| I don't believe there is a spot on the site yet that explains what it means to be a forum moderator. So you are a forum moderator, or thinking about becoming one? What do you have to do?
Topics into right category
Often topics are created in the wrong category. It makes them hard to find when they are located on a place you don't expect them. Move then to the correct category.
Remove double content
Sometimes people hit the submit button multiple times which causes the post or topic to be submitted multipe times. Delete all these double occurences. Sometimes people create the same topic in more categories on purpose. Also delete these double topics and tell the member this is not appreciated and penalialize where needed.
Renice layout
Make sure the topic title and posts are nicely formatted. For example, remove characters that stretch up the page, reduce an overwhelming number of smilies in a post to an acceptable number.
Correct
Correct the mistakes. I'm not talking about minor spelling mistakes in posts, because that would take a 24/7 job to correct. I'm talking about spelling errors in the topic title and incorrect use of the LSI-tags, for example a link to an artist page that is incorrectly used and makes the link fail.
Avoid escalation of problems
Sometimes we deal with members who come to LSI with bad intentions. Correct them on their misbehaviour and give penalties where needed. Act adequately to avoid an escalation of problems.
Support
People can contact you with questions that are forum-related. Help these people out.
That is basically the job |

| The main thing I hate (aside from horrible Ops) is that once you are kicked, you can't save the chat log. I think you should be given a few seconds to copy the chatlog or something after you are kicked.
I don't think modding is really as crucial as it once was. Honestly, who cares if you swear? It's just a few double posts or newbies spamming that probably need the most modding. | 0 @ 05-02-2007 21:48 PinkFloyd | 25,941 posts
| I don't get it. | 0 @ 05-02-2007 21:50 TheAnnoyance | 45,461 posts
| actually curt, although before when you got kicked it auto-forwarded you to the "you have been kicked" page, now when you get kicked, the chat just freezes, and if you try to re-join, it then tells you, you cant get back in agian.
so it does give you time, if you know u've just been kicked, to copy the whole or part of the chat log.
and i dont get dans post either. | 0 @ 05-02-2007 21:53 Dagor | 36,595 posts

| well in my own little crude way, I get his post. haha.
but BACK TO MODERATING.
Swearing.. ugh I duno it's dumb because there was this huge controversy over it.. now it doesn't matter again.
I think if there were alot more everpresent mods, that weren't so burned out on the whole modding deal, things would be alot different. The current regular mods are awesome, but I believe they are just seriously burned out on the whole 'modding deal' .. especially with all the junk they had to take with the cards at first... all they need is a refresher.

| How many mods is Anth going to make? I think we need to get rid of at least half of the one's we have now, they never get on, plus some that I want gone actually disobey the Forum Mod rules, so, if they do it, everyone can do it. | 0 @ 05-02-2007 21:56 TheAnnoyance | 45,461 posts
| dan.
i dont think swearing is a big deal really on the forum.
ray just wants the site to be suitable for all ages i guess.
although half the lyrics in the archive these days probably have curse words in them. | 0 @ 05-02-2007 21:59 Pandora | 23,222 posts

not the point. it used to be that there was to be no swearing, I've gotten carded and so have a million other people for it.. and now it doesn't matter.. so it went from a big deal, to a not big deal.
either becasue the mods got tired of the bickering about it and let it slide, or ray said eff it and let it be.. or it's just a general forum rule that as long as it's not excessive it's okay.
but it's hard to tell one person not to swear, and say another one can.. I think it's still one of those 'in the blue' sort of deals that should be addressed.

| It pisses me off when I see someone get by with cussing, ESPECIALLY mods themselves, which I've seen quite a few times. That's what I got carded for, times change I guess, whatever. | 0 @ 05-02-2007 22:04 TheAnnoyance | 45,461 posts
| well i've been carded for swearing before.
a long time ago now though.
i think mods kinda go by, if they just see someone just generally use the word fuck or something in a post, it seems to be not a big deal.
but if the same words are used, say in an insult towards someone, then they interfere.
a few weeks ago, DannyB said the f word in randomess, and the next post was by Ray, and he just said "mind the language ", didnt edit it or anything.
i wonder if Ray has said swearing isnt a bigger deal anymore. | 0 @ 05-02-2007 22:05 TheAnnoyance | 45,461 posts
| yeah sierra, kinda annoys me in a way that something i got penalised for a while ago is an allowed thing now...mhm. | 0 @ 05-02-2007 22:07 Dagor | 36,595 posts

i much prefer a more laid back forum in the eyes of rules. | 0 @ 05-02-2007 22:11 PinkFloyd | 25,941 posts

the point is that there needs to be a standard like I was saying, it's not uptight to have rules that the members are expected to uphold... its common respect.

