| Hi, Ok, As a person who started a Hebrew thread, and saw how much other ppl, who don't know the language, get pissed off because of it, I suggest that we won't speak in any other language except for English on the forum. i saw some other language threads, like French and finnish, and I mus say, when I started the Hebrew thread, I didn't know why ppl hated that thread so much, but now I can see why, it's annoying when someone speaks in other language and you have no idea what they say.
So that's it, tell me what you think... |

| I don't get why you americans think you don't need to learn any new language.. in the scandinavian countrys eveybody speaks at least two languages.. in finnish schools you MUST learn to speak finnish, swedish and english.. But i allso speak german, russia and soon spanish.. I understand it annoys you but try to be a littel bit international.. english is not the only language!!!
oh and by the way i dont mean this personly to anyone just trying to say my opinion..

| um, if you noticed the person who started this thread isn't American. and just because someone's american doesnt mean they're not fluent in another language as well | 0 @ 22-08-2003 15:43 Lanna615 | 614 posts
| um.. nasse... i think shira lives in isreal not the US | 0 @ 22-08-2003 15:44 Shira88 | 12,250 posts
| First of all: I'm Israeli, not American.
Second: I have to learn 2 languages as well in school (English and Arabic) but after I saw how ppl reacted to my Hebrew thread, and how i feel now, when there are many threads in other languages, I think we should all speak English, not to make any other member feel like we're talking about him/her behind his/her back. | 0 @ 22-08-2003 16:01 The_Optimist | 14,654 posts

| I think it's important to be able to speak in more than one language since we live in such a diverse world and you never know what other languages you'll come up against. But on forums, I think it's best to stick to one language so everybody can join in the discussion without others feeling blocked out by the language barrier | 0 @ 22-08-2003 16:06 Shira88 | 12,250 posts
| It's not the point of learning another language, or to use it to say a word you don't know in English... When there are whole threads and conversations in other languages, you have no idea what they're talking about... And that makes you think that mayvbe they're talking about you... | 0 @ 22-08-2003 16:08 WhatIsItToBurn | 7,617 posts
| Shira you have a point, but like andro said, it's a worldwide place, and people are sure to speak different languages | 0 @ 22-08-2003 17:28 Plantagenet | 12,864 posts
| I didn't mind the hebrew at all, i understood as much of it as the spanish one! lol
Oh, and about the language-learing: belgium has 3 official languages, so we're obliged to at least know 2 of them (Dutch & French), some learn teh 3rd as well (German, i did) and we all get English too, plus some people can choose Spanish too (this all in secondary school, so from the age ot 12-18) So that makes that everyone at least knows 3 languages, and some know 5 before being an adult!
Are we good in languages or what! lol | 0 @ 22-08-2003 17:32 Barbiegirl1313 | 729 posts
| It is kinda frustrating seeing threads in other languages, but that's because I want to be able to join in the conversation, but can't.
I don't think that there should be a rule like "Only English", because not everybody speaks English as a first or even a second language. In fact, doesn't Ray, the Forum-God, speak English as a second or third language? We can't force HIM not to be able to use his own language, if that's what he wants to do. | 0 @ 22-08-2003 18:29 Shira88 | 12,250 posts
| I understand what you mean Jamie, English is my second language as well, and there are words that I don't know in English, so when I talk to an Israeli I say that word in Hebrew. But, it is very frustrating, at least to me, that I can't understand what the Spanish or French or Finnish conversations are about, who knows, maybe they're talking bad things about me or my friends? I'm bring paranoide here, I know, but still.. there shouldn't be a rule not to speak in any other language but English, but it would help a lot if ppl wouldn't start threads all in a foreign language.
Plant: you were the only forummer who wasn't frustrated about my Hebrew thread I think, lol. | 0 @ 22-08-2003 18:30 Dekar | 36,104 posts

| Well, I'm American, so learning a second language isn't really forced on me. I used to speak German fluently, but I completely lost it once I went to kindergarten. I know a smidget of Hebrew, from my dad, and I'm learning Spanish. I know how to read and write in Elvish and Celt if that counts. | 0 @ 23-08-2003 04:50 Schatzi | 21,160 posts
| ok ... I don't see why anybody should have any problem with speaking other languages other than they just wanted to join the conversation. Ok and since when did all Americans think they didn't need to learn another language. Yes, I'm sure there are some but I'm sure in other countries there are people who don't think they need to learn another language. I wish I could speak another language ... I'm just slow. | 0 @ 23-08-2003 10:47 Guinness1759 | 5,220 posts
| heh, why don't we start a gibberish thread? where everybody can join in a convo where no1 knows what the hell it means! | 0 @ 23-08-2003 14:29 TheWomanWho | 291 posts
| I think the best one is when you're in a foreign country and the people think you're a dumbarsed Brit who only speaks English, and they ARE actually talking about you and you give them a mouthful back in their own language....... tres fun! |
