| It's not the same !
Do you know why?
Because know I'm asking if Materazzi will be punished , cuz it's know that FIFA has strict rules about racism .
However, I donnow what they're gonna do , so I'm askin somebody who knows !! | 11-07-2006 17:02 fishmunky |

| first of all they have to prove he said something racial
all the speculation in the world doesnt mean anything
and im sure you'll find if it was racist he'll be dealt with harshly, im not sure of a career ban...but it'll definitely be a ban that takes the wind out of his career's sails
from what i understand it was an exchanging of words that led to the headbutt...no one knows what has been said because neither player has said anything | 11-07-2006 18:03 grounded_angel |

| He won't be banned for that. Players have always said things to each others while on the pitch. First, they have to prove he said something racist, which will be hard, while the headbutt isn't hard to analyse at all.

| In The Daily Mail today...
An Italian interpreter was called in to analyse exactly what Materazzi said, and these were his exact words as according to the interpreter...
"We all know you're the son of a terrorist whore"
"So F*** off""
*Enter Zidane*
And as we know the rest is history...lol
I feel kinda sorry for him after reading that, personally. How about you? | 11-07-2006 19:29 NightShade | 2,772 posts
| He can only be penalised if the referee or one of the officials heard it. | 11-07-2006 20:01 supasweetgirl |

| Oh damn! I feel even more sorry for Zidane now.
One of my friends told me that Materazzi said something about Zidane being a muslim terrorist. I didn't think it was conclusive enough. But I didn't Zidane was a muslim
With Materazzi admitting that he was at fault, it sort of puts a stain over the italians' triumph. | 11-07-2006 20:30 DarXide |

| Media reports, based on interpretations by lip-readers, have suggested that Materazzi called Zidane a terrorist or insulted his mother or sister. Materazzi denies these claims, too. -Quoted from the site above
That is exactly what I was surprised. Zidane is one of those cool-minded players. If he knows he committed a violent foul, he'll leave the pitch without any hassle with the referee. But when he loses his temper, it's to the extreme. | 11-07-2006 20:31 supasweetgirl |

| Yeah ! I read in a site that Materazzi said :You son of a muslim whore ! You are all terorrists!
I swear to god if I was in Zidane's place, I would have killed the guy!
Those are the two biggest offenses for arabs and muslims!
And screw the FIFA if they did nothing about it!

| nothing will happen because there's no proof other than zidane's headbutt that materazzi actually said something racial about his parents or his backround or whatever. something may not have even been said, but by the way zidane reacted it's more probable than zinedine getting payed off by the italians to get himself thrown out for italy to win the world cup. | 11-07-2006 20:39 supasweetgirl |

| Umm ... everybody , check this out:-
BBC Radio Five Live asked for help from a deaf lip reader, Jessica Rees, who read the words phonetically to an Italian translator.
She deciphered the insult as being "you're the son of a terrorist whore" - a translation also carried by many national newspapers in Britain on Tuesday.
And :-
The BBC's Ten O'Clock News also called in experts to study the television footage of the incident and determined the following:
Materazzi's first word to Zidane was "no" before he then told him to "calm down".
He then accused him of being a "liar" and wished "an ugly death to you and your family" on the day the Frenchman's mother had been taken to hospital ill. This was followed by "Go f*** yourself".
Zidane's agent, Alain Migliaccio, has hinted that Zidane will soon reveal exactly what was said by Materazzi.
Piara Powar, national co-ordinator for the anti-racism group Kick It Out told Five Live, said: "If there was a racial slur then Fifa needs to act."
Keith Hackett, head of referees in England, said that if it can be proved that Matterazzi racially abused the Frenchman, then Fifa should take retrospective action for "the good of the game."

| rejectedproject, how can you even think the Italians bought Zidane.
Excuse me but this is not cricket where matches were fixed once by paying some of the players of the team to behave badly. This game is the most popular, most played in the world. And players literally die for their team. If Zidane wanted money he can go on earning millions by playing for Real Madrid or whatever.
Anyway.. supasweetgirl, could you give me the site where passage was taken from? | 11-07-2006 20:50 supasweetgirl |

| It would have been miles funnier if when the ref ran over with the red card out, Zidane head butted him aswell. Head-butt physco rampage!
I've revised my opinion of it now with hindsight, and if the remarks were indeed about his mother who is in hosptial having been taken ill, what with the worry of that compounding world cup pressue, I wouldn't lay any blame on what would be a very emtional wound-up Zidane. He just needs to come out and clarify that for his own sake.
Now as for what will happen Susu, technically there is nothing in the rules for this. The referee didnt pick it up and officially only what is called by the ref during the game can be acted upon. FIFA and various footballing bodies have been extremely reluctant in the past to hand out retrospective punichments in trials by video - purely because if they started doing it, where would they draw the line to undermining or over-riding the ref?
However, given FIFA's very strong and public stance on racisim, and the high profile setting it took place in, if media pressure mounts and they can stack enough evidence against Mazzarati, they'll coax a confession and a public appology out of him with the carrot of a lesser suspension, but suspend him non-the-less (it'd be all levels of the game, club and all) and probably give him a fine. | 11-07-2006 21:13 dakondakblade |

| Think it logically...
Zidane already beat one of his arch rivals.. well no not really a rival, but competitors, Portugal's - Luis Figo..
they had battled to rival each other countless times, and both said they were retiring after this world cup..
Portugal lost to France, yet were hailed as heros for getting this far.
France knew their captain was playing his last game, and he magnificently scored 4 or 5 min in to the match..
so
WHY on his last match EVER as captain of france, would he do something stupid like headbutting an opponent?
Its simple.. Either he snapped which I doubt.. Or the Italian.. forgot his name...
said something either Racial or ethnic towards Zidane.. Esp as Zidane has muslim roots as well as french, so he may have taken that insult even more personally , as muslims over the world are being insulted for something that they are not even partaking in. | 11-07-2006 21:15 Rise | 566 posts
| Oh, and as to length of any potential suspension, I'd hazzard not long. Maybe six months at most, probably less. People have suffered less for more serious offences. | 11-07-2006 21:15 supasweetgirl |

| Know what I would have done? Waited and kicked that dude's ass after the match.
Because he deserved it if he did say things like that...and as a celebrity, punishment is never as harsh. Zidane wouldn't have even been punished. Just wait until the match was over and deck that fool. | 11-07-2006 21:20 supasweetgirl |
