| What is the meaning of your national flag? The colors - and which order!
Germany:
Black
Red
Gold
The colors stand for freedom and democracy! The colors are taken from the uniforms of the army who fought against Napoleon between 1815 and 1817!
Black uniform, red stripes, golden buttons!
I'd like to know some other flags |

| The german flag is heraldically false. It is about the only flag in the world in which the colours are not separated by a metal ...
Heraldic colours: blue, red, green, black, (purple)
Heraldic metals: gold, silver | 0 @ 15-12-2005 13:51 grounded_angel | 5,952 posts

| the union jack is a combo of the flagged crosses of the various saints of uk.
-the red '+' on the white background is that of St George who is englands patron saint. he supposedly killed dragons.
-the white 'x' on the blue background is St Andrew. dunno what he did.
-and the red 'x' on a white background is St Patrick who did something (again, i dunno what) which gave Ireland an excuse to drink. not that they need an excuse but yeh... | 0 @ 15-12-2005 14:48 Dagor | 34,018 posts

| i have no idea
*researches*
the 'union' bit comes from it symbolising the union of the countries to one another.
and the 'jack' bit:
-It may come from the 'jack-et' of the English or Scottish soldiers
-or from the name of James I who originated the first union, in either its Latin or French form Jacobus or Jacques
-or, as 'jack' once meant small, the name may be derived from a royal proclamation issued by Charles II that the Union Flag should be flown only by ships of the Royal Navy as a jack, a small flag at the bowsprit.
i reckon the 3rd one is right | 0 @ 15-12-2005 14:58 Dagor | 34,018 posts
| For instance (just discovered an interesting fact):
When the red cross of England was put onto the flag of Scotland, a white border was added around the red cross for reasons of heraldry. The rules of heraldry demanded that the two colours must never be placed on top of each other, or even touch each other
Correct flags are:
the french one: red and blue separated by silver
the italian one: red and green separated by silver
the spanish one: red and red separated by gold
the belgian one: black and red separated by gold

| The dutch flag originated during the rebellion in the late 16th century. It is the flag of the 'Geuzen'. I think it is based on the one of Willem van Oranje. | 0 @ 15-12-2005 17:15 LinkinLawg | 19,068 posts

| México:
green white red
with an eagle eating a snake on a cactus in the middle of the flag....the white part.
I'm not 100% sure, but I think that during the independence a guy named Agustín de Iturbide proposed a deal to Vicente Guerrero and it was called "Plan de Iguala"(plan of....Igualaa place here) or "De las 3 Garantías"(of the 3 warranties). And it was because these 2 guys wanted different kinds of government for Mexico (or sth like that...heh). So they made the flag with those colours which represented the main things they asked for (i dont know the word for that)
green->freedom or independence(because we wanted Spain out of here)
white->religion(they all wanted to be catholics)
red->union(everyone wanted to live...well, united.and without slaves).
^^that's for the colours. Now, the eagle eating a snake on top of a cactus is supposed to be a legend of the aztecs i believe. it was said thet whenever they found that eagle eating the snake on the cactus they should establish a great city on that place. and it seems they found the place and founded Tenochtitlan.
ah well...sorry if it's confusing.
and feel free to correct if anything is wrong

| 'The Indian flag is a horizontal tricolor in equal proportion of deep saffron on the top, white in the middle and dark green at the bottom. The ratio of the width to the length of the flag is two is to three. In the centre of the white band, there is a wheel in navy blue to indicate the Dharma Chakra, the wheel of law in the Sarnath Lion Capital. This center symbol or the 'CHAKRA' is a symbol dating back to 2nd century BC. Its diameter approximates the width of the white band and it has 24 spokes, which intends to show that there is life in movement and death in stagnation. The saffron stands for courage and sacrifice; the white, for purity and truth; the green for growth and auspiciousness.
