^ i'm a teenager and i bloody well think of the consewuences of my actiosn so dont group all teenagers in one group due to a minor few who are irresponsible.

underage idiots+sex= unwanted pregnancies, shitty parenting, financial impairment, physical infection/disease, emotional catastrophes, etc.

=bad idea

considering most kids that are in the system and live care homes and have been abused come from 'normal' middle class families when their parents are in their mid 20s to 40s is a bit of a lack of trust in teenagers.

And as proven already age is not a factor when it comes to parenting. You can still be in your mid 40s and be mentally unable to cope with a child and stil dont want your baby give shitty parenting and be in financial impairment if you live on the streets or involved with drugs. Or are in a shitty marriage when a baby comes around.

just FYI, we have categories, and you should really try using them for your topics... second, please don't make any more threads about someone being hot or whatever, the only thing that's thread worthy is something that will spawn a discussion and not a 'you don't agree because you suck' bash.

and please... just don't make a million threads before you search, because I know there's another thread exactly the same as this... no not all old threads should be reused, but teenage, and preteen sex isn't a great phenomenon, it's been going on for a while.

just jumping in... sure age doesn't matter all the time, but it's more likely that a child raising a child will work out worse than an adult raising a child... in most cases.

Too young?
It's so hard to tell. It depends on the persons. You need to be ready to face the consequences of your actions (or the potential consequence aka a child). I think that when you are old enough to understand that sex is not just something that you do for fun or cause everyone do it, when you understand that it is about love, then you're one step closer to 'being ready'.

You can't really say 'after ... years old', it's ok. But I believe that 12-13 is WAY too young.

Or uh, that's the age you should be if you're going to, not when it's too young. Younger than 18 is definitely too young I think.

I think the answer lies merely on the individuals maturity. If you can take care of yourself and your partner at the age of 15, then fine, if you don't think you can, then you shouldn't be having sex. I could never have imagined myself ready at 15, but some people are raised better than others and taught how to take care of themselves, so by all means.

I don't think it has anything to do with maturity, I stick behind my view of 'don't have sex until you are ready to have a kid.'.... case closed.

no 15 year old wants a kid, much less could actually handle it... so they shouldn't be having sex, and sure some 24 year olds don't need a kid either... haha so it all works out.

"If there's grass on the field, its time to play ball"

hahahaha, that made me laugh

Now, ontopic. Okay, so my views on sex might be obscured by the fact that I actually have done it a few times. I very much agree to what Anthony said. I don't like the whole mystification of sex. It is something fun to do, that's all.

The whole baby and marriage thing connected with it is so last century, and maybe even 19th century, but certainly not extending passed that. The majority of people over history might have not been bothered too much about repressing themselves. I am not saying that you should have sex at very young age (I will come to that in a moment) but repressing yourself at a later age is unnatural .. for me it ranges in the same category as anorexia.

In the past babies were very much wanted, since
a. a lot of them died in early years
b. children were needed to support a household

at the same time children were only accepted if they were born in a safe environment, created by commitments of the parents (marriage). So in the last 2 centuries, society and moral has done a lot to ensure that children were born and within the safety of a marriage. They also have done a lot to prevent that children were born outside this safety, which has been valid. In the past having babies was directly connected to having sex, so no unwanted babies means: no sex.

The desire for a lot of children is no longer there, and contraception has been developped as well, so not having sex in order to avoid having babies (and be "disgraced" by having babies and not be married) is no longer required.

Safe sex should always be practiced. So for the moment having sex and getting unwanted babies is no longer connected at all. At least if you're mature and informed enough about safe sex. (apart from possibly getting babies, there is a number of diseases as well that you can get)
So prerequisite no.1 for having sex: KNOW what you are doing!! (so basically be informed about safe sex!). That already implies that you have reached a certain maturity.

And then there is the emotional aspect. It is a bit of a shame that past generations have put so many curses and tabus on sex, so that we actually still believe that sex is something gigantic. Well, it is not. Nevertheless, because of all these tabus of the past, a lot of young people might still have emotional problems with facing the first time, so here comes prerequisite no.2: Don't do it unless you absolutely FEEL comfy about it! Don't let anyone put pressure on you and don't do it for the first time because your hormones knocked every bit of sense out of you (and yes, those hormones are extremely powerful).

To summarise: there is not really an age limit, as long as you know what you are doing and feel absolutely comfy about it. That is my five cents.

Who am I to tell someone they're too young to have sex. If they feel ready, then really it's not for me to say otherwise. I would just hope that they're mature enough to engage in safe sex and that they were emotionally stable at the time and not pressured into it.

Being a mum, yes I would rather my son wasn't having sex before the legal age of 16 and yes, I would rather he didn't have sex with someone underage also, but if he was in relationship where both parties are happy to go "the extra mile" then I suppose I'd have to live with it.

Although I think the problem with what Sierra said is usually people feel ready, they feel they can handle it, but they can't. There's tons of young people who do it thinking they can deal with it and then it turns out they don't. It's like that with a lot of things, I was just talking with someone about this yesterday.

I do like what Daniel said, and I agree to some extent, that because of the mystification of sex a huge emotional weight is placed in it, but I still think it's a matter that should be dealt with delicately, it's kind of hard to explain without having a long winded post that could end up making no sense, so I have to think about how to say it before I do.

Anything below 16 years old s too young.. But i know plenty of people who started at 15 and they turned out fine. As long as it is safe and all that jazz, everything is fine.

Agreed or be ready for any of the other consequences that comes along with sex such as diseases.

Even though I lost mine at 18, I still wish that I would have waited instead of losing it to an a-hole. I wish Keefe would have been my first.

well, I do make extreme statements, you should know that

Let me explain: from a biological point of view, we have a couple of self-conserving urges: sleeping, drinking, eating, sex (in that order, there might be a couple more). Whereas the first 3 concern yourself, the last one concerns the species. That doesn't mean that the urge is less strong (and it probably is a lot stronger for men, so excuse me if I paint this too much from a male point of view). Sex hormones build up a lot of pressure in the body ... in certain circumstances it even dominates you completely. Nature rewards you for having sex a lot (orgasms release this pressure and other hormones make sure that you feel happy about the whole thing).

So from a biological point of view: repressing the urge to have sex would be the same thing as repressing the urge to eat. Okay, I admit this is extreme, but you'll get the point
