| Add your ideas here...eg...I dont know how to treat other coloured people. They say to treat them like theyre another person your colour, but then that means you would naturally judge them on look etc, and then you get pulled up for racism BUT they say to treat them like theyre the same colour! I dont get it, so I dont like to look at them because Im afraid of judging them and you know the rest, so I never become friends with them ..... |

| racism is a very complicated issue
the problem is dual: people who are in any way different from the norm (coloured, gay, poor, female) will want to be treated equally (as if they were none of these things) BUT they also want to be apreciated for what they are - that's what Black Power, Gay Pride or feminism are about
so in fact, there is no *right* way of dealing with racism
the only thing to do, is treat every human being as an individual person and not as a member of a group | 23-08-2003 12:27 Plantagenet |

| I try my best to treat everyone equally. Because, How I think is: A person is a person no matter what race or gender they happen to be. Where I'm from (here in Alabama) they only races I'm around much are caucasians and hispanics. Some people around here are very racist and I can't stand that...they say that racism is part of where they're from, (Being in the South and all...it's kinda passed down from generation to generation) but I think that's bull crap. To me, it doesn't matter where you're from or how you grew up, you should at least try to treat people equally. I agree with bob, you should treat everyone as an individual instead of as part of a group.

| Judging people by their looks is just as wrong as judging people by the color of their skin.
My advice is to talk to the people you encounter, as though they're human...cuz that's the one thing we've all got in common. Once you start talking to them, the rest will just come naturally. | 24-08-2003 01:40 AZpride | 2,608 posts

| Asking doesn't mean he's racist...It is actually possible that he's just starting to encounter people of a different ethnicity...I know I didn't encounter anyone but caucasions until I was 12, and moved to St. Louis. | 24-08-2003 01:44 andro |

| racist and discrimination are definitely going both ways, like lucky bob says.
i mean, an all-gay public high is discrimination to straights.
and then theyres affirative action. im sorry but i think the best person qualified for the job should get it, whether theyre black white asian hispanic male female tranvestite... | 24-08-2003 08:30 lucky_bob | 1,728 posts
| I agree Lanna, I don't like that sort of 'positive discrimination' either - it creates even more racism
and, to ask the question is not stupid or racist: if it were all that simple, then there would be a simple solution for it
but when you meet a racist, you will judge him or her by that one trait: that is discrimination too...
like I said, in our own little ways, we all discriminate | 24-08-2003 11:17 Plantagenet |

| I agree with Bob: if the question is stupid to ask, it would mean that either you have to deny the problems, or you claim there aren't any problems, now that would be dumb... | 25-08-2003 09:14 whats_goin_down | 319 posts
