| OK, there are occasional changes, but if you like fantasy, you'll recognise this generic plotline:
evil servants of king/emperor/wizard kill family and/or destroy house of protagonist. Pratogonist sets out on angry vengeance mission. Along the way, protagonist meets many weird and wonderful characters. Usually picks up two friends, generally including some sort of:
*thief, and comic relief
*old or middle-age man who trains our young hero/ine
*beautiful princess
*handsome young guy
Protagonist learns life lessons. Is country bumpkin, and sees capital of country, is very impressed. Meets many people oppressed by evil king/emperor/wizard as well as the servants, and vows to do something about it. Wins through against odds, but has to make some sacrifice to do it.
Seriously. Check your favourites. |

| i dont really care if it's all the same generic stuff when it coems to fantasy books... as long as it entices me and makes me read, and i love my fantasy books. | 0 @ 10-03-2006 12:34 Dagor | 36,595 posts
| very true .. you wonder why it's called 'fantasy' and not 'lack of fantasy' | 0 @ 10-03-2006 17:36 davette | 174 posts
| Lol okay my favourite fantasy series doesn;t follow that plotline at all but meh. I haven't actually read that much fantasy so I can't make any kind of intelligent response :p

| that's why they are fantasy..either way..they take you out of the real world. | 0 @ 10-03-2006 20:02 dark_knight86 | 4,992 posts
| I like fantasy books, they have good stories with lots of imagination which you wouldn't get from a non fiction book. They're just so enjoyable to read because they take you out of the real world for a moment. | 0 @ 11-03-2006 14:26 PunkRckr8 | 10,883 posts
| This post is a complete rip-off of an internet site . . . | 0 @ 11-03-2006 14:32 Dagor | 36,595 posts

| . . .and I find it sad how many people try to pass of these 'amazing' facts and such from the internet as their own | 0 @ 12-03-2006 04:43 Penitration | 359 posts
| I didn't read half of that but I am going to try to disagree anyway, not all fantasy books are the same. I don't know what category the Discworld books come under but I'd think it'd be somewhere close to fantasy..maybe a distant cousin..anyway...my point is...thats not the same. And its really annoying when people try to say stuffs all the same, cause like...who cares, as long as people are enjoying it? | 0 @ 12-03-2006 05:33 that_wasnt_me | 1,441 posts
| i totally agree, and i am up way past my (kiddie word here) but hells yeah. I hate Harry Pothead, the only fantasy/adventure thingys i like it LOTR, i have my reasons (mostly sexual) | 0 @ 12-03-2006 05:39 Pippin247 | 2,675 posts
| * offtopic : ^heh, lotr, mostly sexual, i have to agree on some level tho..
i like fantasy, but it pisses me off everytime i read a story with a wizard i always mistake for gandalf, then theres always orcs and dragons and beautiful elves...and eh..i still read them, but i get pissed off seeing how its the same as my beloved lotr..

| that is NOT true!!!!!! I just sed it coz i was annoyed @ christopher paolini! And it's not "amazing facts" it's just my opinion! Not criticising fantasy in general, just rip-off writers (die cornelia funke, die)
Dianna Wynne Jones, Jonathan Stroud: always original

| Um, sorry, that wasn't very clear. Im mad that I got accused of ripping off a site. I read a lot of fantasy, so don't dismiss exhaustive research and an expert opinion *cough* as a rip-off. | 0 @ 14-03-2006 22:19 DeadTeddyBear | 4,093 posts

| Hmz, The Sword of Truth Series by Terry Goodkind... doesn't have orcs, or fairies.. there are wizards but of a different sort.
I love that series because it's got alot philosophy about life in general ... and alot of real-life situations that makes it more ... hmz relatable besides just being a fantasy book.

| All fantasy books are not about the same thing, but a lot of them are quite alike. But try to read something by Terry Pratchett or Neil Gaiman, their books are not like anything else! | 0 @ 28-03-2006 02:09 Zubaida | 154 posts
| I dont really like reading fantasy except for HP. I've read all the books and its okay in my oppinion but i guess it's not really that kind of fantasy.. i havent read anything else but that of the genre but i like lotr movies. Maybe i should read more.. any suggestions as to what is good and not toooo heavy ?? | 0 @ 03-05-2006 09:49 lokifan | 94 posts
| David Eddings' "The Elenium" trilogy is great -- exciting and funny with good characterisation. That said, it's very long. Tom Holt if you want hilarity and surrealism. If you're starting from HP, though...maybe Diana Wynne Jones? Try "Charmed Life".
And if you are willing to give up your dignity and explore fanfic, The Shoebox Project is almost the only thing worth reading. It is beautiful, hilarious, canon-related. It is also Marauders era and I'll warn you, Sirius and Remus get together. |
