| All rise.
The case of American Football or Gridiron vs. Association Football or Soccer shall now be heard.
Opening statement:
It's soccer...Of course the game was boring.
Yes, I have watched soccer unfortunately. Very boring, no real strategy it seems...

| Sure.
American Football has way more strategy than "soccer."
and I will refer to it as soccer, because I am American, and that's what we call it. | 0 @ 21-06-2006 21:31 PinkFloyd | 25,917 posts
| Eh, here we go, more about this. I just want it to be over.
I don't really care for Football (American) or Soccer, but I do disagree with the remark about Soccer having no strategy to it.
There is strategy to every sport, I just never got into either of them. Oh, and I actually do agree with Soccer being boring, it is. | 0 @ 21-06-2006 21:38 slim_gary | 7,286 posts
| basically football (or soccer... i.e. proper football) wins over any other kind or "football/useyourhandsandkickeverynowandagain ball") | 0 @ 21-06-2006 21:39 Rise | 560 posts

I would argue the complete opposite.
From what I know of AF, its a play-by-play tactical system. You try one thing dependent on what you view as the weaknesses in the opposition. If it doesnt work, you sit down, look through the play book, and then try something else. The defence line-up play by play to counter what they expect will be the likely channels of attack. Its tactics on very short scales of unit vs unit.
Am I wrong?
With Soccer, because the game is alot more fluid and you cant ajust on a game by game basis, you need more detail tactics from the off. Do we play long ball to negate their midfield, or do we keep the ball down and try to dominate play. Which will work better? Do we press them or do we hit them on the counter? Also, because positions are pretty much permanent for the whole 90 minutes, its very much one-on-one individual tactics that need to be considered aswell. Does the winger run at his defender, or does he cut in early? Does the striker play deep or off the shoulder to exploit a lack of pace? Does the centre back mark his man or stay zonal (in an area). Its this fine level of detail in an ever changing game that may not be apparent to the untrained eye, but for me makes it miles more tactical then AF and its many variations of throwing the ball forward to different people. | 0 @ 21-06-2006 21:40 Jay_The_Viking | 22,182 posts
| What I wonder is why they picked football for American football, if soccer was called football first.
Or vice versa. Retards. | 0 @ 21-06-2006 21:42 Rise | 560 posts
| Each to their own opinion PinkFloyd.
But, with respect, we pulled this out of Randomness and put it where it belongs, so if you dont want a piece of this argument, leave it. | 0 @ 21-06-2006 21:46 Rise | 560 posts
| Jay, long story short, both Soccer and AF are derived from the same game called 'Football' in the 1800s . The Americans developed it their way, we developed it our own way (namely dropping use of the hands) so technically its correct to call them both football. Soccer is an abreviation of Association Football after the Football Association which first codified the rules (of soccer) which are used to today.
Make sense? | 0 @ 21-06-2006 21:46 Jay_The_Viking | 22,182 posts

