'goth' doesn't really exist save as a word that has been misconstrued by the need of so called 'normal' people to label those that they don't understand.

Tabitha, I hate to potentially start another little tiff, but I must reiterate: the statement about "goth" not existing is false. If we don't go by the douchebag definition and look back into history, we'll see "Goth" having a very prevalent role. Just look at the fall of Rome, and the incursions leading up to it. There's a reason we had VisiGOTHS.

So, people, if you're really so hardcore Gothic, let's see you put on your decorative armor(imported right from Venice), mount your armoured steed, grab yourself a mace, a form up. Of course, that's assuming we go with early-Germany/late-Holy Roman Empire Gothic Knights. 'Cause that's when it was cool.

^Exactly

Goth comes back from forever ago.
Anyways, goths are proud of themselves, while emos feel sorry for themselves. i remember talking to an emo in a chatroom, and the guy is like, oh, my daddy raped me, he abused me...

i mean no disrespect but since when does feeling sorry for yourself get you anywhere?

[offtopic]EMO is short for ''emotional''

Ok... everyone, get this through your head:
GOTH IS MORE THAN A LABEL! IT DOES NOT INVOLVE CONFORMING TO A LAME STEREOTYPE!

Yeah, we all know about the goths are technically a group that existed a long time ago, but in modern times, it's a subculture. I probably said this already, but heavy/death metal is not considered goth music. Satanism and depression have nothing to do with goth.

blah blah blah shove your history up someone else's arse..

This is a discussion from a bunch of kids wanting to know why people call those dressed in black 'goth'..

the term they are refering to labeling as it is DOES NOT EXIST.

Sure it's apart of history.. but that history is not now.. quit trying to bring things into it that aren't apart of this discussion.. take your history lessons to a history discussion.. not a thread full of kids and their labels

Agreed with step on this one.

Go to Germany, home of the goths..that's where the true goths are.

Americanised goths are a joke really comapred to them who for them (Germany's goths), goth is a lifestyle, not a label, not a stereotype, not just wearing black.

Wow, Tabitha. Work on controlling that bitterness. Some of us like to take the piss out of things.

Not bitter, I just hate it when people come in here blowing their own whistle spouting about only semi-related theories.. it's just like you want to get a word in about something you know .. instead of about what we are truly talking about

Tabitha, it was entirely on-topic. If you want to go mocking people for the use of a word, there needs to be a concensus on the origins of that word. You can't expect these stupid kids to just know these things. Education is a good thing.

If you are dicussing the term gothic, why is it bad to refer to it's history? To fully understand a word, a lot of times you have to look at it's meaning and origin. Perhaps goth now means people who are depressed and wear black clothing, etc, because of the impact that the invading Goths had on the Romans in the dark ages. Or perhaps because of the culture of the Goths. I'm not an expert or anything, but sometimes the history of a word is more vital to understanding it that it's modern slang deffinition.

I like Nightwish, but it's not goth music.

There's a pretty big difference between emo and goth, but both terms are corrupted by labels and people trying to act cool. Some idiots actually think that emo is a combination between goth and punk... WTF?

or enjoy 'gothic architecture' I mean what the hell?

Seriously, there's this old gothic church downtown and they just go crazy about it. But that doesn't mean every single one of them would like it as everyone is different

The only true new thing I've learned from this thread, is that many ppl on this forum is very naive, sayin' all that "aah, only goths cut themselves and wear black, we're the cool ones who know exactly everything, even though we've lived like this for all our lives" sheitt.. Unless you know the correct answer, you people should just shut up and not complain about them.. There is no such thing as "normality" in lifestyles, but if there was, they would be as freakin' normal as you people..

Gothic is a term that people used to define the people that dress in all black and wear really crazy things. I'm one myself so what people use to define me is thier own opinion. We're not freaks, emos, or whatever else you'd like to call us.
