants even get shipped back to their country but sum are fortunate and get jobs and although they perhaps seem poorly payed, for some its great, much better payed than being a doctor in their own country! but spain is big enough to support these illegal immigrants since it's not exactly too populated, the uk is more populated than spain and yet it is smaller. | 21-04-2008 05:16 TheWidow | 634 posts
| Well I guess that we could consider everybody (excluding Native Americans) in this country immigrants. It's just wether they arrive here legally ot ilegally. I dont know. This whole issue gets me frustrated but something has 2 be done about it. | 16-05-2008 09:58 Killmode |

| I'm all for it really.
There was a study on the BBC a while back about Polish migrants in Peterborough (where I live). From what I could see, they work hard, they don't complain and they really contribute to the local economy. Then the show looked at the local unemployed, said that there were plenty of places for English people at the exact same places (the example used here was picking butternut squash in fields - not glamourous, but it was over £7 per hour). What do they say?
"Oh F**k that I'd rather be on the doll mate".
So basically, most of the people in Britain against immigration are ignorant chavs or xenophobes and I have no patience for any of them.
As for Americans...
Every single American that is against immigration is a complete hypocrit, because EVERY SINGLE AMERICAN IS AN IMMIGRANT. Every single one, apart from the precious few native Americans that are left. Only they have got any right to complain. Anyone decesended from European migrants to the "new world" can stfu, because you are descended from a generation who to all intents and purposes invaded another culture and destroyed it. | 16-05-2008 22:05 JDolla |

| the problem is with those who come illegally
if legal immigrants, be they permanent or on work visas, want to work harder for less money they have every right. and people need to stop bitching about that. but those who don't go through the proper means to get here i cannot support.
if you want to come here to work and/or live, go for it. i welcome it. but if you want to come illegally, go to hell. it isnt that hard to get here legally. | 16-08-2008 04:43 xballaholicx |