| Football, all the way. (soccer)
its one of the few sports i dont find boring,
specially when you play with some friends.
its more dinamic than most sports, its simple, requires a great deal of skill, most people think its easy to control the ball while running full speed and then shoot with strenght and precision while having to get rid of the defenders...
american football is boring, and its too damn long..
i still think its a great sport, but personally i enjoy world football much more | 0 @ 22-06-2006 15:11 Barakine | 21,965 posts
| Football (soccer, as you call it) is the best. | 0 @ 22-06-2006 16:10 Rise | 560 posts
| I think the skill part is something most non-football fans greatly over look. The skill required to do the 'simplest' things like tackle, pass or shoot is hard to put across until you've properly tried it, the skill required to do it at a professional level is just immense.
And then when you understand that, watching someone like Ronaldinho or Zinidine Zidane or Thierry Henry is simply awe-inspiring. | 0 @ 22-06-2006 16:25 paynie | 5,653 posts
| Soccer needs more skill and flair but I prefer Soccer mainly because im from the UK | 0 @ 22-06-2006 17:59 FireWaterBurn | 28,885 posts
| I am sure the skill is great at the professional level...Then again, there are few things that don't take immense skill to do at the professional level...
and I don't understand your arguement for soccer having more strategy... In football, it is a play by play basis. You have 20 seconds to decide the play, routes, etc... Now, I understand that soccer is fluid and it is all on instinct...but football plays are so much more complicated. You have 3 receivers all running different routes, you have the offensive line deciding who blocks who, you have running backs and QBs all doing different things.
A professional football player has to memorize hundreds of plays... They may have more time to call up the play, but they are much more difficult.
The NFL probably has the greatest athletes in the world... I am talking about 350 pound men who can run a 40 yards dash in 4.7 seconds... 6 foot 5 wide receivers like Plex Burress with 40 inch vertical leaps... They are all like that. All insane athletes. I'm not questioning the endurance and stamina it takes to play soccer, but the athleticism required to play in the NFL is extraordinary. You have to be extremely big and extremely fast.
Soccer is the ultimate borefest to me. Kick the ball down the field, have it kicked back...Score maybe 3 goals all game. In football, someone is getting tackled, or someone is making a cgreat catch or making a great run every play...
Mike Vick. For the Atlanta Falcons. He is the greatest athlete in the history of the world. I'll find a video for you, which I'm sure you won't watch... | 0 @ 22-06-2006 18:39 JuicyJ | 381 posts
| wow for once i agree with this idiot fwb above me, even though he wastes a lot of time arguing this retarded topic with ignorant foreigners. the only time that soccer is good is on international level (world cup). otherwise is boring | 0 @ 22-06-2006 18:50 BynnaD | 2,845 posts
| Sigh.. soccer simply does not exist.
There is only American Football and Football. It's a fact our.. yeah the folks across the Atlantic like to butcher things of the English. ie. the English language.
They also like to butcher English sports. As American Football = Rugby + Football. It is really simple, netball = basketball. Baseball = cricket/rounders. | 0 @ 22-06-2006 18:58 FireWaterBurn | 28,885 posts
| Anyways, in soccer it's all just kciking a ball around the field... Hell, nobody in America cares, even about the World Cup. Football brings many more aspects to the game...
You know, more than running and kickin a ball. A lot more stretegy, size, strength, athleticism, etc... Playing quarterback in the NFL is probably one of the hardest things to do succsefully at the professional level. | 0 @ 22-06-2006 19:04 BynnaD | 2,845 posts
| Same can be said for any sport.. that doesnt take a genieus.
Yeah, you wear the roughest stuff you buy and throw a ball past a line, or some crap. You certainly need A+ grades for that | 0 @ 22-06-2006 19:07 FireWaterBurn | 28,885 posts
| Yeah, you wear the roughest stuff you buy and throw a ball past a line, or some crap. You certainly need A+ grades for that
Yeah...Not making too much sense there Dannyboy.
Let me clear it up: Being an NFL quarterback is the toughest job in the professional sports world. | 0 @ 22-06-2006 19:08 groovygirl_no1 | 818 posts
| arg.... i suppose american football is probably better, although its still just rugby for the pathetic... i mean its basically rugby with pads | 0 @ 22-06-2006 19:11 BynnaD | 2,845 posts
| Groovygirl, American Football is the combination of 2 great British sports, into 1 *insert adjective* American sport.
No-one in England cares about the Mega Bowl or whatever it is. | 0 @ 22-06-2006 19:13 groovygirl_no1 | 818 posts
| lol, i only said american football over 'soccar' cause i think football (english version) is just full of drama queens. True we dont care abotu the mega-bowl. | 0 @ 22-06-2006 19:14 FireWaterBurn | 28,885 posts
| Haha...Mega Bowl. That's great.
...but we don't want you to care. You shouldn't, it's an American sport... We don't give a shit about foreign sports, so we don't expect you to care either... The NFL has some of the best athletes on Earth...The others would be in the NBA... I don't see what people see in soccer...
| 0 @ 22-06-2006 19:17 BynnaD | 2,845 posts
| It's a fact, more people know David Beckham, worldwide. Than some quarterback, the best one or something.
Football is recognised worldwide too, AF certainly isnt.
I do however agree many NBA players are good at what they do. | 0 @ 22-06-2006 19:21 FireWaterBurn | 28,885 posts
| Haha....and I don't give a shit... Whoop dee doo... David Beckham... I don't give a shit about other countries...I care about mine. You see, we know here in America that NFL players are the world's most impressive athletes, possibly second to NBA athletes, who are also in America...
It's fact. Any intelligent sports fan can see this. | 0 @ 22-06-2006 19:23 BynnaD | 2,845 posts
| Only the American ones darling, who prefer butched great British ones. |