| but at the same time, rules are great, lets face it, theyre everywhere you go.. wherever you may be. but if there are gonna be rules, moderators have to abide by them as much as everyone else, or else how can we expect newcomers or anyone else to follow them?
| 0 @ 05-02-2007 23:27 Pandora | 23,222 posts
| and how do you justify him or her saying this or that.. at this time or that time.. ?
when you bend around the rules things just get complicated.

true .. but it's not because of the fact that rules were interpreted in a narrow way that this has to be done for all eternity.
Ray posted a detailed standard about what a mod's job should be. Where's the problem?? | 0 @ 06-02-2007 01:27 Pandora | 23,222 posts
| It's not the job description, it's the rules that the job revolves around... the standard that the mods will hold the members to... that needs to be put out in a defined way, so that it's in stone, and THATS how it happens... not 'this' for some people and 'that' for others.
....and the moderators should follow these rules to the T. If they don't, they shouldn't be a mod. That's one of the problems that we have had before, mod's not being able to do their job. They don't want to card people for doing things that they shouldn't... they don't understand the rules so they don't follow them, or expect other people to follow them.
It's not like they need to be rough rules at all, it's the fact that they need to be mutually understood.

| I stopped carding for cursing because well there were no cards for so long. And I had only started carding so much for cursing because so many people were doing it so often. I still edit cursing but no I don't card for it too much. I really don't like to do so. But as soon as you say you don't card for cursing everyone starts to catch on that they won't get a card & start to take advantage of it. Yeah. Pants & stuff. | 0 @ 06-02-2007 03:47 Bucephalus | 2,843 posts
| I do think some people can get away with things that others can't.
Honestly, a large part of me thinks the older members who have basically kept this forum running all these years with their activity should be allowed to swear. I mean, it's a word. Nobody is actually offended. Just let it go, it doesn't hurt anyone.
When relatively unknown members come here though and spam and swear excessively for no reason, etc....Then I think that's where modding needs to happen. So I don't think anything should be addressed and one solid rule set in place. It's a case by case thing in my opinion. | 0 @ 06-02-2007 03:59 Schatzi | 21,413 posts
| sure most people aren't offended by swearing but that's not the point. The point is it's still a rule. I don't think it always deserves a card. But I do think it does when someone like oh a long time member uses it. A lot. I don't mean just once in a while but like every other post. I just find that rude, honestly & kind of immature. | 0 @ 06-02-2007 08:28 Dagor | 36,595 posts
| Tabby, there haven't been any major problems here since months ... why can't you just unwind a bit. I do like to discuss, but preferentially on the basis of real existing problems. | 0 @ 06-02-2007 09:19 fishmunky | 20,529 posts
| people forget that its hard to punish people you consider friends...but sometimes its gotta be done
people love to rush to the mod job and the power but forget the conflicts of interest and the human problem...its hard to tell someone you consider a friend that you cant come on the site for a week just cause thier love of toilet humour went too far or cause they lost it on some racist or whatever
i mean tough love has to exist, and you cant play favourites as tempting as it is...being a mod can cost you friends on this site...there has to be objectiveness...and you gotta uphold the rules regardless of how much you disagree with something like swearing
you edit, and when you think its called for you hand out a card...its like being a referee in any sport, not everyone is gonna agree with the calls...what's important is if you think you did the right thing at the time and if you followed the guidelines
i hate carding for swearing...its its like a wayward f-bomb that just happened to creep in the message, whatever i edit and i send a pm asking the person to follow the rules closer...if its used to degrade someone or the post is so filled with curse words that if you took them out what was said couldn't be considered a sentence, then a card is justified in my mind
no one should be exept, regardless of time here or whatever...some one like Tabitha has been here for like 5 years...never do i have to look at her posts and think "Man oh man i'm gonna have to clean this up again", cause she follows that rule, its just how it is
in a way a mod is like a cop...held to a higher standard involving the rules cause you know them all and are supposed to enforce them...there's a higher standard and there should be...if your in charge of upholding the rule you better make damn sure you're following them yourself...other wise you end up looking like a hypocritical douche
i dunno just more stuff for people to chew on and my 2 cents regarding some of the subject matter thats popped up since the last time i posted | 0 @ 06-02-2007 10:26 DarXide | 6,154 posts
| Exactly.. friends of mods should understand being kicked. If you can't help swearing constantly, you should probably move to a MSN or something.
But other members, if even of higher authority/experience on LSI, should understand being dealt with (kick, card w/e) when they violate the rules.
Instead of asking for the license to swear just cause you're an old LSI-er, you should, by now, know what kinda effect that'll have on newbies.
Anyway, Ant, as the new forum moderator should probably come up with his own guidelines so everyone would understand better. |
