Yeah, in case no one watches the news, a coup occurred in Thailand during the UN meeting (which their PM attended). The army came into bangkok armed with big fat tanks and took control. Now the country is supposedly undergoing a "government reformation".

In case you're wondering what it's like over here in the good ol' land of smiles right now, it kinda sucks. They took control of the local TV networks and completely blocked off most of the English news channels, so I get most of my information right now from the net and from phone calls. No violence yet that I know of though, which is good. This is just conjecture, but I don't think the king is going to stand for a militant government...he's too big a supporter of democracy. If we're really really lucky, here's what will happen (prepare for intense sarcasm in the last sentence of the next paragraph):

The beloved and all-respected king of Thailand will make an appearance, comdemn the takeover, and tell the army to disband and allow PM Thaksin to remain until the next elections. In response, the Thai army will hang their heads, say "aw, ok..." and go home.

Somehow, I doubt it'll be so easy. I think that there is a distinct possibility that a new government could be instated--I don't yet know what kind of government, I just hope and pray that it's not a dictatorship of any kind after all this country's gone through to set itself up with a good democracy. Ah, I don't even know if this coup will succeed. But I will keep the LSI communtiy posted on happenings, since I'm cooped up in my house right now anyway. Hey, I must be one of the few people who can say I got off from school because the government was overthrown...

Good news, guys! I'm getting the English news channels again. TV is mostly back to normal, it's just not safe to actually go anywhere right now. As for what's actually going on with the government, I still don't know. I think the coup participants mostly just hate the PM and want him gone. Now.

What exactly is Martial Law and why do they hate him?

A government ruled by the military. It looks like it's not going to happen though, thankfully. The coup appears to have mostly just been staged in order to kick out the PM, who everyone is pissed at right now for 2 reasons:
1. He's apparently corrupt, and used government money for personal gain.
2. (Now this one I'm not positive on, but I heard it from a friend, so I'm sorry if I've got my facts wrong here) He voiced at some point in some manner or another that he has more power than the king in political matters (which is true, since its a democracy) but you have to understand that the king is veeeeeeeerrrrryyyyy highly respected and revered by the people. Not to mentioned beloved. And with good reason, for that matter (long live the king!). Needless to say, a lot of Thai people were ticked at the PM for saying that.

Yup. The military is supposed to relinquish control to democratic elections within a year. Then things should go back to normal. Until then, the only to worry about are the PM's supporters upcountry coming to Bangkok to start riots. If that happens, violence could break out, but it's looking like the military is taking steps to prevent that. And they've set up a curfew now too. Midnight, everyone is inside. Bad for bars and hookers lol, but it's supposed to keep everyone safe.

Pointing out an error-- Martial Law. Not Marshall Law. Heh heh

Oh, and just for clarification: the king supports democracy. Go figure lol. Ha, I love constitutional monarchies...And you know, I haven't posted on this thread in months. I JUST NOW thought to correct my mistake. Ha ha...wow. Yeah I was bored. Anyways....yes, we're still under Martial Law. Dunno when exactly they're gonna hold elections again. Hard to say. I'll keep the forum community updated, I guess?
