| i notice that i've done this for a while now
and i pick at it so much it starts to bleed sometimes which makes me stop but i start again because i just can't stop biting it. its almost similiar to biting ur nails
but its the thumbs that your biting the side sking off and they just become rili red on the side because your peeling the skin.
anyhow i have read this is actually some self hurting thing where you don't really realize you're doing it and these people all of a sudden start isolating themselves and rarely talk to friends and neighbours bout the problem. but its nothing big ofcourse. they dont completely isolate themselves |

| "Intriguingly, a high percentage of pickers I’ve work with were picked on by others when they were growing up. They may have been scapegoated at school or the victim of critical, perfectionistic parents. Being picked on then becomes a pattern that people loyally continue by internalizing the problem and picking on themselves. "
"Many people describe looking for self-soothing, and go into a trancelike daze when they pick. Some people do most of their picking when they are bored, reading, or watching a movie, and little is going on. For others as the stress ratchets up, so does their picking. For yet another group, what starts as a well-intentioned attempt to smooth out or improve an area of skin may quickly turn destructive when it combines with a relentless perfectionism. | I don't think picking at hangnail will make you turn to self mutilation. I know tons of people that do that & never once even thought about turning to self mutilation. Or began to isolate themself or anything like that. | 08-03-2006 04:16 babii_gurrl | 862 posts
| i never thought it was a big deal either.
and you don't know that our self mutulating yourself. it's happening without you realizing. it's not an huge issue but at a point the person might have started to feel like he wanted to be alone for a while and just have some people close. | 08-03-2006 04:21 babii_gurrl | 862 posts
| * offtopic : don't know that *you're* self mutulating

| I know what self mutilation is, thanks. I'm just saying that how many people do you know have never picked at a scab? Ever? Yeah, I really don't think it's going to turn into a big deal. Maybe a few. But whatever. | 08-03-2006 04:24 babii_gurrl | 862 posts
| i know what self mutulating is too
i'm not talking about a normal pick at a scab
im talking about literally going at that spot that it's layer is peeled off that it starts bleeding and almost goes around the whole finger
im talking about that.

| yes, you should wear band aids to help stop it
i heard there's a certain medicine for it
so whenever u touch it with your mouth because you wanna peel it it will taste disgusting | 08-03-2006 07:26 Penitration | 359 posts
| nail polish remover tastes pretty bad... | 08-03-2006 07:34 the_BurnInAtOR | 3,204 posts
| I think everyone does that, ever...
its like picking scabs or blisters or something... it hurts and no goddamned good comes from it, but for some retarted reason its near irresistable. | 08-03-2006 12:20 DeadTeddyBear | 4,093 posts
| i guess it's like a subconcious thing, you have to learn to control your subconcious. | 09-03-2006 00:21 babii_gurrl | 862 posts

| I do that too - not so much that it bleeds, but enough for it to hurt. It's just so addicting.
It's just a habit, like biting your nails. Not a big deal.
Maybe someone should invent patches to stop nail/skin biting like there are patches to quit smoking. Haha.
But seriously, if you're worried about and want to stop first figure out when you do it. Like I do it when I'm really bored or just standing around talking or whatever. If I'm concentrating on something or doing something I don't do it (even if it's just watching tv). So if I wanted to stop I'd need to keep myself busy. Do you get what I mean? | 10-03-2006 05:08 babii_gurrl | 862 posts
| yea i understand that. it says in the article that people tend to do it when they are bored and they daze off. but i cant keep myself busy ALL the time |
