| I think 11 is too early to be having sex. I've read in the news about kids as young as 11 and 12 getting pregnant. While that may have been the norm 400 years ago, society has changed and we tend to live longer, so it is better to have kids later. Most people aren't treated like adults at 11, so won't be mature enough, and shouldn't be mature enough. I don't like the pressure there can be to be sexually active at a young age.
Having said that, I wasn't quite 16 my first time. There was a lot of peer pressure, from my friends and other people at school. I don't exactly regret it, although I think that if it hadn't been for my school friends, I would have waited till I was older, 18 or 19. I think it all depends on the individual. My sister doesn't believe in sex before marriage but that is entirely her view, my parents don't mind as long as I am sensible. Most people I know that had sex before the age of 15 regretted it though, so I think the legal age of consent is a good guide. No one should feel pressured into having sex though, by friends or their partner. | 0 @ 01-08-2007 23:09 NightHobbit | 23,464 posts

we may live longer but the dangers of having kids in your 40s and 50s are still there. Having a kid in your 40s or 50s there will be a much higher chance of the kid being born with a mental disorder the most common disorder amongst kids born to women over 40 is downs syndrome, this is due to the quality of the eggs.
Take note that the miracles you see in the media of 70 year old women having perfectly healthy kids is just a miracle. Doctors advise against having kids late in life due to the fact their more likely to have medical problems, heart conditions and being born far too prematurely because the body cant handle it as it would a younger body. And for a kid thats no way to live.
I'm not adivising for people to go have kids too young in life but I am just giving you the other side showing you that kids born to older women arent as perfect as the media tries and makes it out to be.
We live in a rather selfish society today though. Women want careers before kids nowadays and when they come into their late 40s and finally get the chance to have kids it's usually too late. | -1 @ 02-08-2007 04:55 Bucephalus | 1,979 posts
| Thinking too deep on things usually just over-complicates them. But since you brought it up Daniel...I didn't wanna tell anyone...Actually I wanted to keep it a secret. it's kind of embarrasing, but the fact of the matter is that I am a . It's a rough life in the pasture.
Lou, we all know you just wanna have kids right now anyways.
Best time to have kids is late 20s I think....Usually when people ar eoutta shcool and have a job and yada yada yada.

| I totally agree with you Lou. When I was pregnant, Natalie didn't have to have any extra testing due to my age. I want to have all of my kids by the age of thirty. I guess having a career is not as important to me as it is to other people. If I could I would be a stay at home mom.
I would hate to have my first kid in my late twenties or thirties. I will be 40 when Natalie goes off to college. I will still be young and I won't have to chase around little babies at that age. I honestly wouldn't have my life any other way. I'm glad I had Natalie at the age that I did. It forced my to grow up and I'm a far better person than I was before I had her. That being said I also wouldn't want to have had her any younger than I am now, but if I did I would have embraced her all the same. | 0 @ 02-08-2007 10:52 Dagor | 33,246 posts
| plus, a smaller generation gap does benefit a child IMO. I always enjoyed it that my parents are relatively young. | 0 @ 02-08-2007 10:59 PunkRckr8 | 9,388 posts
| Having older parents definitely makes things hard at times

| I agree that having kids later isn't such a good thing. My mum was 38 when I was born and my dad turned 40 the same year I was born. My dad is retiring next year. My parents chose to have kids late and I wouldn't leave it that late personally. I don't think there's a problem with having kids when you're 18 or 19, as long as you can support yourself financially. It is still unhealthy however for a girl to give birth at the age of 11 or 12, both physically and psychologically, even though many teenage mothers cope just fine. | 0 @ 02-08-2007 18:11 ice_white_tiger | 14,470 posts
| I think, as long as people FULLY UNDERSTAND the facts and consequences of sex, and are in a long-term or serious relationship, then they should be able to have sexual intercourse.
I'm not saying it's right at 11 or 12, God no... but I don't see why there's a so-called legal age of 16/18 to have sex when so many kids don't abide by it. It's hardly a law if 90% of the population don't live by it.
I mean, everyone I went to school with, bar maybe about 10 out of the 90-100 students in my year, were having sex before 16. Personally, I think that's really disgraceful, especially when most of them did it because "all their friends were", and a few who weren't even in relationships and freely having sex without even bothering with contraception because they just "didn't think it would happen to them".
What I'm saying is, tons of kids are having sex these days without even knowing what can happen, without even understanding the whole concept of sex, let alone the precautions and followings it could have. They need to know before even thinking about it. I don't know, maybe make a sex licence or something...
* offtopic : What? You wouldn't drive without a licence because you don't know what you're doing and you could get your legs broken!

| I'm glad my parents had merelatively young (24 I think).. but I wouldn't do it the same way. I'm not having kids until I am finanically secure, have a good job, out of school, a lot of college loans are paid off, etc... Gotta make sure you are ready on all levels. | 0 @ 02-08-2007 19:47 vandy | 9,508 posts
| Curt, I agree with you that you should have some of your ducks in a row before planning to have a child, but at the same time, I don't think you should wait for everything to be just perfect...cuz otherwise you will never have a kid. Nobody's perfect, and anyone that's planning to be a parent should also plan for the fact that despite the best of intentions, you're gonna screw up big time once or twice. | 0 @ 02-08-2007 19:54 Bucephalus | 1,979 posts
| I never said about waiting till it's perfect....but it is much easier to raise a child when you have more money and are more secure in your living situation and in your occupation | 0 @ 09-05-2008 15:52 Hoothoot | 4 posts
